COMMUNICATION FROM THE ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY EDUCATION IN CHESTER COUNTY

From: Pastors, in coordination with the Principals and the School Advisory Board Presidents

Subject: Sustaining Catholic Elementary Education in Southern Chester County for Today and the Future

Dear Parishioners:

In recent years, you may have witnessed the various challenges facing Catholic Education throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Southern Chester County has been no exception. For this reason, the Exec-utive Board of Elementary Education, spearheaded by Bishop Fitzgerald and leaders in the Catholic business and academic communities, formed an Advisory Council for Catholic Elementary Education for each county in the Archdiocese. The Advisory Council for Catholic Elementary Education in Chester County has been in place for over six years and has been working with our local schools to identify challenges and ensure sus-tainability, while executing strategies that promote ongoing growth and collaboration within our schools.

We are excited to share information with you about a local strategic initiative to engage with a profes-sional educational consulting firm, Bloom Planning (www.bloomplanning.com), to assist in the development of a vision and roadmap for how to stabilize, improve, expand and fund our current Catholic school presence in the Southern Chester County area. This initiative will focus on near-term sustainability and, more importantly, a longer-term vision for the growth and evolution of Catholic Education in Southern Chester County, including recommendations for achieving this vision. Bloom has designed and will administer a multi-school research plan for Assumption BVM and Sacred Heart schools, including the surrounding parishes, which includes the gathering of data, review and analysis of enrollment, baptism, development, financial and operational data to inform future strategic planning efforts. In this process Bloom will also conduct a feasibility and market study, facilitate decision making around a future model and make recommendations.

This is a cross-parish, cross-school initiative, which involves key stakeholders throughout the Southern Chester County region including pastors, principals, members of each school’s advisory board, surrounding parishes, local business people, as well as parents of children in Southern Chester County schools. Together this group makes up the Southern Chester County Steering Committee (SCCSC), supported by the Advisory Council for Catholic Elementary Education in Chester County and funded by the Foundation for Catholic Edu-cation. [Please refer to our parish webpage for the list of committee members.]

To provide clarity for this initiative, Phase I has just started and is expected to last through the begin-ning of October. Phase I consists of research, data collection, school enrollment, baptism, facilities, demo-graphic and financial analysis. During Phase I, Bloom, in concert with the SCCSC, will construct and admin-ister surveys to key stakeholders, parents of students, prospective parents of students and parishioners of Sacred Heart and ABVM. This survey will also extend to those in the broader Southern Chester County area, including St. Patrick’s, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother and St. Rocco’s. We welcome and appreciate your participation in these surveys as they will be important factors of our research phase. There is work to be done to ensure the future of Catholic Education in Southern Chester County and, with your engagement, we are ready to take it on. A key to success will be insight from parents, parishioners and staff members. Broad opportunity for input will begin this month with surveys of school parents, staff and parish-wide community members. Subsequently Phase II and Phase III will consist of further workshops for the committee as they look to create a long-term vision and plan for the future of Catholic Education in Southern Chester County.

The Southern Chester County Steering Committee is committed to keeping everyone informed of our progress through the school websites, as we continue this collective effort of establishing a clear, locally driv-en, forward looking vision for Catholic Education here in the Southern Chester County area. To that end, we will post an FAQ list and timely updates on the school website to keep families informed about our process and progress. We are deeply committed and have a sincere sense of urgency about the needs for our chil-dren and that the presence of Catholic Education remains strong in the Southern Chester County area. Again, we thank you in advance for your participation and if you have any specific questions feel free to contact your school Principal, Pastor, or anyone on the committee.

Thank you, sincerely, Father Brockson Steve Brunner Father Hennelly Leo Parsons Danielle White ABVM Pastor Sacred Heart Principal Sacred Heart Advisory Council ABVM Principal Committee Co-Chair Committee Co-Chair

Live the Liturgy

Relationships are difficult, requiring honesty, dialogue, respect, and tolerance. We can easily offend one another, even by doing the simplest of things. Feelings can be hurt and relationships can become hurtful. Sometimes, our own wounds end up wounding others. When division or discord results, rather than responding with anger, judgment, and vindication, Jesus instructs us to be compassionate, tolerant, respectful, and forgiving. We can do this even when we have to confront someone with the truth, which may not always be well received. Even with our brokenness, we are all an image of God and should do all in our power to properly resolve conflicts.

Questions of the Week

Matthew 18:15-20: Jesus commands fellow believers to be direct and honest with each other when one sins against another. Why is this so challenging? Ezekiel 33:7-9: Why do you think the Lord put such a heavy burden on the prophet Ezekiel? Romans 13:8-10: How do you imagine the Jewish Christians in Rome reacted to Paul’s assertion that “love is the fulfillment of the law”?

SPEND TIME WITH JESUS

Eucharistic Adoration M-F, After Morning Mass till 7 pm

ABVM Adoration Chapel

Are you tired of all the struggles in your daily life? Consider visiting Jesus in Adoration and tell Him all

about them. He has the answers to your prayers!

For questions, contact Mary at 302-388-3752; [email protected], Mary Ellen at 610-345-0024 or Cyndi at [email protected].

NIGHT OF INQUIRY FOR ADULT CANDIDATES WHO WOULD LIKE TO BE BAPTIZED, RECEIVE

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION, AND/OR BE CONFIRMED

Please join Father Scott on Wednesday, September 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the

Parish Life Center, located on the first floor of the church building if you are

interested in becoming Catholic or were baptized Catholic as a child but have

not received Confirmation and/or First Holy Communion. Father will explain

the process of preparing for these Sacraments, which are normally received in

the Easter Season. No registration is necessary - come as you are, and bring

a friend or potential sponsor. All your questions answered! (Well, maybe not

all, but probably some). We look forward to meeting you!

We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past three months has increased. The col-lection income through August is almost $5,000 below our budget-ed amount. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is almost 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operating costs need to be ad-dressed. For example, our elec-tric bill for August was $2,566. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

The 2017 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. To date we have raised more than $120,000. This money provided for the repair of the church roof and the removal and preservation of the stained glass windows of the old church on Evergreen Street. Because the maintenance of the church roof was less than anticipated, we were able to allocate some Ap-peal funds to the less than antic-ipated Offertory income for 2016 – 2017. We added a full time parish music director. We have significantly upgraded the music program in our parish liturgies and school. You may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make either an on-going or one-time donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

This feast celebrates a double anniversary. In Jerusalem, Constan-tine erected a round church, the Anastasis, above the empty grave of Jesus, and a basilica, the Martyrium. In the square between the two churches, a shrine, Calvarium, marking the place of the crucifixion. Dedicated in 335, they were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The two churches were rebuilt by Patriarch Modestus of Jerusalem in 626, but were later destroyed by the Muslims in 1009. The present church of the Holy Sepulcher, rebuilt by the Crusaders, was dedicat-ed in 1149. Today also commemorates the discovery of the Lord’s cross by the empress, Saint Helena, in 320.
