What do you want to do in life? What do you want to do when you graduate

(college) your answer is… It is important to find a career that makes use

of your gifts and makes you happy but…But there is such a thing called…

Vocation: it is the committed state of life that God calls us to.

Are you called to be married, single, a priest or deacon?

These are all ways in which we serve God and one another.

VocationThe Church recognizes Two of these vocationsThe married life And Priesthood. These Sacraments are known as the

Sacraments at the service of CommunionYou can be called to one or the other, but not

both

Holy OrdersCalled this because it is a way of consecrating

(designating and making holy) people for the three orders of ministry in the Church:

Bishops, priest, deaconsThose who have received the sacrament are

called ordained ministers or clergy. All baptized people share in the priesthood of

Christ by virtue of their Baptism

The Rite of OrdinationThere are three different Ordination Rites

corresponding to the three ordained ministries. The essential symbol for all three rites is the

bishop’s laying on of hands and prayer that the person reeives the graces of the Holy Spirit.

Like Baptism and Confirmation, the Sacrament of Holy Orders imprints a permanent character upon a person’s soul.

Thus ordination can never be repeated.

OrdinationOnly men are ordained because Jesus chose

men, to be his Apostles, and the Apostles did the same. For this reason, the Church is bound to uphold the same consistency.

The Roman Church also has a discipline of priestly celibacy. This means that the priest and bishops promise to never marry so they can focus their attention on their ministry- The Church

Marriage in the Bible From the beginning the Bible teaches that

marriage (Matrimony) is part of God’s planGen 2:18… It is not good that the man should

be aloneGod created men and women so that the two

would complement each other and form a union in which love should be shared.

The Meaning of Married Love:A sacramental marriage has several meanings. ONE: a marriage is intended to bring unity

between spousesTWO: they will have no other person come

between them. They are committed until “death do us part”

FINALLY: it is intended to be open to new life

Marriage:To be married a couple must both wish to be

married and have no obstacles to prevent them from giving their free and full consent.

Pregnancy, mental illness, or a secret addiction could all be obstacles that prevent free and full consent.

The Church requires that weddings take place in the Church in the presence of a priest or deacon and before witnesses.

Marriage: The married couple represents Gods love, for

this reason, Matrimony is ideally celebrated as part of a mass, although it isn’t required.

In a Catholic wedding, the spouses are the ministers.

The essential sacramental sigh is the exchange of vows

The priest or deacon witnesses the marriage

Marriage:Other elements of the Rite include the Liturgy

of the Word, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing

The Sacrament of Matrimony is the foundation for the Christian family

Divorce VS. Annulment Divorcing your lawful spouse and marrying

another person is a sin against the indissolubility (permanence) of marriage.

An annulment is not the same thing as a divorce.

An annulment is a special decree granted by the Church, after closely examining the circumstances, declaring that a particular union was not a sacramental marriage

Page 13: Sacraments at the Service of Communion

Annulment:The judges determine that an impediment, or

obstacle, was present at the time of the marriage.

A person who has received an annulment is free to receive Holy Communion and to marry again in the Church.
