TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. This would require a 2 to 3 hour commitment one to two times a month on a Friday afternoon or on Saturday, assisting the Wedding Coordinator on the day of the scheduled wedding. OBSTACLES
The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

If you have a group that would be interested in having a tour of the inside of
the Basilica, Hospitality Minister, Larry Larson can take your group on a 30-40 minute walk around the inside of the
Church and provide information on the history of the Basilica. To set up a tour, or

“El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí; me ha enviado para anunciar el evangelio a los pobres”
MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: A nada que nos paremos a pensar, descubrimos cómo en nuestro interior tendemos a valorar aquello que percibimos como fuerte, poderoso, seguro y, en ello, depositamos nuestra confianza. Una vez más, la dinámica del Reino va por otro camino. ¡Qué casualidad!
Las tres lecturas de hoy nos presentan otra manera se situarse en la vida: desde el lugar de los débiles, de los pequeños, de lo insignificante, porque resulta que es ahí donde mejor nos podemos encontrar con el Dios de la vida. Si algo dificultó la fe en Jesús fue precisamente su procedencia humana, para unos seres que seguían buscando a Dios en lo fuerte y en lo extraordinario: “¿No es éste el hijo del carpintero...?”.
Aceptar esto nos cuesta. Pero... ¿no residen ahí precisamente todas nuestras posibilidades? Porque nosotros y nosotras también sabemos de nuestra debilidad y pequeñez personal. La mayoría de nosotros y nosotras somos gente sencilla, con grandezas y limitaciones. Y es ahí precisamente donde quiere estar el Dios de Jesucristo, no entre los/as grandes de este mundo, no en el poder y la fuerza, sino presente en nuestra debilidad, para llenarla de vida. Ésta es la Buena Noticia, rubricada por Él con una entrega total. La vida del Carpintero culminó en Resurrección.
Creer en la fuerza de lo débil, es entrar en la dinámica del Reino, es acogerlo como camino para encontrar la felicidad del ser humano.
¡DICHOSOS y DICHOSAS los/as que no se escandalizan de este Dios!
