TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a cer-tain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.

To Mary we entrust the mothers, the fathers, the children who today are holy families migrating in hope, in fear, in longing, for peace, for some security, for something like a home. may they find their journey's end as we open ourselves to their stories, their need, their spirits; we ask for mercy for all migrants and for our communities who are challenged to welcome them, to give them hope for a new life. --by Jane Deren

Commonwealth Ave.). Fr. Justin Gable, O.P., prior in San Francisco and philosophy professor in Berkeley, will lead the retreat on practical lay spirituality in the Dominican tradition. The retreat will begin at 12 noon with lunch and close with Holy Mass at 5:30 P.M. in the parish church. “Un gran profeta ha surgido entre nosotros. Dios ha visitado a su pueblo”
MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA:
Nos encontramos para RENOVAR NUESTRA FE en el Señor Jesús y nuestro compromiso de seguir realizando su proyecto, que no es otro que el proyecto del Padre: un mundo NUEVO, más fraterno, más justo. Éste es el test de nuestra realidad creyente. Hemos venido a alimentarnos de su Palabra y del Pan de la Vida. Es la propuesta. El evangelio de hoy volverá a presentarnos uno de los SIGNOS (palabra muy importante en el evangelio de Juan): es la multiplicación de los panes y de los peces. Jesús nos deja este signo de compartir, como un pre-anuncio de lo que poco más tarde nos ofrecerá: ÉL MISMO como el PAN DE VIDA, con capacidad de saciar el hambre de cuantos y cuantas se le acercan y le acogen en sus vidas. Y es que Dios no es indiferente al sufrimiento y a la soledad de los hombres y de las mujeres; así lo demuestra en su Hijo Jesús que se compadeció de aquella multitud hambrienta. Quien se compadece, como Jesús, multiplica los cinco panes. Celebrar la EUCARISTÍA (= la fracción del Pan) es asumirle a Él como aquel que llena nuestras vidas; es saber compartir como Él mismo hace; es trabajar por construir la fraternidad que en Ella se significa. Así, un día más, se nos hace una invitación a CRECER en nuestra fe, viviendo al estilo de Jesús, y empeñándonos, como Él, en saciar el hambre de los hermanos y de las hermanas. Cada uno, cada una, según sus posibilidades, hace posible el milagro.
¡Dichoso y dichosa quien, como Jesús, se hace PAN de VIDA: porque disfrutará del PROYECTO DEL REINO!

NUESTRA COMUNIDAD INMIGRANTE
Las Hermanas de St. Joseph y el Ministerio de Inmigración les invita a que se unan a nosotros en oración y ayuno en apoyo a los padres e hijos que inhumanamente han sido separados en nuestras fronteras.
Únete a nosotros todos los jueves por la tarde de este verano a partir del 19 de julio de 6 p.m. a 7 p.m. en el área verde de la puerta lateral de la Basilica sobre la calle Camino Capistrano.
Traiga a su familia, a sus vecinos y a sus amigos.
