Sacred Heart Parish— Inclement Weather Policy If school is canceled due to bad weather, daily morning Mass
and all events in the Parish Center are cancelled.
Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the week... We never marginalize or turn our backs on those who suffer
violence, oppression from unjust systems, poverty, illness, or
disease. Jesus never turned anyone away, but always extended
a hand of healing and compassion. He would insist on extend-
ing God's merciful and unconditional love to all, even if it
meant breaking the Sabbath or civil law. Does the way we
treat others, especially those who are different than us, reflect
the freedom, joy, love, and good news of the Gospel?
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
If you witnessed a miracle, wouldn't you want to tell every-
one? If you saw the sun dance in the sky, a crippled man
walk, or the Virgin Mary appear in front of you, wouldn't
you just want to shout about it from a rooftop so all could
hear? Maybe you would be afraid others would not believe
you. You might choose instead to keep it to yourself to
avoid criticism and ridicule. At least, if you saw a miracle,
you would have a choice: to tell or not to tell.
Yet, at every Mass we witness a miracle. We witness bread
and wine as it becomes the true presence of Jesus Christ. It
isn't a saint or Mary appearing before us; it is actually Je-
sus! When was the last time you told anybody about that
miracle?
It might not be easy for us to always talk about our faith,
but we can show them. When we receive the Eucharist into
our bodies, we become one with Christ. We go forth from
the Mass as a living testimony of the miracle that occurred
at Mass. People will not be able to simply look at us and
see the evidence. We need to demonstrate to them the real-
ity of this miracle by our good deeds and profound acts of
charity. That is stewardship. That is bearing witness to the
truth of our God being truly present to us. It is something
we should want to share with everyone.

LENT: Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season
of Lent . For those who desire, on that day foreheads will
be marked with a cross of ashes as a sign of Penance. The
Church asks us to pay attention to three specific areas in our
Life with God:
UPWARD: Can I make it a point as I pray to quiet my
heart and try to sense God’s love?
INWARD: Will I try to forgive people today, or will I let
resentment get the upper hands?
OUTWARD: Can I become just a bit more loving toward
other people today?
This is the good news of Lent: God sees you! God knows
you! God is committed to you! God loves you!
―Thank you, Father, that you see me with love. Help me
gaze at you this Lent.‖

ioners connect the celebration of the Eucharist more closely
with the mission of Jesus Christ and the Church, and inspire
them to live more intentionally as missionary disciples of
Jesus during the week.

February 11…. WHY DO WE DO THAT? -
CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED
Question: Carnivale and Mardi Gras celebrations are
linked to Ash Wednesday, Lent, fast and abstinence. Can
you tell us more about the connections between these
events?
Answer: Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty
days known as Lent. Every year, Christians highlight this
penitential season as a time of self-examination, reforma-
tion of one's life, and continued development of a deeper
spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fast-
ing, and almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity
and ritual. Each of these spiritual practices is aimed at
personal discipline as well as continued concern for the
other, especially the poor or alienated.
Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during
which personal transformation occurs and out of which
people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's
mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter
how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spiritual-
ity. Fasting was initially stricter, permitting only one sim-
ple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies.
Such things were not even allowed in the house.
In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration,
people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed
during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally
referred to as Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to
meat," or Mardi Gras, literally meaning "Fat Tuesday."
The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just be-
fore Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on modera-
tion in all things, as well as a strong concern the poor.
What are you doing for the poor this Lent?

The backpack Program for children in need at our Lake George

backpacks with food on a weekly basis, they have even been able
to send extra food home for these children when there is a week-
long school break.
No child should go hungry. Without your continuous sup-
port, none of this would be possible. Even so, it is not
my Father’s will that even one of these little ones
should perish. (Matthew 18:14)
