In the coming week we celebrate the Easter Tridium – Holy Thursday when Christians celebrate Jesus giving us the gift of himself in the Eucharist – Good Friday when Jesus dies on the cross and Easter when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus and the hope that brings. ‘So we are called not only to believe that Christ once rose from the dead, thereby proving that he was God; we are called to experience the Resurrection in our own lives by entering into this dynamic movement, by following Christ who lives in us. This life is expressed by the power of love and of encounter; Christ lives in us if we love one another. And our love for another means involvement in one another’s history.’ Thomas Merton Sacred Heart Catholic School Phone: 69226900 Fax: 69224849 Email:shk‐[email protected] Website:web.shkww.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER 06/19 ‐ 10th April 2019 SCHOOL PHOTOS Students to wear their full summer uniform on Thursday for photos please. It means that each grade will have a Teacher Assistant shared between the two classes. What a full and varied end to the term we have had with the beginning of the Mindfulness Curriculum, InformaƟon morning for Kinder 2020, AthleƟcs Carnival and Cross Country and school photos just to menƟon a few. Teachers are pleased with the achievements of your children this term. They have noted the seƩled nature of their classes noƟng and recognising individual achievement and growth. Our students are to be commended for the manner in which they have entered into the many and varied learning experiences this term. And because we aren’t perfect yet there have been Ɵmes when some students have needed support to focus or help to sort out issues on the playground or social issues. We appreciate the Ɵmes parents have advised us directly of concerns that have arisen so teachers or myself can address the concern. Of parƟcular focus in our school is quality social interacƟons encouraging children to always treat one another with respect in word and acƟon. Wasn’t our AthleƟcs Carnival a great event. We very much appreciated the presence of so many parents and grandparents who cheered our students on and who assisted us with the running of the field events. And then you helped again with our Cross Country yesterday. I thank you so much, we certainly are a fortunate school community. Monday 29th of April, first day of term two, is a pupil free day. The staff will be working on developing their knowledge of the English Syllabus as this is part of our annual plan for improvement. Students return on Tuesday 30th April. The past few weeks have been difficult for our school community. Let us not be defined by this experience but learn from this Ɵme and conƟnue to help our wonderful strong school community grow into the best place it can be for our students and all who enter its gates. As we come to the end of the term thank you for the many and varied ways that you have supported our wonderful school community. Let us conƟnue to pray for Sonny Moore during his Ɵme of illness and remember his family. Happy Easter and happy holidays to you all. A word from Mr King Last week Sacred Heart began working with our students on The Mindfulness Curriculum. It is a framework and resource to support our teachers in bringing mindfulness into their classrooms. The Mindfulness Curriculum is a structured but flexible framework that we are using as a social and emotional learning program in the classroom. The Mindfulness Curriculum is based around 20 topics which have been mapped to the Australian Curriculum and supports students in K-6 to develop self awareness, self management, social awareness and social management skills. Some of the areas that are covered are;

Managing Emotions Self Compassion Optimism Gratitude Empathy Positive Relationships Resilience

The reason for us devoting time and resources to this important area can be seen by the following points;

Wellbeing is essential for learning. With mindfulness students are more focused and more engaged learners. 1 in 7 primary aged children and 1 in 4 secondary aged children are experiencing mental health problems. Society is experiencing major and rapid changes and this is having an impact on the wellbeing of students. The use of technology, smartphones and social media by children is affecting learning and there's more testing and pressure for students to perform. Wellbeing and learning can't be separated. One supports the other. Wellbeing underpins the way children feel about themselves and how they relate to others. Wellbeing affects how children think, learn and engage. Mindfulness can help with wellbeing, bringing about strong improvements in attention. Mindfulness is a skill for life. Mindfulness can calm the mind, focus our attention and help us make the most out of life. Mindfulness is about focusing atten-tion on the here and now, rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Good mental health in childhood sets young people up for the future and their career. Mindfulness is a skill that can build the foundations for optimal student concentration and attention. A regular mindfulness practice can have positive bene-fits on both students and educator engagement.

This program will support and strengthen the work we do with our Habits of Mind and Bluearth programs, with the combination of all three ensuring our students are given the best resources possible to be able to apply mindfulness when difficult situations arise. Feel free to speak to your class teacher if you need any further information. Mr King
