SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION

Scripture Scholars tell us that this Sunday’s Gospel is a metaphor against the Pharisees, i.e. Jesus is the gate and God’s teachings come through Him rather than through the Pharisees, who were the popular teachers of God’s people until the advent of the Messiah. Recall the formula use by Jesus: “You have heard it said of old, but I say…” God spoke to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. He gave them the law as their life directives, and subsequently sent them prophets to challenge those who had drifted from the precepts of that law. Jesus superseded/fulfilled what God had previously communicated, for He was God Himself, come to live among us. Recall Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration: “This is My Beloved Son…” Recall the Passion narratives. When Jesus died, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, (signifying that the Temple sacrifices were now passé), there was a great earthquake (theophany like what happened on Sinai) which opened the tombs for the resurrected holy ones, and the Gentile (i.e. non Jews) soldiers at the foot of the cross attested: “Truly this was the Son of God!” With His resurrection the disciples finally grasped that death (the consequence of sin) had been conquered, and a whole new era had begun. Circumcision no longer marked the identification of God’s people, but rather now it was Baptism. With this in mind, now think of what it must have been like to have been a member of that Jewish audience listening to St. Peter as narrated in today’s first reading. God in Jesus now preached by Peter, was challenging them to move on. Their response? “What are we to do?” Don’t think for a moment that the very same question is no longer relevant to us. Pieties, formalities and traditions don’t count. What matters is where we stand before God at this very moment. Our prayers must always include: “What are we to do?”

Our Altar Bread and Wine for the month of May has been gifted in memory of John and Tove Hogan (BdayRems) by Their Children.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020

SCHOOL NEWS Missing You: The administration, faculty and staff of your Catholic school continue to work from home in providing the best possible distance learning for the students. Mr. Casile and Father Yanas keep us informed, united and faith filled. We look forward to the day that we can be together again in one space; filling the church and halls with joy and laughter. You are all in our daily prayers so keep safe and healthy! Sharing the Sweets: There were eight boxes of Hershey’s candy bars remaining from our recent fundraiser just sitting in the school office. It was decided that others would benefit from a sweet treat and we know that most people love chocolate so three boxes have been donated to Vanderheyden and five were given to the Troy Fire Fighters. Registration Continues: Registration for the 2020-2021 school year continues. Our current families have a re-registration packet that they can complete and mail into the school and all new and interested families may contact the school for information and a registration packet. The school office answering machine is routinely checked but it would be best to contact Administrative Assistant Janet MacLasco at [email protected]. We are all currently working from home but do drop into the office as needed.

Thank You: Your support of the Price Chopper Tools for Schools Program allowed us to acquire several pieces of equipment for our gym program, a new clock for the faculty room and a large package of markers for the office. We had just over 75,000 points to “spend” in their catalog and our physical education teacher, Bobby Burns, was able to order something off of his “wish list”.

I was told it’s springtime but you wouldn't know it by the weather. So let’s make Sacred Heart beautiful again this Spring. Will

you adopt a section of our gardens and planters? We’ll have a gardening day in May to dress up our church grounds. Call the office 518-274-1363!
