PRINCIPAL

Staff Development Day or Student Free Day

On Friday 7 June, the staff at SHP joined with other schools from Broken Bay to study the new PDHPE Syllabus which will be mandatory in 2020. We are looking at the new structures around scope and sequences and other impacts for our school community. The course provides students with opportunities to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity. Students develop self-management, interpersonal and movement skills to become empowered, self-confident and socially responsible citizens.

We look forward to working with this new syllabus. We will be talking to our new Kindergarten parents at the next ‘pop-up play’ about this change.

On the first day of Term 3, Monday 22 July, the staff of SHP will be having a Spirituality Day. This is a student free day.

Debating

Last week Sacred Heart hosted the debating circle and once again our debaters were well prepared and confident. This week our teams went to St Patrick’s, Asquith and we thank the parents, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Chu who were able to drive our students to this event.

“Tell Them From Me” Survey

There are a few days left to complete the survey “Tell Them From Me” (TTFM). This is a complete evaluation system for measuring student engagement, wellbeing and classroom climate and other factors known to affect learning outcomes. The data gathered is used to inform future strategic direction for our school community. We encourage you to take the time to fill out this short survey (it will take approximately 15 minutes). Please access the survey via the link below.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Candela Mission Peru

Mrs Mary Rajca will visit on Monday, June 24th to speak to students at our school about the work of the Sisters of Mercy in the shanty town of Candela in Lima, Peru.

The mission supports women through a program that teaches them to make beautiful handicrafts. The proceeds from the sale of these crafts give the women an income so they can provide for their families.

There will be a sale of the beautiful handicrafts that the women have made before school on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday next week. The items for sale will be priced at $2, $5 & $10.

All money raised go back to the women who have made the goods. This money is used by the mothers to buy basic necessities for their families.

Your support of the mission is always greatly appreciated.

Here is Sister Joan Doyle RSM, one of the Sisters of Mercy, with Ellen and her family outside their home in Candela.

Reconciliation Congratulations to all of our students who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time last night.

Through this wonderful sacrament of divine love and mercy, “God called us out of darkness into His wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9).

May God bless you! The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus The Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most famous religious devotions to Jesus. It represents His divine love for humanity.

FAMILY FUN FAIR This year we will be holding a Family Fun Fair for all of our family, friends and the local community to come along and be a part of what promises to be a fabulous event for Sacred Heart, Pymble. The team are working hard behind the scenes to bring together what will be an amazing day filled with fun and laughter for everyone. This is a call out to anyone within the school community in a position to donate a prize for the raffle or auction. This could be anything from one or two nights stay at a family holiday house, the provision of a service from the company you work for or simply a gift which you are happy to donate to the cause. All contributions are greatly appreciated and will help to make the Fair a success for the school and your kids. Michelle Key & Kate Bell

AQUABLISS POOL

New Management, New Methodology, Newly Refurbished www.aquabliss.com.au Aquabliss General Manager, Matt Renshaw, two times Commonwealth Games gold medal swimmer, took over the reins, (or rather the “lane ropes”), at Aquabliss in late January 2018. As an elite athlete, Matt’s focus on perfecting swimming techniques is the ideal alliance for Aquabliss’ slogan and key objective of “learning to swim well” - as opposed to just learning to swim. Learning to swim well provides children with essential swim safety skills.

“If a child develops good swimming techniques, making them a stronger swimmer, they will more likely enjoy swimming, improve faster and not tire as quickly in the water. A stronger swimmer makes a safer swimmer,” said Matt Renshaw. To improve how Aquabliss teaches children to swim, a new swim methodology was introduced in October last year. Matt Renshaw explains that “the new methodology focuses strongly on technique and identifying more clearly what skills are needed at each swim level. Such clarity will provide clearer feedback to parents.” Introducing change is generally never easy nor rarely perfect. Aquabliss acknowledges there were some unplanned challenges when implementing the new methodology last year and some changes were not handled as best as they should have been. However, Aquabliss’ new methodology is now fully bedded down and the swim school is under the new hands-on management of Jessica Toomey and Carlena Robb. (More on Jessica and Carlena in a future newsletter.) A further improvement is the recently refurbished premises, with newly installed heaters keeping the air temperature warm, complementing the toasty 31-degree pool temperature.
