Third Sunday of Easter THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. Tercer Domingo de Pascua LA PRESENCIA DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO Hoy tenemos un episodio único en los Hechos de los Apóstoles. ¡Un grupo de personas que llena una habitación es bautizado con el Espíritu Santo antes de que se bautiza-ran con agua! La palabra que se usa para describir el suce-so: “el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre ellos” (Hechos 10:44), es característica de la forma en que el Espíritu obra en todo el libro de los Hechos: de manera poderosa y sor-prendente. Aunque este “bautismo” no es la norma para describir el bautismo en el Nuevo Testamento, es sin em-bargo un buen recordatorio de que el Espíritu Santo no está controlado por si hemos vertido el agua o no, sino que nuestros signos sacramentales revelan al Espíritu presente y obrando entre nosotros. As we continue the season of Sacramental Ceremonies, we ask for your continued prayers for all those that are in preparation

to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO MARY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

The Ascension of the Lord Throughout the season of Easter, we ponder the mysteries that are central to our faith in Jesus Christ. We reflect on Jesus’ life, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection and consider the meaning of Christ’s life and love. Today we celebrate Jesus’ ascension and wonder with the apostles what we are to do and how we are to live as a result. As disciples, we are called to put our faith into action, grow to be more like the Lord, be united with other believers in com-munity, and bring others to Christ through the way we live our lives. In so doing, we will live a life worthy of our call in Christ, a life of unity in the Spirit, of hope and peace. WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT THE SKY? “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” We can only imagine the apostles’ astonish-ment, not only at Jesus’ ascension, but at the message from the men in white garments who appeared at that very moment. Jesus had been crucified and died, rose from the dead and spent time with them, teaching them to understand how he had fulfilled all that had been written about the Messiah, and suddenly, he was taken up to heaven. Surely they would have wondered what was happening and what the meaning of Jesus’ ascension was. We wonder with them. What does Jesus’ ascension call us to be or do? We rely on the testimony of those who were with Jesus to grasp the mystery of his life, death, resurrection, and ascension. Their witness calls us to believe in Jesus, grow in relationship with him, and live as his disciples in the world. YOU HAVE SEEN AND HEARD, NOW GO DO It isn’t enough to say we believe in Jesus. We are called to live as members of Christ’s body and share the joy of faith with others. We do this by discerning and fulfilling our vocation, the ways in which God calls each of us to live. Often when we think of vocation, the first thing that comes to mind is the priesthood. But each of us experience vocational calls, to our state in life and to the ways in which we live, work, and serve. Each of us has been given different gifts and are called according to our gifts. We are equipped with talents and skills through which we may contribute to bringing the mercy, compassion, truth, goodness, and beauty of God’s love to the world. What are your particular gifts and talents? How may you be called to use them to bring Christ’s love to others, leading them to see and hear the Good News of Jesus Christ? FEAST OF FAITH The Creed Following the readings and the homily, we stand together and say or sing the Creed, our profession of faith. The Creed is a solemn statement of belief, a “rule of faith” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 67). It states the core of what we believe about God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The language of the Creed is knotty and difficult at times, precisely because its purpose is to express with precision what we believe about God. The Creed that we pray most often, the Nicene Creed, came out of the earliest ecumenical councils: Nicea in 325 and Constantinople in 381. It originated in a time of great controversy about the divin-ity of Christ, and thus the longest section of the Creed relates to Christ, truly human and truly God. The Creed is both communal and personal: it is “we,” but it is also “I.” In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, it is only after listening to the teaching of the Church and professing faith in the Holy Trinity that the candidate is admitted to the sacra-ments. Padre Gregory Elder

It is with great excitement that we |announce his successor Father Gregory Elder

Father Gregory Elder is a priest of the Diocese of San Bernardino. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop Gerald Barnes, under the Pastoral Provision for married Anglican Clergy in 2006, after serving for twenty years as an Anglican priest. Father Elder was educated at Indiana Univer-sity-Bloomington where he studied Ancient and Medieval History, and at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford here he studied Theology. While living in England, Father Elder met his future wife, Dr. Sarah O'Brien, who immigrated to the US after their marriage. He earned the Master of Divinity Degree at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in 1983 and was ordained as an Anglican priest in the same year. While serving in the Episcopal Church, he earned his MA and Ph.D. in History from the University of California, San Diego. Sarah became Catholic in 1987 and Gregory in 2003. Father Elder's authorization for ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood as a married Anglican priest was decreed by St Pope John Paul II personally, at the request of Bishop Gerald Barnes of San Bernardino and (then) Cardinal Josef Ratzinger. Until recently, Dr Sarah was Pastoral Coordinator at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Riverside. Since his first ordination, Father Gregory has served in eight pastoral assign-ments. He is a fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Father Elder is Professor Emeritus of History and Humanities at Moreno Valley College, where he taught for over 28 years. He can be found on Twitter @fatherelder. Father Gregory and Dr. Sarah Elder live in Redlands and have two grown children and two grandchildren. Monsignor Lincoln will be inviting Father Elder to visit the parish over the next several months.
