COMING OF AGEThe Gospel story recalls the bar mitzvah of Jesus at age twelve. Like all Jewish boys, he took an adult’s place for the first time with the teachers of the law in the temple. He accepted responsibility for his actions before God and his family. Joseph and Mary anxiously sought him; his answer came from a new maturity they did not understand. Just as Hannah entrusted Samuel to the Lord and Joseph and Mary raised Jesus for God, we become children of the Holy One to advance in “wisdom and age and favor before God and people.”
