THANK YOU Lori Ward hosted the annual get-together for the Sa-cred Heart Home Visitors recently. I was unable to attend but know it was good because I was given “goodies” to eat from there. I would like to thank you Home Visitors for all of your visits to those who are unable to attend Mass. Receiving the Eucharist and visiting with someone from “church” helps to feel a part of Sacred Heart. Thanks also to Lori for the good job she is doing as the Home Visitors Coor-dinator. Special thanks for the gift you Home Visitors gave me. What a nice surprise. May God continue to bless us all, Shirley Dont

Long-time RCIA team members Terry Ulrich and Greta Koppin were among the parishioners wishing Tammy well at the fare-well reception last Saturday evening.

Thank You from Tammy Thank you to all the parishioners at Sacred Heart who have shared their faith with me and my family through the years. It has been an honor and a privi-lege to minister to and with you for over 20 years. Thank you for your prayers, your love, your tears, your hugs, your friendships, the beautiful farewell reception, the wedding prayer shawl, the thoughtful gifts and cards. I will miss all of you very much. Please keep me and my family in your prayers as we relocate to Davenport and I begin a new phase of ministry as campus minister at St. Ambrose Univer-sity. God Bless You All! Tammy Norcross-Reitzler [email protected]

Looking forward to having the Sacred Heart Church members and friends join us on a discovery of "Northeast Iowa Treasures" by boarding the Hawkeye Stages motor coach on the morning of August 11th for a fun filled day of exploring! After a morning break a visit to the Trappist Caskets located by Peosta and upon arrival a tour as well as a power point presentation of the his-tory of making urns and caskets by the Trappists will be shown. Lunch will be served in East Dubuque at Timmerman's Supper Club overlooking the Mississippi River. Our next attraction will be the Dickeyville Grotto which is located just over the border in Wisconsin. This is a creation

in stone, mortar and bright colored objects which were collected all over the world to be displayed at this grotto. Another form of a true craftsman will be dis-played at the Becker Woodcarving Museum in Dyersville. The museum displays the largest carved clock in Iowa, chains, decoys, toys and as well as the 12 Apos-tles. Board the coach to Petersburg to visit the Saint Peter & Paul Church where a mass will be celebrated by Father Reynolds. On to Barn Happy located in Ce-dar Falls for an evening meal.

Marriage Moments

"The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant...finding a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it." (Mt 13:45‐46) Your spouse is like that pearl. Don't let work, or projects, or hobbies, or even your children, bump him or her from first place. It's priceless.

Parenting Pointers

The last Sunday in July has been designated as "Parents Day." Why not make it more than a Hallmark kind of day. Reflect on how your children need the talents of both parents to thrive. If you're a solo parent, use this opportunity to seek out a trusted friend to provide some of the skills you lack to round out your child's development.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

A profound stewardship prayer is offered by the young king Solomon in today’s first reading. He asks the Lord to give him an understanding heart, compassion towards God’s people and the insight to distinguish right from wrong. An under-standing heart, or wisdom, is a gift from God. It is a gift that enables us to make good decisions and prudent choices. Culti-vating and sharing this gift is essential, especially when poor decisions and lack of compassion have consequences that af-fect the lives of others. Do we exercise good stewardship over the gift of wisdom? Do we share our compassionate hearts with others?

Food Pantry Sunday Are you ready to fight hunger right here in our community? The first Sunday of each month has been designated as Food Pantry Sunday. Mem-bers of our parish are invited

to bring nonperishable food items or mone-tary gifts on the first Sunday of each month to donate to the food pantry. Place your do-nations in the food pantry box in the vesti-bule of the church.

dear Padre Who was the

thirteenth apostle?

My granddaughter says her teacher said there were thirteen apostles. Who is num-ber thirteen?

When we re-call the apostles, we usually think of the Twelve, an early tradi-tion that the Church is a reconstituted Israel based on its original twelve tribes.

In the Gospels of Matthew (10:2–4), Mark (3:14–19), and Luke (6:13–16) and in Acts of the Apostles (1:13, 16–18), all twelve apostles are named. Each list begins with Peter, fol-lowed by Andrew, James, and John, with Judas always last. Then, except for Philip and Thomas (listed in all four Gos-pels and in Acts), varying translations are provided for the different names of the Twelve. John’s Gospel, which does not name all twelve, adds Nathanael (1:45–51). Any of these could be mistaken for a thirteenth apostle.

But your granddaughter is probably talking about Matthias. When the apostles gathered to choose a replace-ment for Judas Iscariot, two men were nominated: Joseph, also called Barsabbas, and Matthias. Before they chose, the apostles prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place” (Acts 1:24–25).

Then they voted by casting lots (throwing pebbles or straws), and the lots fell on Matthias. From then on, Mat-thias was counted as one of the twelve apostles.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. Uncondi-tional is one of those movies you will long remem-ber. It is based on a true story of the murder of a chil-dren’s illustrator’s husband and the u n p r e d i c t a b l e events that fol-low. In her search for the murderer, the artist goes to the “projects” neighborhood and there meets people who are as suspicious of white people as she is of black people. Unexpect-edly she fines the suspect but must accept the fact that he was as noble as her hus-band. She also meets people, although poor, who have their own dignity and moral sense of right and wrong. They too learn that mid-dle class people have integrity. This movie is a beautiful example of self sacrifice and the true dignity of the human person. This is good mystery with equal amounts of sus-pense and pathos. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

If you could ask for anything, what would it be? In W. W. Jacobs’ classic story “The Monkey’s Paw,” a couple’s first wish is granted at a terrible price, and the owners realize what the old adage tells us: “Be careful what you wish for—you just might get it.”

In today’s first reading, Solomon is given the opportunity to ask God for anything. After praying, he fi-nally asks for wisdom, that he might discern what is right. God affirms the goodness of the wish and, noting that he didn’t ask for riches or victory in war, grants it gladly.

In spite of some more questionable choices later in his life, Solomon will always be remembered for this request. Wisdom, as we find out in another part of Scripture, is God’s “unfailing treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God” (Wisdom 7:14).

In the Gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of God both to a treasure and to someone who searches for one. I think the desire for the kingdom of God and the desire for wisdom come out of the same longing in our hearts. We might find God’s wisdom in surprising places, but once we find it, we must be willing to give all we have to acquire it, for it will help us know what is of God.

At the same time, the kingdom of God goes in search of us. Maybe we are God’s pearls; with Wisdom as a guide, each of us can grow as children and friends of God, knowing what is right.

Find Wisdom, then, and do what you must to get it. When we do this, we will also find God.
