PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F.Brosnan

God, unlike certain American politicians, seems to have a soft spot for resident aliens, as the Book of Exodus makes clear today. The Lord reminds the Jews of Second Temple times that when they were known as Hebrews by their Egyptian landlords in ages past, they were themselves aliens; displaced, homesick and nostalgic, though they had, for generations, long sojourned in Egypt. Perhaps God wanted them to recognize that deeply felt consciousness Homer had already discovered when, in The Odyssey, he coined the word nostalgia (literally, the pain for home). Perhaps God wanted them to know that their pain-for-home was at the core of all human experience.

Along with aliens, God includes widows and orphans in the list of those whose needs you should heed. Though I’m not ‘technically’ an orphan, I do believe I have an orphan soul. When I was assigned as a deacon to the parish where I would be ordained a priest and serve for the first five years of my priesthood, I met an extraordinary person in Mary the Cook (as she was known by all). Mary was an alien herself, a Newfie by birth, who emigrated to Brooklyn to spend the next sixty years as live-in housekeeper, cook, and surrogate mother to the many priests who served at Queen of All Saints Church. Mary had little formal education (she had to raise her younger siblings after her mother died when she was eleven), but she was very, very wise. Mary had a nickname for everyone and I was no exception. She called me “The Orph” because, she said, I had an orphan soul (though, at that point in time, she knew nothing of my background as a relinquished and then adopted child). Mary perceived something in me that fit the description. I think she was right. Orphans and aliens, immigrants and refugees, seem at times lost-at-sea, rudderless for sure, homeless even though they might have the best of homes and come from the most loving of families. Hiding that feeling of being adrift can be detected by the very wise and by those who come to recognize the same feeling in themselves.

Don’t get me wrong: this is not necessarily some wretched saga or a terrible or dreadful condition; on the contrary, it can be the source of a formidable strength. I discovered this when I was living and working with Korean Catholics many years ago. Amid a culture and language so different from my own, I realized one day that feeling different, being the resident alien, was a familiar feeling: I felt at home in places I didn’t seem to belong. Whatever is the source or cause of such a feeling, it has served me well through the years.

In today’s gospel encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees, things seem less confrontational than usual; the conversation even borders on the intimate. Matthew tells us that the Pharisees heard that Jesus “silenced the Sadducees” – their chief rivals in religion. Perhaps this soothed old wounds, made them genuinely interested in

what Jesus’ thought and believed. So they ask him about the greatest commandment. The Pharisees seem to be going out on a limb, making an effort to sincerely listen. What do you really believe, Jesus of Nazareth? What are you really thinking? Was it defiance on Jesus’ part or just fear of opening up that makes him resort to a pious but hackneyed response: love God, neighbor and self.

Life seems sometimes to be a work of fiction. In trying to make sense out of the losses and gains we experience in life, we need to tell a story, connect the dots, discover or create the reasons why we’re us and not them, why we ended up here and not there. Sometimes the story rings true, sometimes not. And fiction is a strange category because, in library-lingo, it’s the default position; non-fiction being defined in terms of it, as if it were a sub-category of fiction. In other words, fiction - not fact - is what counts in the end; because fiction can ultimately be more true than mere fact. Fiction is how we make sense of life, how we go about rendering meaning from what has been rent from us and what we have rendered in return.

If fiction is putting a story together in order to make sense of life’s experience, then these Pastoral Reflections, for better or worse, have been attempts at rendering how I see life in general and my life in particular. I hope I have given you, and myself, a glimpse of what I really think, what I really believe - and have not too often fallen into pious sentiment or hackneyed clichés.

It’s the work of a lifetime – this rendering – and needs a sounding board in order to work out the hidden meaning. Thank you for being my sounding board these past years, allowing me to express myself in these reflections, these attempts at rendering meaning, imagining purpose, creating fiction that’s truer than fact, making a story out of the seeming randomness of things – the gives and takes of life. It’s been a novel experience. THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 Response: Psalm 18 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ITEM ONE: FATHER JACK MALONEY Congratulations to Father Jack Maloney who turned 80 on October 23RD. You may know that Father Jack now lives out in the Hamptons and is finding the Sunday trek to Bayside a bit more challenging than when he was only 79; so, sadly, he has decided to complete his time here at Sacred Heart this weekend. I’m sure all will miss him, his good humor, his welcoming and gracious personality, his many kindnesses, and his all too human oversights and interesting and sometimes hilarious homiletic digressions. I know I speak for all when I say we will surely miss him and wish him much health and happiness in his semi-retirement. Thanks so much for the memories, Father Jack.

ITEM TWO: THANK YOU

Many thanks to all who honored me by their presence at the 5:00pm Mass last Saturday. I also want to thank those who made the liturgy especially beautiful: Vivian Wohlfarth, Eileen Edebhols, the 11am Mass Choir, 9:30am Mass Children’s Choir, and the 5pm Mass Quartet. I was very moved, and rather overwhelmed by it all, having received so many good wishes from so many of you. Please accept this general THANK YOU until I have time to respond individually (which will probably not be for a while – until I get settled in at my new place).

ITEM THREE: TERMS FOR PASTORS Please see the flyer in today’s bulletin featuring the article, Six and Six (by an anonymous priest), with his take on terms for pastors. I found it informative and apropos of my situation at the moment. Hope you find it so as well.

ITEM FOUR: FATHER BROSNAN’S ADDRESS

My new assignment begins on November 1ST, so I will be saying Mass until October 31ST - including next weekend.

My new address: Father Tom Brosnan Holy Innocents Church 279 E 17th Street Brooklyn, New York 11226 718-469-9500

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ITEM FIVE: MASS SCHEDULE

In response to Bishop DiMarzio’s directive on how to evaluate our current weekend Mass schedule, the Parish Pastoral Council has decided to discontinue the 12:30pm Sunday Mass. Many thanks to all who participated in the poll taken regarding the change in our weekend Mass schedule. Some 600 ballots were collected in which there was a clear preference to move the 11:00am Sunday Mass to 11:30am on Sundays. Thus, the new weekend Mass schedule will be: Saturdays: 5:00pm Sundays: 9:30am, 11:30am, 5:00pm This new schedule will go into effect beginning the weekend of January 6-7, 2018.

ITEM SIX: BRIDGE TO LIFE Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart, The Bridge to Life would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation of $375.55 towards your parish’s recent baby bottle campaign. Your donation will help us assist the families who visit us. As you know, The Bridge to Life supports families from the five boroughs of New York City with counseling and material assistance through our Bridge’s Women’s Support Centers. It is with your help that we can continue our mission of saving babies and helping families in crisis. On behalf of all the mothers, babies and children, we sincerely thank you. Their names are inscribed on a banner that stands near the baptismal font and in our Book of Remembrance; also letters have been sent to the families inviting them to attend this special liturgy. Everyone, however, is invited. It is an opportunity for us as a community of believers to pray for those who have died and to console those who mourn.

In an effort to encourage the young to consider a vocation as a priest or Religious Sister or Brother, the bishop asks us to participate in the Called by Name Program. If you know a boy or girl, young man or woman, who you think would make a good priest or Religious, the bishop asks you to submit their name so they might be personally invited to consider a church vocation. Just fill out a Called by Name Card – available at the doors of the church - and drop it off at the rectory. Names will be submitted to the diocesan Vocation Directors and the individual will be contacted by them.
