Gospel Summary Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that he is the Good Shepherd. He makes a distinction between good shepherds, hired hands, and wolves. As a good shepherd, Jesus knows his sheep and his sheep know him. He is so devoted to his sheep that he is willing to die for them. Not only is this image fitting for Jesus and God’s people, but it helps explain the love of God for his son. Reflection for Families When we consider the people in our children’s lives, we find most of them represented in this scripture. There are the good shepherds. Mostly they are parents and grandparents or other relatives who significantly take care in our children’s up bringing. In this group we go to the limits for our children. Then there are hired hands who help us because they benefit in some way – usually monetarily. But when push comes to shove, how much of themselves will they invest? It even happens that sometimes the people we thought were shepherds turn out to be hired hands. Finally there are the wolves – all the things that distract the shepherds or lead the sheep away. As parents we need to be aware of who these people are in our children’s lives. We even need to look into our own hearts and desires and be certain that there are no wolves luring us from our precious sheep.

Bread and Wine for the Week If you would like to offer the bread and wine for the week in memory of someone, you may do so by calling the Rectory at 610-623-0409. The offering for the week is $20.00. Offertory Gifts If Mass is being celebrated for your family member or friend please remember that your family may bring the three offertory gifts to the altar. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We need your support to continue to strengthen the Church at home and help mission dioceses right here in the United States. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal supports dioceses in the United States and its territories that lack the resources to provide basic pastoral ministry to their populations. Through annual grants, Catholic Home Missions funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, Hispanic ministry, and other pastoral programs for dioceses in need. As a result of parishioners’ generosity, Catholic Home Missions impacts the lives of nearly nine million Catholics. The dioceses funded by the appeal comprise nearly 45 percent of all US dioceses. For example, in the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, there are approximately 35,000 Catholics living within the borders of the diocese and several thousand of these Catholics have become estranged from the practice of their faith. In order to reach out to these people, the diocese must overcome the challenge of distance, as well as a shortage of priests. The small Catholic population spans 14 counties, with only 36 active and 12 retired priests. This shortage leaves one county in the diocese with only a single Catholic church and one priest. With a grant from Catholic Home Missions, the diocese is training seven seminarians for the priesthood. These young men will return to their diocese in order to administer the sacraments within the parishes and to evangelize those who have fallen away and are waiting to be called back into the fold. Mission dioceses often struggle with high rates of poverty and a lack of educated pastoral and lay leadership. With your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal can continue to provide catechesis, lay leadership training, funding for seminarian education, and other essential pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses. Please be generous in the Catholic Home Missions Appeal and help strengthen the Church at home. Your support will truly make a difference. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, + Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia
