CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM THE

PASTOR Merry Christmas! On behalf of the entire staff at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s, I want to wish you a blessed and joyous Christmas. While the stories of the Lord Jesus’ birth are so familiar to us from the Gospel of Matthew – “Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about…” or the Gospel of Luke - “In those days, a decree went out to Caesar Augustus…” one of the scripture readings appointed for Christmas is less familiar, coming from the Letter to the Hebrews: “Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is a reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs (Hebrews, 1:1-4).” This is the Heart of the mystery of Christmas – the new born baby, lying in a manger, the child of Mary, the Son of God! His name is Jesus, but he is called “Emmanuel” – a name which means “God is with us!” This is the most profound meaning of Christmas – and of our Christian Faith. In Jesus Christ, God is with us: in our joyous celebrations, in our personal disasters, at our Baptism, as we are facing death – God is with us through Jesus Christ! Today, we can almost hear him whimpering, lying in the arms of his Mother. Yet, Jesus calls to us, today: ‘Come to me, you who labor and are weary!’ Jesus guides us today, because he is ‘the way, the truth, and the life!’ By his presence today, Jesus assures us: ‘do not be afraid!’ In the words of his resurrection, Jesus describes his availability to us today: “I am always with you – today and every day – even to the end of the world!” It’s not always easy to articulate our faith, but I hope, as we celebrate with Christians around the world, that this begins to describe the significance of our faith – our faith in God’s Son and Mary’s Son – Jesus Christ the Lord! A Blessed Christmas to you and yours!

Fr. John Sassani Pastor

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS ON THE FEAST OF CHRISTMAS “The Baby that we see in the manger is God himself who made himself man, to show us how much he desires our good, how much he love us: God has become one of us, that he might make himself close to each of us, that he might conquer evil, liberate us from sin, give us hope, that he might tell us that we are never alone. We can always look to Him without fear, calling Him Father, sure that in every moment, in every situation of life, even the most difficult ones, He never forgets us. May we say ever more often: Yes, God himself takes care of me, he loves me. Jesus was born for me, too; I must trust in him always.” (Pope Benedict Emeritus 2010) CCD classes will not meet during Christmas break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. O Come let us Adore Him!

Michelle Solomon, Director of Religious Ed. CHRISTMAS WISHES FROM THE GUILD OF

ST. FRANCIS The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in Wisconsin remind us from the writing of Thomas of Celano in his book The Life of St. Francis that Francis named the Nativity scene a “crèche,” the French word for cradle. “Francis created the first crèche using real people, a real manger, a real ox and ass, and real shepherds. The Incarnation – Christmas – was a key component in the spirituality of Francis. He wanted to celebrate the Incarnation in a special way. Francis wanted people to see and experience how He [Jesus] lay in a manger with an ox and an ass standing by – how He lay upon the hay where He had been placed. It was Christmas Eve in the year 1223. At the appointed time, Franciscan brothers came to the new Bethlehem. Men, women, and children from the area also came to celebrate. The torches they carried lit up the night as they approached the crèche. Once again shepherds were walking in the night to come and adore Him. All were filled with joy over the mystery of the Incarnation. And a great tradition began. As you look upon your Nativity set, may you remember and celebrate again God’s love for His creation. To show His abundant love, mercy, and forgiveness. He became a person like us. This is what the crèche symbolizes.” Wishing each of you a loving, merciful, and holy Christmas from the members of the Guild of St. Francis of Assisi.

DEAF CATHOLIC COMMUNITY As Pope Francis reminded all youth in his World Youth Day 2016 homily in Krakow, Poland, last summer that Jesus, as the Son of God, is always with us every day in our lives, he said it perfectly, “...He [Jesus] wants to enter your homes, to dwell in your daily lives: in your studies, your first years of work, your friendships and affections, your hopes and dreams. How greatly he desires that you bring all this to him in prayer! How much he hopes that, in all the “contracts” and “chats” of each day, pride of place be given to the golden thread of prayer! How much he wants his word to be able to speak to you day after day, so that you can make his Gospel your own, so that it can serve as a compass for you on the highways of life!” Indeed, that is what God has had in His mind for us through His salvation plan. That's why He gives us Jesus on Christmas! God intended to remind us of a great light in the midst of darkness that can always give us hope whenever we face certain struggles in our daily lives. How often do we hear our family members or friends saying, “There is a light at the end of the tunnel”? That light can be seen through our words and actions, especially when we give love to others and receive the love of others. The light is seen in the Gospel of Luke when “the glory of the Lord shone around [the shepherds]” while they were “keeping the night watch over their flock.” (2:8-9). This light as the “glory of the Lord” serves as an amazing grace from God for the shepherds to realize no matter how much of a hardship one's life can be, there is always the light! When the angel of the Lord announced the “good news of great joy” to them that Jesus, our Savior had been born in a manger and exhorted them to go out and visit with him (Luke 2:10). Last summer, our Deaf youth group endured a total of 18 miles pilgrimage walk from our hotel to Campus Misericordiae, a large gathering field where the Closing Mass with Pope Francis was held. Without a doubt, the shepherds after receiving the good news from the angel had to endure an even longer walk to meet Jesus. Being on the 18-mile trekking under the hot sun may seem too challenging for us, however, we persevered because we knew that God was with us through this hard challenge. How did we know? We had each other and there was one convenience store on the side of the road where there was an “over-abundance" of food and water for the pilgrims. God indeed knows what He was doing! This challenging trek still reminds us that there is still suffering out there and that it is up to us to hang on to our faith in order to see how our suffering can

lead us to see “the light” that is the glory of God! That is what Christmas is all about...the light is always there! It is our faith that helps and supports us to find “the light”. Like the shepherds, we all can LOUDLY WITH JOY praise God by saying, “Glory to God in the highest!” (Luke 2;14). May the great light shine upon us!

Merry Christmas, Fr. Shawn Carey Christmas in 1900 at Sacred Heart James Linnehan, born in 1892 at 38 Sumner St wrote these reminiscences in the early 1940’s: (Mainly direct quotes from his unpublished book). “We attended the Sacred Heart Church in Newton Centre. Father Dennis Wholey was the first pastor of this church and his memory is still revered by all who knew him…..It was considered a big parish; [miles wide] ….The church was about a mile from our home and I find the first faint memory I can recall of it….. is attending midnight Mass at the beginning of the present century. [1900] I was 8 years old and I went with my father. I can recall leaving the house and when we were out on Sumner St.; I recollect turning and waving to my mother who was watching us from the window. I remember, too, that there was snow on the ground and the when we reached [and crossed] Commonwealth Ave, my father decided to walk on the tracks [along Centre St in those days] as they had been freshly plowed. We walked the tracks right to the church, but beyond entering the brilliantly lighted [Sacred Heart was the first electrified building in Newton Center] edifice; I remember nothing of the ceremony or of the return home. It is one of my first memories, so I must have been thrilled at the sight and of being old enough to attend midnight Mass. Christmas was a very happy season then, as it is now. For us, however, it lacked most of the glamour and commercialism that we know now and probably we were brought much closer to the real spirit of the season than our children are today. Christmas trees were plentiful but they were a drab ornament without lights and the profusion of gifts and decorations we have today. The wealthier people illuminated them with candles but this practice was taboo in the poorer homes because of the danger of fire… The Christmas season was climaxed by the annual party at the church a few nights after Xmas. This was strictly a children’s party given by the pastor. It consisted of the singing of Xmas carols, a real Punch and Judy show that never failed to bring the house down, a talk by Santa Claus and the presentation of gifts to all by Father Wholey. Everyone was given a large bar of pop-corn, a big bag of Xmas candy and some kind of toy. It was a gala affair and undoubtly constituted the biggest night of the winter season. The Punch and Judy show was sure to be talked of and re-acted for weeks.” What are your early memories of Christmas at Sacred Heart?
