The Amador Choraliers began in 1963 and has been entertaining the Foothill communities ever since. The group memorizes all their music and entertains their audiences with occasional props and choreography. Rehearsals are from mid-January to May for the spring concert series and early September to December for the Christmas concert series. Each concert series has three concerts, two in the evening and one matinee. The concerts appeal to a wide audience as they include many genres of music, such as blues, jazz, gospel, country, classical, Big Band era, rock and roll, and folk. They also may include music from Broadway, the movies and television. Though it is a mixed chorus, concerts also include the Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus, small ensembles, solos, duets, etc.

Amador Choraliers

The Cantare Chorale of the Sierra Foothills passionately understands how the power of music can bring people of all ages and cultures together. For over 20 years, its members have volunteered to sing for enjoyment and for their love of the arts. By performing quality choral music in a wide variety of musical styles, they lift hearts and bring smiles to the faces of audience members of all ages. Cantare Chorale, based in El Dorado County, gives spring and winter concerts, performs annually at the State Capi-tol in the rotunda, at the Memorial Day ceremony in Cameron Park, the Placerville Festival of Lights and a host of other venues including bookings and charity events.

Recently called “a small group with a big sound” by a music reviewer, Cantare Chorale consists of performers from diverse musical and personal backgrounds including administrators, businesspeople, clergy members, educators, engineers, homemakers, designers, professional musicians and talented amateurs who love to sing. New members are welcomed to join the group each season.

Cantare Chorale

Director: Dr. Jeffrey Nelson www.contarechoral.com530-677-6964

www.amadorchoraliers.orgemail: [email protected]: Irv Gidding, Karen Reed, JR Keith, and Darlene Williams

Amador Choraliers rotates director duties among four singers. Irv Giddin is a retired public school music and band teacher. In addition to his duties with Amador Choraliers, he also plays bass and trumpet with the Amador Community Band. JR Keith hails from Texas where he sang in church choirs, led worship, and directed a middle school choir. He lent his voice to southern gospel quartets, jazz choirs, the Turtle Creek Chorale and Dallas Symphony chorus. He sings with the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus as well as the Amador Choraliers. Karen Reed, a retired public school teacher, church choir director for 25 years, church pianist and piano teacher, is also one of Choraliers’ accompanists. Darlene Williams has sung with the Choraliers since she was a teenager, and developed her keen director’s abilities “on the job”.

Dr. Jeffrey Nelson’s background includes a four-year tour of Europe with the US Army as vocalist, instrumentalist and choreographer with the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus based in Heidelberg, Germany. He studied and worked with Fred Sautter and James DePriest (Oregon Symphony) and Dr. Bruce Browne (Portland Symphonic Choir) while studying Brass Performance and Conducting at Portland State University. He has also studied with Anthony Plog (LA Philharmonic) and was a studio freelance trumpet and vocal artist in Los Angeles before moving with his wife Jen-nifer to northern California. He currently conducts the Cantare Chorale, Gold Rush Men’s Chorus and has been a guest conductor in Washington, D.C., Geneva, Switzerland, and Toronto, Canada with the VA National Medical Musical Group based in Washington, D.C. He also teaches private music instruction in trumpet, voice and guitar in Placerville, CA.

SacSings 2014 — Sacramento Choral Festival 13

Artists-in-residence at Sacramento’s Cathedral of the Blessed Sacra-ment, Capella Antiqua is dedicated to presenting choral music from all eras. The genesis of Capella Antiqua was need; a deep need to study and sing music of the highest artistic and historical significance, a need to sing fun music, and a need to share this with the wider com-munity. In the spring of 2011, a varied group of singers (undergrads to retirees), came together and committed themselves to a new musical endeavor whose watchwords were to be “fun” and “historically in-formed”. Capella Antiqua is the result. Its first two seasons presented a

diverse series of programs, from the Italian Renaissance, to the Philippine Baroque, to Romantic Era Germany. The group is all about singing great music, whether well known or not, with the highest level of artistry.

Capella Antiqua

The Davis Chorale is an auditioned choral en-semble of 30 to 40 singers from Davis and the sur-rounding areas. The Chorale was founded in 1978 as a community chorus to provide an opportunity for adults to sing oratorio, sacred, and secular works. Since then, the Chorale has performed in numerous special events, along with its regular performances in the fall, winter and spring under the direction of Founding Director Rachel Kessler and its assistant conductors. Artistic Director Alison Skinner assumed the baton in 2010. The Chorale has performed with other instrumental and vocal groups, such as the Ca-mellia Symphony, Sacramento Youth Symphony and the UC Davis Symphony and Chorus. The Davis Chorale performs many themed concerts in a variety of venues. The Chorale’s varied repertoire ranges from a cappella works from the Renaissance through orchestral works with chorus by modern composers. These can range from a requiem in the Da-

vis Community Church, to interfaith vespers services open to the community, to concerts with orchestra at the Sacramento Community Center.

The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir is a group of 45 men in the Sierra foothills who gather to make music in the spirit of the Cornish men who came to Grass Valley in the Gold Rush days to work in the mines. Today’s choir sings many types of music — Broadway, Americana, holi-day, and folk music — but they still keep traditional Cornish songs in their repertoire.

The miners founded a carol choir that was active in Grass Valley for over 90 years. It died out, but was re-formed in 1990 by Eleanor Kenitzer. The Male Voice Choir is an offshoot of that group. It is a beloved part of the Nevada County musical scene. The rich, deep sound of the Male Voice Choir is unique and thrilling. They have toured and sung in Cornwall, have participated in annual Cornish reunions in America, and have hosted a visiting Cornish choir. They also partner with area churches and nonprofits, and share their receipts with them as a way of strengthening their bonds

with the community. The small ensemble from the choir performing on Sunday will present a differ-ent program from the choir’s repertoire of popular and folk music.

The Renaissance Choir Sacramento was formed in the summer of 2011 to offer singers a medium for reading, rehearsing and performing sacred choral music from the 15th and 16th centuries — motets and masses by renowned composers such as Josquin, Palestrina, Dufay, and Byrd. The choir’s aim is to enjoy singing quality music well in a cheerful

but dedicated volunteer context. The high-lights of the choir’s 2013-14 repertoire are Palestrina’s Missa Iste Confessor and Hassler’s Missa Dixit Maria.

Renaissance Choir Sacramento

Choir founder and director Eleanor Kenitzer got the directing bug at 16 when she first got to direct a church choir, and was hired for her first choir directing job at 21. Forty-some years and many choirs later, her enthusiasm hasn’t diminished. Eleanor began the Male Voice Choir in 1997 after having re-formed a Cornish Carol Choir (SATB) in 1990. She says, “l fell in love with the male

voice choir sound on my first trip to Cornwall, and it still gives me goose bumps.” Assistant Director Darrell Crawford has had a career as a music teacher, conductor, and composer, and was Music

Supervisor for Modesto City Schools for 20 years. He has composed and arranged numerous pieces for the Male Voice Choir.

After earning a Ph.D. in music from the University at Buffalo, Lee Lovallo taught at California State College, Bakersfield where he founded the early music ensemble Principia Musica. In addition to serv-

ing as lead faculty for music at National University, Sacramento, Dr. Lovallo is active in the Western Early Keyboard As-sociation and owns a pipe organ design and maintenance business specializing in historical style organ building and service of tracker pipe organs. For four years Dr. Lovallo led the Orlando Gibbons Festival and Choir in Sacramento, has directed choristers and choirs at numerous churches affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music, and is presently the music director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Antelope. He was the director of the Jacques Buus Symposium in 2010, and during the summer of 2012 Dr. Lovallo was a participant in the Tallis Scholars summer program at Seattle University.

Reconciliation Singers Voices of Peace (RSVP)

Founded in 2000, RSVP’s mission is bringing people together through the arts and giving back to the community. RSVP ( Reconciliation Singers Voices of Peace) nurtures the commu-nity with its highly-praised, dynamic concerts while providing concrete, financial contributions that go on making a difference long after the applause. All members of RSVP donate their time so that all proceeds from concerts can go to local organizations in

need. RSVP is a 16-voice group of versatile, skilled singers, performing everything from classical cho-ral literature and madrigals to contemporary music, freedom songs, folk tunes, and jazz. Each cre-ative and artistic concert is tailor-made to suit the audience and the organization being supported.

The Sacramento Capitolaires Chorus and Quar-tets have been a proud Sacramento institution since 1946. Its tagline is “Where Singing Happens”! An apt description, since its members experience a multi-generation, multi-genre spectrum of Men’s Barber-shop-style a cappella ensemble singing (chorus, quartets, octets), music theory and voice improve-ment sessions, and, of course, a liberal dose of informal singing and social interaction. The group’s aim is to sing well, sing often, delight audiences and

members, and most of all, have fun!

Jennifer Reason, Interim Artistic Director of RSVP, is also a long-time singer with the group. Ms. Reason has extensive experience in the choral field and is also on staff with the Sacramento Children’s Chorus and the Centerpoint Community Choir, with whom she will be making her inter-national conducting debut in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. Previously she was a founding member

of the Sacramento-based vocal jazz ensemble C-Sus, which in 2006 was awarded the Downbeat Award for Best Col-legiate Vocal Jazz Ensemble in the US and Canada. In addition to her vocal endeavors, Ms. Reason is also a professional pianist and performanced across the US, Canada, and Europe. Her contemporary chamber ensemble Citywater is cur-rently Ensemble-in-Residence at California State University, Sacramento.

Ray first joined the Barbershop Harmony Society (aka SPEBSQSA) in 1949 in Park Ridge, Illinois. Following the completion of high school, three years in the US Marine Corps, marriage and college, he returned to Barbershop in the Simi Valley Chapter in 1963. In a few short years he started directing chapters, including Simi Valley, Oxnard, Conejo Valley, Sacramento and most recently 15 years with

Placerville. He served in the Contest & Judging Program for over 25 years as a Certified Judge in Sound and later in the Singing Category. He judged numerous Society contests, including at the International level, and taught in many So-ciety schools nationwide. He sang in a number of quartets, and is a several time Far Western District Senior and Super Senior Champion. Administratively, he served as the Far Western District VP for Music and Performance and as the Vice President for Young Men In Harmony. A Barbershop Harmony Society member for over 50 years, he has served as the Editor of Westunes, a Far Western District publication, since 2002. He is a Certified Chorus Director in the Barbershop Harmony Society, and is a member of the Far Western District Hall of Fame.
