CHEMICAL DATA, 1985IINTRODUCTION
This report is divided into two major sections. The firstsection consists of statistical summaries of chemical data brokendown by site identifier and analyte. Corresponding chemicallevel plots accompany the statistical summaries. The secondsection is a listing of the chemical data used in the statistics.The data is sorted by site identifier, analyte then sample date.
All data included in this report resulted from samples taken byRMA personnel during 1985. The samples were analyzed by the RMAlaboratory.

Chemical Level PlotsIThe statistical summaries of the North Boundary chemical data arebroken down by site identifier and analyte. The data codes andabbreviations are either listed below or included in theappendix.

ANALYTE is a code up to 6 characters long used to identifythe parameter being measured. Complete chemicaldescriptions of the compounds can be found in AppendixA.
N corresponds to the total number of readings taken for aparticular site and analyte combination.
n corresponds to the number of readings taken for aparticular site and analyte combination that are equalto or above the detection limit.

PROP > DL corresponds to the proportion of readingsequal to or greater than the detection limit (i.e.I n/N) .
NOTE: Interpreting statistics on measurements involving_deiEtion limits can be confusing. Readings falling belowthe detection limit have the effect of "truncating" anysymmetrical sampling distribution that would normally beexpected to occur when multiple quantitative readings aretaken.
If the lowest value detectable is considered to be of no"practical significance", the values falling below thedetection limit are sometimes treated as zero. Problemsoccur, however, when even the smallest trace of a compoundis considered significant. In this case, it would be wrongto consider readings falling below the detection limit equalto zero. It would also be wrong to set them equal to thedetection limit.
In this report, statistics were only computed on readingsexceeding or equal to the detection limit. The assumptionis being made that multiple readings taken from the samedomain would have been normally distributed if not for thetruncating effect of the detection limit. Referencing theproportion of readings exceeding or equal to the detectionlimit enables us to evaluate the ability of the statisticsto accurately estimate the population parameters (truevalues).
The examples below represent what could result ifmeasurements reported as being below detection limit weremade quantitative (i.e. given an actual value). Assume eachexample represents a distribution of 100 readings taken fromthe same domain. Multiple readings taken from the samedomain will have variation in measurement. In other words,the readings will not be the same even though they representthe same domain. This variation is due to error. Allmeasurements include error. The error relates to instrumentreliability, sampling variation, analyst differences injudgment and countless other factors. The error factor isusually random. In theory, the distribution resulting fromthe multiple measurements would be normal with half of themeasurements falling above and half below the mean(average).

I The means of the examples above were determined as follows:By definition, the mean of a normal distribution is equal tothe value above and below which half of the measurementsfall. The mean of the total distribution (XT) thereforecorresponds to a point located in the center of thedistribution. The mean of the restricted distribution (XR)was approximated by finding a point in the shaded area ofthe distribution that results in roughly half of the shadedarea being above and half below it.
I In examples A and B the means of total distributions (XT)are smaller than the means of the restricted distributions(XR). The total distribution corresponds to what isexpected if all measurements reported as being belowdetection limit were made quantitative. The shaded areacorresponds to the proportion of the measurements exceedingor equal to the detection limit. Statistics based on theseproportions (i.e. .50 and .01) over estimatethe "true" values. In example C the number of measurementsexceeding the detection limit is equal to the total numberof measurements taken (i.e. PROP > DL = 1.00). The means XTand XR are equal. In summary, the higher the PROP > DLvalue, the more accurate the statistics. It is recomme~ndedthat the mean, standard deviation and 99% confidenceinterval be used to estimate population parameters only whenthe PROP > DL exceeds .80.
DCNT LIMIT (Detection Limit) is the lowest measurement whichcan be determined using present methods and equipment.

MEAN is the arithmetic average of the values above or equalto the detection limit. If no values are equal to orabove the detection limit, the mean is coded as "LT DL"(i.e. the mean is less than the detection limit). Ifone value exists that is equal to or above the detectionlimit, the mean is equal to that value. With two ormore values the arithmetic average is taken. The meancan be interpreted as the best estimate of thepopulation mean (true value). This interpretation must,however, be correlated to information in the PROP > DLsection.
UOM (Units of Measurement) are expressed in micrograms perliter (UGL), milligrams per liter (MGL), parts perhundred (PPH) or micromhos per centimeter ofconductivity (UMHC). An "S" following UGL or MGLcorresponds to internal standard.
STANDARD DEVIATION is the unbiased standard deviation (i.e.N-1 in the denominator). The standard deviation can notbe computed if the sample size is less than 2. The code"ERR" will appear under this condition.
CONFIDENCE INTERVAL 99% was computed by using the unbiasedstandard deviation and the "t-value" corresponding tothe appropriate degrees of freedom. It cannot becomputed if the sample size is less than 2. Theconfidence interval is only computed on values fallingabove the detection limit. The reader must thereforeevaluate this statistic in reference to the PROP > DLsection.
NOTES ON CHEMICAL LEVEL PLOTS:
The "DL" intersected by the line located near the bottom ofthe plots corresponds to the detection limit. Readingsfalling below the detection limit are represented by boxesdrawn below this line. Multiple readings were taken eachmonth from the North Boundary System. The average(arithmetic mean) of the readings falling at or above thedetection limit is used to represent the avierage monthlyconcentration at a particular site. Please refer to the"PROP > DL" section for information on interpretation.
