Planets with their super natural powers move around in various planes and

control the overall existence as well as non-existence of all beings. Strictly in

accordance with their strength, they confer all Karmic effects, both good and

bad, to one and all. So, they are the ultimate executors of this entire creation.

Astrology is a science which reveals an individual’s environment, patterns of

behaviour, potentialities, propensities, fortunes, misfortunes, his vicissitude

of life, his past, present and future. In short, it is a blue print of his destiny.

The truth is that astrology is quite different from all other disciplines and it is

in a class by itself. This study will serve as a foundation for laymen, students

and enthusiasts alike who wish to further their understanding of this study,

which in ancient times had been considered “the king of sciences”. Astrology

is based on the relationship of all stellar bodies to the earth. It is primarily

concerned with all the bodies in our solar system including the planets, the

Sun, the Moon, asteroids and comets.

Among the greatest wonders of world, is the wonder of the Nadi Granthas in India

that reveal with stunning accuracy even the minute details of person’s life. Among

Nadi Granthas, Dhruva Nadi by Sage Satyacharya occupies a unique place. Based

on Dhruva Nadi, Sugar Peru Nadi and some principles from Budha Nadi, the

Meena System of Stellar Astrology or Nadi Jyothisa was developed by Late Sri R

Gopala Krishna Row (Meena 1) and Late Sri N V Raghava Chary (Meena 2) in

late thirties. Invaluable astrological principles, which were not found in the

classical astrological works, were given; upon which one can reliably proceed in

the delineation of a horoscope.

Generally in traditional astrology almost all the astrologers give importance to

planets and their positions in the zodiac. As per Nakshatra siddhantha or

stellar astrology, it is not the planets posited that going to deliver good or bad

results but their star lords i.e. the planets posited in particular star that star

lord is going to deliver the result to the native.

In timing of events, chaara (naksahatra pada) of planets plays an important

role in deciding the event. As per Meena, the ruling planet of a particular

period will not show its effects throughout its period, but there will be

variation, according to the pada of the constellation in which the ruling

planet 2is situated.

Jyotisha Sastra is prominent and primitive among all the sciences. It has been

developing from the beginning of the creation and is evergreen.

Authors of Nadi Jyothisha or Stellar System of Astrology, 1939

2 It is very important to state that Meena had introduced the Ruling Planet Theory in 1939 ( part I) and emphasised that ruling planets period only events of a particular bhava or planet will take place. Here the period what they had mentioned was Vimsothari dasa, bukthi period.

“Yada sikha mayuranam naganam manayo yada

Tadvat Vedanta sastranam Jyothisham moordhanisthitam”

Astrology is supreme among Vedic sciences like peacock’s tail and a gem on

the snake’s head. Beautiful peacock’s tail is compared with material affairs

and glorious rays of gem for knowledge.

One without eyes is a blind man. While objects, which are near at hand, can

be identified by touch, those at a distance can only be seen by the eyes. Just

as the human eyes are useful in identifying objects far and near, the

Jyothisha Sastra is useful in seeing the disposition of planets and stars in

time i.e., many years ago or hereafter in the future. Since mere touch cannot

identify colour, eyes are necessary to distinguish these. Likewise, even if a

planet is sighted today, we would not know its effects based on its location

and how it affects us. Jyothisha alone can throw light on the subject. That is

why it is called the eye of the Veda Purusha.

There are injunctions as to the time of performing Vedic rituals with reference to

planetary positions. The dates of marriage and other ceremonies are fixed

when the planetary positions are considered favourable. Jyothisha is also

known by the name of ‘Nayana’ meaning the eye. ‘Naya means to lead. A blind

person has to be led by someone. For those of us who are fortunate in having

eyes which can see, the eye performs the role of the ‘leader’. Having

determined the auspicious time for doing Vedic karmas, Jyothisha plays the

role of eye in leading us to their actual performance.

The constellations are based on the approximate number of days that the

Moon takes to complete a cycle relative to the stars. The Vimsothari dasa

predicts the moon's position through the lunar science in the Indian

Page 8: sadagopan of Nakshatras.pdf · on Dhruva Nadi, Sugar Peru Nadi and some principles from Budha Nadi, the Meena System of Stellar Astrology or Nadi Jyothisa was developed by Late Sri

tradition. This is also used to calculate Muhurtas, or auspicious time to begin

any job.

In Rigveda we find the present star position.

“Ameeya ruksha nihitasa uchcha naktam dahasya kuhu chiddi veyuhu,

Adabdani varunasya vratani vichakasaschandrama naktameti”

In this mantra it reveals that the stars throwing light during nights are

dismal or very less in the day light of the Sun.

“Vajanavathi suryasya yoshachitree magharaye eese vasoonam”

(Ruk.sa.7.7.5)

The Chitra & Makha naksatras are well explained in this mantra. In a mantra of

Yajurveda we find the 27 constellations which mean that our rishis’ and muni’s

were familiar with 27 constellations.

Every branch of knowledge arose in India as an extended application or an

extension of a philosophical system. Even the nakshatras which play a

prominent part in astrology have presiding deities. Let us take Anuradha

nakshatra, which is considered to be the best Nakshatra for any

auspicious functions and its deity is Mitra, a form of the Sun. As you

know that, the Hindu astrology did not treat the planets and naksatras

as mere material objects, but as a force charged with or radiating an

energy arising from a presiding deity. Purusha sukta (Rig veda10.90)

quotes of the Sun coming from the eye and of the Moon from the mind of the

cosmic creator the God. The Sun is said to be the eye of the Gods and to be

the animating soul (surya atma jagatastasthushas cha) of the moving and

unmoving Universe. Astrological principles thus are based on a spiritualistic

philosophy.

What Is Meant By The Term Nakshatra/Star / Constellations?

By the term “Star” is meant that which is fixed and unchangeable and also

motionless. There are myriads and myriads of these stars or jyotisa in the

heavens. Out of these, there are only about 300 stars which are useful to the

different globes or in other words have influence on them. All these countable

stars are grouped into 27 group stars from Aswini to Revati. The three stars

which resemble the face of a horse are called Aswini (Aswa-horse) and the

three others in the form of a triangle are called Bharani, and similarly other

groups, viz, Kritika, Rohini etc. First of all the Aswini group starts and to the

east of this is Bharani and to the east of this Kritika and so one. And in this

manner all the 27 stars-groups are formed into a circle commencing from the

east. This is called the Bha-Chakra or Zodiac. All these stars have occupied

Akasa or heavens.3

Vedic Astrology & Nakshatras

To understand and appreciate the depth and uniqueness of Vedic astrology

one must encounter and explore the nakshatras. Nakshatra literally means

“that which never decays.” The nakshatras reflect the primordial level of the

zodiacal belt, which lies beneath the twelve basic signs. In comparison to the

signs for rasis as they are named in India, the nakshatras reveal the deeper,

more profound effect of the constellations.

In the Vedic or Hindu system of astrology, the Nakshatras play a prominent

role in the art of prediction. In fact, the mysterious and ancient Nadi leaves

are based on the Nakshatras. Vedic astrology retains its root in a more

ancient lunar zodiac that reflects an earlier stage of human culture and

intuition. This Nakshatras system remains the pillar on which it is based and

serves to uphold its many insights and great predictive power. To understand

both the origins of the zodiac and our most primal connection to the heavens,

it is the dominant archetype.

Most of the ancient people believed that the soul travelled to the world of the

stars after death returning to the gods and ancestors from whom we arose.

The Vedic Nakshatras arose from such a spiritual perception of the cosmos.

The Nakshatras represent the abodes into which the fruits of our labour, our

karma, are transferred and stored. The Nakshatras are the mansions of the

Gods or cosmic powers and of the Rishis or sages.

The Vedas say:

Yo iha yajate, amum sa lokam nakshate

Tan nasktranam Nakshatratvam

One who offers worship here reaches world of heaven beyond.

That is the Nakshatrahood of the Nakshatras.

“Yovai nakshatriyam prajapatim veda, ubhayo revam lokayo

rviduhu,hasta evasya hastaha,Chitra sirah,nishtya hridayam,ooroo

vishakhe,pratishtha nuradhaha,eshavai nakshatriyam prajapatihi”4

The root “naksh” behind the term Nakshatra means to approach, worship, or

attain, while “tra” is a suffix suggesting instrumentality. The Nakshatras were

defined originally as means of connecting with the cosmic powers and

extending our human mind to the cosmic mind.

The Nakshatras dispense the fruits of karma, the highest of which is the fruit

of our worship and meditation, our spiritual labour in life. The Nakshatras

are of prime importance in muhurta or electional astrology for determining

favourable times for actions, particularly sacramental or sacred actions like

marriage. The term Nakshatra is commonly mentioned in the Rig Veda, the

oldest of the four Vedas or sacred texts of Hinduism. The names of several

Nakshatras occur in the Rig Veda, like Tishya (Pusahya), Aswini and Revati,

but not a complete listing of them.

Complete listings of the Nakshatras occur in the Yajur Veda (Taittiriya

Samhita IV.4.10) and in the Atharva Veda (XIX.7.2) places the ayana or

solstice in Makha (Regulus or early Leo) reflecting a date of before 2000 BCE

and also mentions the planets and Rahu(XIX.9.10). The Vedas state, “Our

ancestors fashioned heaven as a dark horse with pearls. They placed the

darkness in the night and the light in the day. Brihaspati(Jupiter) broke the

rock and released the rays”. Rig Veda X.68.11. Dawn is the head of the

sacrificial horse. Heaven is his eye. The year is his soul. His form is the

Nakshatras and the stars are his bones. Taittiriya Samhita of Yajur Veda

VII.5.25.

One could argue that without a real knowledge of the Nakshatras one cannot

be a real Vedic astrologer or really understand the system. Yet we should not

forget the spiritual origins and potential of the Nakshatras, as tools for

uniting with the stars that are the powers of the cosmic mind and the lords of

karma.

Each nakshatra has a particular power of shakti, the shakti is “the power of

the devatas or the deities ruling the lunar mansions.” Every nakshatra is

associated not only with particular deities, but also with a specific planet

which rules their asterism. It may fall completely within a particular sign or

overlap between two signs .Thus, it is also influenced by the sign or rasi

within which it resides.

Nakshathra Purusha: - the first three asterisms from the janma Nakshathra

constitute its face, the next four its eyes, the next four its neck, the next six

its hands, the next two its sides, the next eight its legs.5

ROLE OF NAKSHATRAS(Stellar)

In the original observations of the zodiac by the sages of yore were done by

way of the naksatras and not by the signs. The reason was simple. The Moon

was at a different segment of the zodiac every night. It returned to the same

segment after 27 days. This prompted them to divide the zodiac of 360 degree

in 27 equal parts of 13 degree 20 minutes each.

Each segment was given a name appropriate to its characteristics. Generally

we use naksatras for a) Calculation of starting point of the vimsothari dasa.

b) Matching of horoscopes for the purpose of marriage c) Finding the

Namanakshatra for naming ceremony d) Finding the appropriate Muhurtha

for a specific activity. e) As a basis for the mantra or primal sounds of the

soul used for naming children in India and for yogic practices as well.

Just as each sign has a distinct personality and every one has to understand

and arrive at the conclusion, so is the case with Nakshatras. In fact, the

personality of a Nakshatra is cloaked in so many different layers that it is

quite a task to unravel it completely. The wise and perceptive have often said

that for your predictions, you must look, and look intently, at the nature of

nakshatra.

In India, the Moon Nakshatra is the main indicator of personality types,

much like the Sun sign is in Western astrology. People don’t ask, “What is

your sign?” but, “What is your Nakshatra?” Nakshatra types, like Sun sign

types are clearly delineated according to their temperament, characteristics,

appearances, likes and dislikes. In fact Vedic astrology has much more detail

classifying Nakshatra types than Western astrology has with its Sun sign

types.

STELLAR(Nakshatra) EFFECTS-THE GUNAS IN PREDICTION –Important

tool for prediction.

In Srimad Bhagavath Geetha, we have a Chapter (Guna Thraya Vibhaga Yoga

Chapter 14 consisting of 27 slokas.) wherein it is expounded that the three

Gunas (Satwika, Rajasa and Taamasa) are emanated from the Prakruti. It

may be also construed that Gunas are linked with Prakruti. From the same

chapter, one will be able to note that Rajo Guna takes the nature of passions,

desires and attachments; Tamo Guna indicates carelessness, laziness and

drowsiness. On the other hand Satwik Guna is radiant, does not cause harm

or obstacles, gives happiness and comfort. Again in the Chapter Sradha Triya

Vibhaga Yoga (Chapter 17 containing 28 slokas) Sradha is of three kinds that

is Rajasa, Satwika and Taamasa. One finds that Satwika worship Devas,The

Rajasics worship Yakshas and Rakhshasas. The Taamasas worship inferior

deities like Vana Devathas and Bhutha Ganas.

Sriman Nigamaantha Desikan (A Srivishanavite Acharya) in his Sri Sthuthi

(verse No.7) has stated the words’ THRI GUNA PALAKAM NIRMITHA STHANA

BAYTHAM and verse taken as a whole in a broad sense can be taken to mean

that the Gunas play great part in the affairs, status etc., of all including the

various deities as well as Devathas and they owe their position and power

due to the Gunas.

PURPOSE OF HUMAN EXISTENCE

The purpose or goal of human existence is called as Purushartha. According

to the Vedas, there are four goals namely Dharma (righteousness) ,Artha

(wealth), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (permanent freedom from worldly

bondage). According to this philosophy, the first three goals are not an end by

themselves but need to be pursued with the ideal of attaining Moksha.

Moksha is a state where the Jeeva achieves one-ness with Brahman in terms

of all knowership and possessing qualities free from all worldly evils and

defects. The Jeeva however does not possess the power to create and destroy.

Neither does it have the power to grant Moksha.

ETHICS OF JEEVA

Souls and Matter are only the body of God. Creation is a real act of God. It is

the expansion of intelligence. Matter is fundamentally real and undergoes

real revelation. The Soul is a higher mode than Matter, because it is

conscious. It is also eternally real and eternally distinct. Final release, that

comes, by the Lord's Grace, after the death of the body is a Communion with

God. This philosophy believes in liberation through one's Karmas (actions) in

accordance with the Vedas, the Varna (class) system and the four Ashramas

(stages of life), along with intense devotion to Lord Vishnu. Individual Souls

retain their separate identities even after Moksha. They live in Fellowship

with God either serving Him or meditating on Him. The philosophy of this

school is Sri Vaishnavism, a branch of Vaishnavism.

VISHISHTADVAITA - JEEVA AND SAREERA-STELLAR ASTROLOGY

Vishishtadvaita

The Absolute Supreme Reality referred to as Brahman, is a Transcendent

Personality with infinite superlative qualities. He is Narayana, also known as

Lord Vishnu. Narayana is the Absolute God. The Soul and the Universe are

only parts of this Absolute and hence, Vishishtadvaita is pantheistic. The

www.sadagopan.org 43 www.srihayagrivan.org

Page 46: sadagopan of Nakshatras.pdf · on Dhruva Nadi, Sugar Peru Nadi and some principles from Budha Nadi, the Meena System of Stellar Astrology or Nadi Jyothisa was developed by Late Sri

relationship of God to the Soul and the Universe is like the relationship of the

Soul of Man to the body of Man. Individual souls is only parts of Brahman.

God, Soul and Universe together form an inseparable unity which is one and

has no second. This is the non-duality part. Matter and Souls in here in that

Ultimate Reality as attributes to a substance.

This is the qualification part of the non-duality. Vishishtadvaita philosophy

provided the philosophical basis for the establishment of Sri Vaishnavism

and gave Vedantic backing to the brimming devotion of the Alwar saints and

their composition of wonderful poetry and devotional songs in praise of Lord

Vishnu.

The impediments arise from sins committed by the individual souls by

transgressing the codes of conduct prescribed in the Sastras thus incurring

the displeasure of the Lord. This in turn impedes the progress of the Jeeva

towards Moksha. The sins are born out of Avidya (Ignorance), and

Karmavasana (the latent impressions of the past and the present deeds)-the

effects of which can be got rid of only by atoning and surrendering to the

Lord.

As for the impediments, they manifest in different ways:-

i) Committing sins deliberately to secure temporary and trivial mundane

benefits ii) Continuing to commit sins more and more- one sin leading to

another in an endless chain.

Through the Sastra, the individual soul discerns the differentiation as

between its self and the body on the one hand and as between its individual

soul (Jeevatma) and the Universal soul (Paramatma) on the other. He also

comes to know that his deeds (Karma) are responsible for his repeated

reincarnations (Punarjanmas). He therefore refrains from bad deeds (Papa)

www.sadagopan.org 44 www.srihayagrivan.org

Page 47: sadagopan of Nakshatras.pdf · on Dhruva Nadi, Sugar Peru Nadi and some principles from Budha Nadi, the Meena System of Stellar Astrology or Nadi Jyothisa was developed by Late Sri

and resorts to spiritually meritorious deeds (Punya) as prescribed in the

Sastras.

He also becomes aware of the Supreme Lord Sri Narayana and that surrender

(Prapatti) to him as the best means to reach Narayana and enjoy everlasting

bliss.

To the Jeeva who has attained Moksha everything will be pleasant, agreeable

and blissful. Even those that appeared painful or even less pleasurable while

on earth because of the constraining effects of the material world would now

appear enjoyable due to the absence of the material binding and the presence

of Bhagavan.

While comparing Jeeva and Sareera of Sri Vaishnavism, with that of Stellar

Astrology, in Sri Vaishnavism, the ultimately Jeeva to merge with universal

soul and body (Paramatma) to get Moksha or relief from the cycles of birth

and death, in Stellar astrology the Jeeva and Sareera(Planets identified by

using Nakshatras) of bhava/karaka should go inline with each other to give

best result to that bhava/karaka, so that the bhava/karaka gets satisfied

and also the native bestowed with very good results. Just like the Jeeva(by

performing good karmas) gets Moksha the ultimate in the life, in astrology the

bhava/karaka Jeeva and Sareera planets if they are benefic, friends and

associated with benefic houses bestows very good results to the native like

blissful Moksha. Working on this line I had worked out certain principles for

good result to flow to the native with the timing of events, as when the event

shall fructify by linking dasa, bukthi and anthara of the birth chart with that

of bhava/karaka Jeeva and Sareera planets.

Karma Sidhantha:

It is no wonder that the predictions are coming true to the satisfaction of

many, thus the subject is an eye opener to cynics who do not believe in

astrology and it is the time for them to ponder over the karma siddhantha

and the universal design of the God in dispensing the justice in the frame

work of the universal law “as you sow so shall you reap”, indicating the

relevance of Sanchitha karma in ones life which is akin to the fate. Like wise

it also emphasizes the prarabdha or the actions rendered by the will power

during the current life which indicate the free will that operates in a given

time depending on the one’s inclination to choose the will power.

Thus life is not to be a discovery of what probability you are but it is to create

what potential you are “yat bhavam tath bhavathi” i.e. “thoughts are things”.

It is highly essential that one must readily accept to burn the past karmas

and to render all good deeds in the current life which will leave a balance

sheet of the fate and forms the seed known as agaami for the future birth.

Hence, purpose of astrology has risen beyond the limited purpose of

electional, mundane, natal astrology for mere predicting of events to that of

self realization, and self enlightment adopting the values of universal love and

universal service.

Therefore, the astrology found a rightful place in vedanga indicating its

relevance of the Vedanta that the merger of the individual self with that of

universal self is possible by an insight, the basic reason that the Indian

philosophy is not a mere doctrine or a dogma but it is a way of life.
