The statuettes used in represent- ing mother goddesses are referred to as Fertility idols. Fertility idols were one of the first representation of the human form, perhaps the first sculpture of the ancient world, dating as far back as the Upper Paleolithic period a la the Venus of Willendorf. They were made with various materials such as bronze, silver, limestone and more commonly, terracotta. They were usually represented in abstracted female forms with exagerrated features. Emphasis were usually placed on their breasts, stomach and genital areas. Fertility Idols can be found in various ancient cultures.
