Safa British School Newsletter 26TH October 2017

This week in FS1 we have started our new story “Where is my Teddy?” We have been acting the

story out with our friends inside the class with masks and puppets. We have also been creating our

own teddy bear pictures using porridge and forks to make new textures and effects.

We had an amazing time at our teddy bears picnic socialising with the other FS1 classes and sharing

our teddies with our friends.

Next week is a holiday so we hope you all have lots of fun, and we cannot wait to hear about all of

your adventures when you return.

When we come back we will be moving on to our new topic “How Many Colours in a Rainbow?”

Lastly, a big congratulations to our Safa Stars in FS1 last week: Muhammad Rayyan Riyaz, Caline

This week

We have been very busy this week with lots of fantastic learning. During our literacy lessons, the

children have been introduced to characters from the Oxford Reading Tree books. We met Chip, Biff,

Kipper, Mum, Dad and Floppy and have spent the week seeing these characters in books. You will

meet these characters through the children’s home readers in the coming weeks.

FS2 have also been looking at the people who help us both at home and in the community. We

thought about the roles of different people such as Firefighters, Police Officers, Ambulance Drivers

and Nurses. The children also thought about who helps them at home – our mums, dads, nannies and

grandparents.

In our maths learning, we have been practicing our counting and number formation. We listened to

number formation songs and wrote the numbers in lots of messy ways such as shaving foam, flour

and glitter. The children also practised matching an amount of objects to a given number. Maybe you

can practise that at home over the holidays.

Next term, our topic will be “Why do zebras have stripes?” We will learn all about different African

animals and also look at the lives of people in African countries such as Kenya. For our first day back

to school, we would love to have a WOW day where the children dress up as their favourite animal.

This could be a lion, zebra, giraffe or anything of their choosing. We don’t need expensive outfits, just

something that will make the day memorable. We look forward to seeing a big bunch of animals on

November 5th. Have a lovely half term break.

In Mathematics, we solved problems by creating tables and simplifying clues. Then, we continued on

mental subtraction; subtracting 2-digit numbers and 3-digit numbers using partitioning. For the rest of

the week, we introduced expanded column subtraction and the formal written method for subtraction

to then combine addition and subtraction problems by the end.

Last week

Last week we used the melodies the children had composed to put over the appropriate backing track

in the style each year group have been working on. The classes mainly used glockenspiels,

xylophones and keyboards. Some untuned percussion was used and the children followed musical

notation really well – crotchets, quavers, minims, semibreves and 1 beat rests. KS1 worked hard

trying to incorporate the ‘animal’ rhythms when playing the untuned percussion instruments.

This week

The classes have been composing pieces of music in the style they have been working on using

photographs and pictures as inspiration. The children have been thinking about using a suitable

structure (beginning, middle and end), layering sounds and dynamics and choosing appropriate

instruments. These have been recorded for the children to appraise and comment on.
