Karibu!

A dream is about to become true. . . experience Africa with its abundance of wildlife, beauty, tranquillity and endless clear, summer days.Join us on an epic trip through five African countries (Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe); swim, snorkel or scuba in the three Great Lakes of Africa; visit the chimpanzees of Jane Goodall; swing on catwalk bridges over the Victoria Falls; descent into the Ngorongoro Crater after leaving the picturesque Lake Natron with Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano; sleep under African skies in multiple game parks including Serengeti, the most photographed and filmed game park in Africa with and incredibly dense population of wildlife and never-ending rolling plains of grasslands and golden savannah. Serengeti is also the place of the fascinating and dramatic Great Wildebeest Migration. Every year, over 1,5 million white-bearded wildebeest and 250 000 zebras migrate from one side of the park to another in search of fresh grazing. The trek is a true site to behold as many predators snatch up prey along the way; a spectacle of predator versus prey.

This is indeed the best and most exciting adventure in all of Africa,

a photographer's paradise!

DAY 1And it all starts at Elephant Sands Botswana...Hit the road from South Africa early on Friday, of course you have been dreaming, preparing and packing weeks in advance for this huge Africa Big Lake Safari. There is no better place than Elephant Sands to have our bush gala première. Enjoy drinks while awaiting a scrumptious lodge dinner around the fire-place while elephants play at the waterhole a few steps away. After the dinner party we all retire to our luxury en-suite tents around the water hole, each with a unique view of the water hole and numerous elephant paths passing by.

Cannot wait for tomorrow...

DAY 2Breakfast and off to the Zambezi Waterfront, Zambia... Possible sunrise and elephant photos early morning. A good bush breakfast puts us on the road to the Kazungula Ferry which will take us across the Chobe River to Zambia, an excellent spot to have our on the road picnic.A short trip takes us to the Zambezi Waterfront on the Zambezi River, a stone throw away from Livingstone and the Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) in Zambia. From here, stunning views of the river and the spray of the Victoria Falls provides stunning photographic opportunities. A raised wooden deck stretches out over the river with a unique plunge pool, the perfect place to have a sundowner from the open bar while Christine is brewing up an oxtail potjie. A good kuier, preparation of cameras and off to bed in quaint double bed tents.

DAY 3Today isVictoria Falls dayZambia...After a good breakfast spread we head off to Victoria Falls. You may wonder if there is a big difference between the Zambian or Zimbabwean side of the Victoria Falls, i.e. the towns of Livingstone vs Victoria Falls? Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. Although the Zimbabwean side has more viewing points, the Zambian side has amazing catwalk bridges suspended high across the gorge. Every step allows for spectacular bird’s eye view photography. Imagine a picnic lunch at one of the many vistas!Back at the waterfront one can take a dip in the pool, enjoy a cocktail on the deck overlooking the mighty Zambezi River or book a sundowner boat cruise on the river.

Meanwhile the fire will burn high at the ‘Adventure Tented Island’ for the evening’s braai. After a dinner under the stars and lots of talk about the day’s activities we will shut eye in the prepared adventure tents.

Cannot wait for tomorrow...

A quick breakfast and off to Serengeti with a hit and run stop at a local market for some shopping, also interesting photo opportunities when crossing a small piece of Lake Victoria with the Kigongo/Busisi ferry. This route will take us along the South Eastern shores of Lake Victoria to enter the western side of the Serengeti. At this time of the year this will be the area where millions of wildebeest and zebra take on their northern migration route. With some luck we might see the famous ‘Gameti river crossing’ where big crocks have their lunch. We pitch camp at Dik Dik camp site, perhaps the most central camp in the Serengeti.A good piece of meat and baked potato on the fire will seal this iconic day.

The Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, what more needs to be said... Up early and arrange a minimum of cars to enter the crater, the cars that can seat at least 4 people. With cameras in rapid fire mode we descent into the Ngorongoro Crater: one of the most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites in the world. It is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and home to the highest density of big game in Africa. Ngorongoro is justifiably one of the continent's most famous safari destinations.Back at camp we re-arrange cars and have a grand buffet dinner at Doffa Safari Lodge. Prepare for an early getaway for a rather long push on the road the next day.

What a day this was...

A picnic on the border and an easy road to Maji Zuwa Resort on Lake Malawi follows. On arrival: we book into our chalets, grab our snorkeling equipment and swim along the shallow and crystal clear shoreline, lounge in one of the many hammocks as the staff serves us drinks with the light African breeze keeping the temperature just perfect. As the sun begins to set and dinner is prepared, we gorge ourselves on the best pan crusted tilapia caught that morning by local fishermen.A good night’s rest will evolve into a lazy morning tomorrow.

DAY 18Another day in paradise and time is on our side...A slow get up, a coffee, and stroll to the water. Slowly glide out with snorkel and fins and notice the brilliance of colour set beside the submerged rocks of the Great African Rift Valley in which we are immersed. This is the Africa where a clock is not driving us and a planner is not needed for the day. This is where we won't have service on your iphone and where time slows down so that you may enjoy simply being. A scuba dive activity is also not out of the question. After an omelet from the kitchen and perhaps even an early beer we get ready for our trip to the next beach lodge only 2 hours away. After a picnic lunch we will arrive at Butterfly Space - An almost carbon copy of yesterday’s arrival at Maji Zuwa Resort plays itself out with the added bar on the beach, eina!

Ÿ Should you have an inflatable mattress do have a puncture kit or back-up mattress - we prefer stretcher with foam mattress.

Ÿ Mosquito net, a good netting on tent should also be good enough .

Ÿ Insect spray.Ÿ See packing list.

RecreationalŸ If you can float, snorkel equipment is

a must: fins, mask and snorkel.Ÿ Scuba gear for lake Tanganyika and

filled cylinder, at Lake Malawi we stay at a dive-centre and all equipment can be rented.

Ÿ To rent dive and snorkel equipment for trip contact Tom Tom van Staden (Atlantis Scuba Academy) 012 546 6703.

Ÿ A fishing rod and lures for those wishing to fish at the Great Lakes.

Ÿ Binoculars and your favourite bird-book and check list - this is a bird watcher/ornithologist dream trip.

Ÿ Playing cards, chess and other board games you might like playing in the lazy hours on the Great Lakes.

Ÿ As a cyclist I however do not think there will be much opportunity and therefore do not suggest to take a bike along.

Ÿ Walking stick for hikes, especially when tracking the chimpanzees in Gobe NP.

Ÿ Good hiking boots.Ÿ See packing list

What to takePhotographyŸ All your equipment but do not duplicate.Ÿ Lenses: from super wide to a good telephoto and

macro could all be useful.Ÿ Tripod and remote triggers a must for night

photography.Ÿ Camera and backup with enough batteries and

perhaps a charger that could work in the car.Ÿ Filters: polarisers, big stoppers or ND filters and

gradual for the serious landscape photographers.Ÿ Memory cards, card reader and external drive to

download.Ÿ A laptop can be shared for downloading.Ÿ Laptop if you wish to edit during free time.Ÿ Gadget bag as well as small hikers gadget bag

Ÿ Dedicated flash especially for fill-in with late afternoon and wildlife forest photography.

Ÿ Underwater photography: Housing for camera for underwater photography, small aquatic camera or plastic sock (Sea and Sea) useful for underwater photography when snorkeling. We have dive instructors and master diver to guide with underwater photography on the expedition.
