Mirror or farm architectureWhen installed, SafeKit offers two generic application modules:

• either a mirror module to build a primary/ secondary architecture between two servers with synchronous real-time file replication and failover (a 3-nodes replication is also available).

• or a farm module to build a network load balancing and failover architecture between N servers.

Simple and effective application integrationThe configuration of a module is done through a few simple tasks:

• define the IP addresses of the servers and the load balancing rules

• select the directories of files to replicate

• determine which services to restart in case of failure.

Without additional integration efforts, you can create several modules for several applications and imagine any type of combination.

Integrated and optimized administrationSafeKit provides a centralized administration web console. An administrator can remotely monitor the status of applications on different clusters and act with simple buttons (start, stop).

The documentation provides tests to validate the proper behavior of the application in high availability mode and includes troubleshooting procedures.

Using a generic command line interface, critical applications protected by SafeKit fit easily into specific monitoring consoles (Patrol, Nagios…).

A solution tailored for Cloud environmentsApplication high availability with SafeKit can be deployed either in virtual machines or on physical servers: the configuration does not change. SafeKit also offers replication and failover of full virtual machines between two Hyper-V physical servers. The solution is simple and economical as it requires no shared disk and works with the free edition of Hyper-V.

Software vs hardware clusteringYou have two choices when building a server cluster: either a software clustering like SafeKit or a hardware clustering. SafeKit is much more simple to implement.

Shared nothing vs shared disk clusterSafeKit is a shared nothing cluster and not a shared disk cluster. There is no shared disk to configure and the servers can be easily put in remote computer rooms without replicated disk bays on a SAN.

Byte-level file replication vs block-level disk replicationWith byte-level file replication, compared to block-level disk replication, you just have to define the directories of files that you want to replicate in real-time. SafeKit is a file-based replication solution. There is no special disk to configure that has to be entirely replicated.

Synchronous replication vs asynchronous replicationIf you choose SafeKit and its synchronous replication, any data committed on a disk by a transactional application is replicated on the secondary machine. Be careful, usually file replication solutions are asynchronous and lose data on failure.

Network load balancing with no network prerequisiteSafeKit does not require special servers for load balancing like Linux LVS. It does not require special network configuration like Microsoft NLB and its multicast or unicast MAC address.
