Safer Health Care Now! Initiatives: Central Line Infection and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

The Safer Healthcare Now! Interventions are cross-Canada patient safety initiatives. All are based on those originally developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) for its 5 Million Lives Campaign in the U.S. They are designed to engage teams and clinicians in a dynamic approach to quality improvement and provide a solid foundation for achieving results.Central Line Infection: The aim of this initiative is to prevent central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-BSI) and deaths from CR-BSI by implementing a set of evidence-based practices for insertion and line maintenance in patients requiring a central line on the Oncology Unit. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP): The intervention is intended to prevent VAP and deaths from VAP and other complications in patients on ventilators by implementing a set of interventions known as the "VAP bundle."

SSI – Prevention of Surgical Site Infection (SSI): Prevent surgical site infection (SSI) and deaths from SSI by implementing a set of evidence-based interventions in all surgical patients.
