The EU and safety and health at work

In line with the Treaty, the EU defines at European level the minimum requirements in the field of health and safety at work.

The European Commission is constantly monitoring developments and presents legislative proposals to the Council and the European Parliament with a view to addressing new risks or to adapt the EU legislative framework to the state of art and changes in the workplace.

Commissioner Mr László Andor is the Member of the European Commission responsible for employment, social affairs and inclusion.  This includes EU policies among others in the areas of•Employment •Labour law •Health and safety at work

Dr Jukka Takala is the Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

Every three-and-a-half minutes someone in the EU-27 dies of work-related causes. 167 000 in a year

10 –> 15 % of all fatal accidents at work and 15 –> 20 % of all accidents, are connected with maintenance.

Council Directive 89/391 – the "Framework Directive“
