At skin contact: to take off all contaminated clothing, to wash
immediately contaminated skin with water.
Contaminated clothing should be washed before using it for
the second time.
At eye contact: to flush eyes with water carefully during
several minutes.

4. First aid measures.
4.1.Observed symptoms:
4.1.1.Poisoning by inhalation: Coughing, constriction, rhinitis, lacrimation /2/
4.1.2.Skin contact: At skin contact- burn injury with necrosis phenomena,
spreading deep into tissues , non-healing wounds leading to
cicatrization /2/.
4.1.3.At eye contact: Smarting in eyes and burning sensation, lacrimation, strong
edema and conjunctivitis of eyes, corneal opacity, damage of
iris. In case of eye contact with solution or solid caustic soda
it results in chemical burn with possible blindness /2/.
4.1.4.Poisoning by inhalation: Burning of lips, mucous membranes of oral cavity, gullet,
stomach, salivation, sickness and vomiting often with blood,
pains in the mouth, in tract of breast-bone and abdominal
zone, pain at swallowing, effect of collapse /2/.

4.2.First aid measures for suffered people.
4.2.1.Intoxication by inhalation: Fresh air, rest, warmth , clean clothes.
To drip vegetable oil in the nose /3/.
Call for medical attention /2/
4.2.2.In case of skin contact: Wash the skin thoroughly with running water for 10 minutes,
lotion with 5% solution of acetic, hydrochloric or citric acid
/3/.
4.2.3.In case of eye contact: Immediately wash the eyes thoroughly with running water or
physiological solution for 10-30 minutes.
Get medical attention immediately /2/.
4.2.4.In case of intoxication by
ingestion: Plentiful water drinking or 1 – 2% solution of acetic,
tartaric, lactic or citric acid, diluted lemon juice or vinegar (2
tablespoonful per glass of water) or «egg-milk». Don’t

4.2.5.Contra indications: Do not induce vomiting! /2/.
4.2.6.First aid means: First aid kit: 5% solution of acetic, citric or lactic cid, milk,

6.1.2.Personal protective equipment
(of emergency brigades and personnel): For emergency brigades- self-contained protective suit
KIKH-5 completed with self-contained breathing apparatus
IP-4M is used. In case the above protective equipment is not
available, battledress overgarment L-1 or L-2 are used,
completed with industrial gasmask with filter box B, gloves
from dispersal butyl rubber, special footwear. /9/.
6.2. Actions to be taken on removal of accidental and emergency situations.
6.2.1. Measures in case of spillage:
(including environmental safety
measures): Inform the regional agencies of Rospotrebnadzor.
Do not touch the spillages, place of spillage should be
protected by earthworks (dyking) and the product should be
collected into dry corrosion-proof containers and tightly
closed. Avoid drainage into reservoirs, subbasements,
sewerage system. Spoilt product together with topsoil should
be collected into special containers and sent for disposal to
the places agreed with the local sanitary services. Place of
spillage should be washed with plenty of water. Protect with
earthworks, avoid drainage into surface waters. The flush
water should be collected into special containers and sent for
neutralization to the places agreed with local services of
Sanepidnadzor (Public Health Authority). Washed surfaces
of vehicles and territory should be treated by weak solution
of acid /9/.
6.2.2.Fire-fighting actions: Product is non-combustible. Packaging may be involved into
burning. Use fire-fighting means at the main place of
ignition.
7.Rules for storage and handling of chemical product for cargo operations.
7.1.Safety measures for handling chemical production.
7.1.1.Safety measures and collective
means of protection: (incl. System of
fire and explosive safety measures): Plenum-exhaust and local ventilation for the working area,
storehouses and laboratories.
Sealing of the equipment and pipelines.
Wall charts with safety signal signs are to be placed in the
working area.
Regular control of product aerosol MACw.z. in the air of
working area.
Workplace is to be equipped with primary fire-extinguishing
means (sand, fire-suppression cylinder etc.). /1/.

7.1.3.Recommendations for safe
relocation and transportation: Caustic soda technical granulated is transported by railway,
road and water transport in palletized form in conformity
with the rules of carriage for hazardous cargoes effective for
this means of transport. It is transported by railway in
covered wagons /1/.
7.2.Rules for handling chemical production.
7.2.1.Conditions and terms of safe
storage (guarantee shelf life): Caustic soda technical granulated should be stored in covered
storehouses excluding ingress of moisture. At storage in
heated storehouses the bags and transportation packages with
caustic soda technical granulated should be placed at a
distance not less than 1 meter form the heaters /1/.
Guarantee shelf life is 1 year from the date of manufacturing /1/.
7.2.2.Substances and materials
incompatible at storage: Water, acids, organic substances /2/.
7.2.3.Materials recommended
for tare and packing: Caustic soda with weight less than 50 kg is packed into
hermetic valve polyethylene, polypropylene with valve and
polyethylene insert, polypropylene laminated or some other
bags according to operating regulatory documentation (5H3,

containers specialized for bulk solids made of polypropylene

11.1.General characteristics of
exposure (hazard evaluation, toxicity,
effects upon organism): Caustic soda technical granulated is a highly hazardous
substance, which has full-blown injurious effect on skin and
mucous membranes of eyes. When getting on cutaneous
covering it causes chemical burn dissolving albumins into
albumites. While long-term exposure upon cutaneous
covering may cause ulcers and eczemas /3,4/
Has strong effect on mucous membranes, may cause damage
of upper respiratory system and lungs. Even the most minor
amount of caustic soda is hazardous when gets into eyes.
