Vehicle Maintenance Best Practices

Maintaining your vehicle contributes to beginning and ending every trip safely. Repairs are expen-

sive and that expense grows higher when repairs have to be completed on the road. A good

maintenance plan can catch small problems before they become huge expenses on the road.

It’s a good idea to develop a consistent procedure to check your equipment. Starting from the

driver’s side, work along the side of the tractor and trailer around to the back of the trailer and

then along the passenger’s side of the trailer and truck, finishing at the front of the truck. Whatever

pattern you choose, it will help you to be consistent and focus on each part of the truck and trailer

to be inspected. Listed below are items you should inspect:

From the Compliance Department

FMCSR 391.51(b)(7)(ii)

Be aware that DMVs are instructing operators that an updated medi-

cal certification (med cert) is not immediately required and that they

can wait until the expiration of their previous med cert. That infor-

mation is contradictory to FEDERAL LAW which states the med cert

must be taken immediately to the DMV so the carrier can run the

MVR with the information displayed within 10 – 15 days of the medical

certification issue date.

For further details, please go to landstaronline, click on Compliance &

Hazmat select Operator Compliance and go to “News Flash for all

Expect the Unexpected…

CMV drivers know that summertime activities can also mean a variety of hazards.

Pay close attention to your surroundings and drive defensively.

Help protect your freight and yourself through proper planning. Follow these simple steps:

Become aware of high-theft areas.

Drive a minimum of 4 hours or 150 miles from a high-risk shipper site before stopping.

When you do stop for fuel or rest, pay attention to the other vehicles and people in the

area.

Report suspicious vehicles to law enforcement agencies.

Park in well-lit areas and back your trailer against a fence, door or wall.

Seal the load and document the seal number on the bill of lading, then have the shipper

sign at origin.

Use kingpin and trailer locks to protect your equipment and an air-cuff lock applied to

your air valves. (Make your truck harder to steal than the ones parked next to you.)

Make the required check calls via Interactive Voice Response (IVR) at 800-972-9490 and follow the

prompts. Go to landstaronline for the complete list of Landstar’s Cargo Security & Loss Prevention

procedures and the latest cargo theft reports & alerts
