The importance of these sites to the maintenance of the world’s bird populations is recognized internationally through their designation as Important Bird Areas (IBAs). The Sagemace & Coleman Bay Islands contain a diversity of habitats including shallow alkaline lakes and cattail marshes. Long Island is a very low-lying, grassy island, that is partly rocky and is surrounded by marshes. Deciduous and coniferous forests border Lake Winnipegosis while large expanses of freshwater marsh occur along the lake.
