Welcome to the 2010 South Africa International Business Linkages (SAIBL) Catalogue, highlighting a selection of the dynamic, empowered businesses contributing to the success and transformation of the South African economy. The SAIBL program builds the competitiveness of black enterprises through improvements in management, productivity, quality, and the use of modern technology, and links them to domestic and international markets.

In the pages that follow you will find successful businesses that not only provide unique, high quality, and authentically South African products, but who are also contributing to job growth and innovation in historically disadvantaged South African communities.

Whether you are a professional in the Wine, Gift-ware, or Specialty Food industries, or merely a connoisseur of South African culture, there is something in these pages for you.

Please contact the businesses directly for more information on any of the products featured in this catalogue, or alternatively, you may contact SAIBL’s office in Washington D.C. at [email protected].

The SAIBL program would also like to acknowledge the generous support of the American People through the United States Agency for International Development in the development of this catalogue.

Best Wishes,Tim Bergstrom

Welcome!

“Stellar. Organic. Fairtrade.Working with nature.Changing lives. “

Page 5: SAIBL E-Catalogue 2010

is South Africa’s largest producer of organic Fair Trade Certified™ wine. Close to 2 million bottles per annum are made for the local market and export destinations in Europe, the United Kingdom, USA, Canada and Asia.

Situated in the semi-arid Namaqualand hamlet of Trawal, the cellar processes grapes from company-owned farms as well as independent organic producers in the Olifants River Valley.

Well-known for its innovative approach, Stellar has achieved a number of “firsts” in the wine industry. It was the first organic winemaking operation in the world to gain the coveted Fair Trade certification and the first cellar in Africa to produce commercially viable no-sulphur-added wines.

The organic vineyards and winemaking process are certified by Control Union Certifications, based in the Netherlands.

The wines reflect their place of origin. The style is crisp, fruity whites from the cooler vineyards close to the Atlantic coast and brilliantly-coloured reds full of berry flavours, made to be enjoyed young. Our specialist no-added-sulphur range is one of Stellar’s most sought-after products.

What is organic wine?

Stellar Winery

O rganic wine is the common name given to wine produced from organically-grown grapes. Under EU regulations, wine made from organically-grown grapes is

permitted to contain a certain level of sulphur dioxide preservative, less that 50% that of the maximum allowed for conventional wines.

In addition to wine made from organically-grown grapes, Stellar also produces a range of organic wines made without the addition of sulphur dioxide - one of the few wineries in the world to do so. In fact, the cellar is the world leader in the production of these wines.

Page 6: SAIBL E-Catalogue 2010

T he Stellar Farm achieved Fair Trade certification in in 2003, followed by the cellar in 2004. Since then, the Stellar

workers have gained a significant shareholding in the business (26% in the winery and 50% in Stellar Agri, a wine- and table-grape farm). Projects designed to improve access to educational opportunities, health and nutrition and sport and recreation have been initiated.

The projects are managed by the Joint Body of the Stellar Empowerment Trust and include an educational and training facility, laptop computers, an organic vegetable garden and a soccer field and netball court. Stellar also makes a significant contribution to community facilities as part of its social responsibility programme.

As the demand for Stellar’s Fair Trade Certified products has increased, Fair Trade has spread to more farms in the area that supply the cellar with grapes, bringing the benefits of the programme to the wider community.

Fair Trade Certified ™

Awards

Our wines have won numerous awards over the years in both

national and international competitions, proving that organic Fair Trade wines can more than measure up to their conventional counterparts in quality. The latest and most prestigious award is the International Wine Challenge Fairtrade Award won by Heaven on Earth for best Fair Trade wine.

Page 7: SAIBL E-Catalogue 2010

The sparsely populated Namaqualand does not suffer the light pollution that plagues urban areas around the world. The dark nights and clean air result in a breathtaking

cosmic display with the aptly-named Milky Way at its centre. The clear nights are also cooler and help bring down the average summer temperature. We pay homage to this phenomenon with the Stellar Range.

The wines are assembled from different farms, ferments and yeasts. Each wine in the blend starts with deep colour and ripe fruit and tannins. Individual nuances arise from organic agriculture, saline irrigation water, cooling afternoon winds, wild ferments and other still-to-be-discovered influences. Lightly wooded for structure rather than flavour, these wines offer a tasting experience that will provide a convincing argument for the ascendancy of organic over conventional wines.

Now and then a wine is required that doesn’t need a ritual on opening, whose departure from a collection is not accompanied by nostalgic memories of its

purchase. A wine that doesn’t need glasses you don’t have. Sometimes one wants a wine to be a song heard a thousand times, something to hum to, tap to, work with. A wine that’s finished before you get to know it, a wine you begin to miss only when it’s gone. A wine that realises there are other things in life, a lot of other things. (Wine geeks may read the fine print)

The “Live-a-Little” range was created to be that wine. Made from our more generously yielding vineyards, the grapes are given the same care in the cold rooms and the crusher as our more serious offerings. Yeasts specially selected for this style are used. Ferment temperatures are kept in check and pump-overs done less vigorously. Earlier pressing, racking and filtering have retained the vibrant colour and fruit, and have resulted in entry-level wines that will surprise and revive you.

Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz*, Merlot*, Pinotage* and Cabernet Sauvignon*, Shiraz Rosé*, SparklingAll of these wines go into the USA without added sulphites.

Wildly Wicked White, Slightly Sweet and Shameless, Rather Revealing Rosé, Really Ravishing Red. All of these wines go into the USA without added sulphites.

Our area of the Western Cape is the only area in the world where Rooibos (red bush), known since the time of the San for its medicinal properties, can

be cultivated. Fully sun-ripened Muscat d’Alexandrie grapes partially dried on a bed of organic straw and Rooibos and rehydrated in their own juice has produced a dessert wine redolent of the flavours and scents of apricot and Rooibos. Heaven On Earth is a superb example of a specialist regional product.

The newcomer to the Stellar stable is Grace communal wine, a sweet red which has the distinction of being the first Organic Fair Trade communal wine

available to the faith-based community.

Stellar specializes in customised parallel branding to suit the specific needs of our clients and their markets. These are a selection:

Stellar Wines can be purchased in over 30 U.S. states, and in countries all over Europe, Africa, and Asia.

One WOrld Wines pay tribute to the heritage of the Koopmanskloof’s community and the precious land it

inhabits. Fair Trade certified, One World wines draw their distinct, delicious flavors from the rich soils of the lands and are a testament to the hard-working spirit and commitment to excellence of the Koopmanskloof community. KOOpmansKlOOf, Dutch for “Trader’s Ravine,” defines the profession and location of the native community who embraced fair trade with the first European ships to visit South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope during the 16th century. Today, this multicultural community still upholds its reputation as a fair, friendly trader with its distinction as the largest Fair Trade Certified wine producer in South Africa’s Stellenbosch region. It is also a proud member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), an independent conservation body that aims to protect the natural habitat of the Cape Floral Kingdom in the winelands.

One WOrld’s multicultural community of producers speaks to its commitment to economic empowerment. Black Africans own

less than 1% of South Africa’s multi-billion dollar annual industry—an imbalance that Koopmanskloof is looking to change. “Our workers own their own farm, and own 25% of the operational company,” says Rydal Jeftha, Koopmanskloof’s CEO.

One World contributes a portion of sales to a worker’s trust, which worker-owners can use to improve their homes and send their children to school. “My philosophy is, if you don’t add value in the same measure to the lives of the people who add the value to your business, it is a futile exercise,” Jeftha says.

On e World wines are Fair Trade certified, signifying

Koopmanskloof’s commitment to the well-being of our workers. The Fair Trade Certified Mark appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. The Fair Trade Certified Mark is the North American equivalent of the International Fairtrade Certification Mark used in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

For a product to carry either Certification Marks, it must come from FLO-CERT inspected and certified producer organizations. The crops must be grown and harvested in accordance with the International Fairtrade standards set by FLO International. The supply chain is also monitored by FLO-CERT to ensure the integrity of labeled products. Only Fair Trade USA can use the Fair Trade Certified Mark on their products.
