Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City, a dynamic place that is constantly changing. This welcome guide is meant to provide you with some basic information to help navigate those first few weeks and months and hopefully answer the question Where can I find? This guide is by no means exhaustive, but rather a starting point for you to get to know your new home. As you explore the city you will be able to add your own favourites to this list.

WELCOME!

HO CHI MINH CITYThe former capital of South Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. It is difficult to state the current population; conservative estimates put it at roughly 7 - 8 million, while some state the population is likely closer to 10 - 11 million.

The city is divided into many districts. The majority are numbered (1 - 12), while others are named (i.e. Tan Binh). In Vietnamese, the word district is quan (pronounced wun). You will often see district abbreviated as Q for Vietnamese or D for English. District 1 is largely considered the city center, and where you will find many shops, department stores, offices, consulates, restaurants, and cafes. District 3 borders District 1 and is quickly becoming part of the city center. District 2, also known as An Phu and Thao Dien, and District 7, Phu My Hung/Saigon South, are outside of the city center and popular districts for ex-pats to live in.

CLIMATE Ho Chi Minh City is hot… and humid. There are two main seasons in HCMC: rainy (from May - November) and dry (from December - April).

The hottest time of the year is from March - May when humidity is at its highest. December - February are considerably cooler and less humid.

HOLIDAYS AND CELEBRATIONS

The following is a list of the major holidays/celebrations observed in Vietnam. Where possible a date is given, however, some days change each year or follow the lunar calendar. An asterisk (*) denotes SSIS is closed on these days.

1st - 7th day of the 1st Lunar Month (usually late January/early February) - Tet*

Tet is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year and the most important holiday of the year. The majority of businesses will close for 3 - 4 days. Some will close for upwards of one week. SSIS generally closes for one school week.

8th March - International Women’s Day

April - Hung King Day*

30th April - Reunification Day*

1st May - International Labour Day*

1st June - Children’s Day

15th day of the 8th Lunar Month - Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as Moon Festival)

2nd September - National Day* (Commemorates the founding of the

Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 by Ho Chi Minh)

20th November - Teachers’ Day

25th December - Christmas Day* (At this time SSIS generally takes a 3 week winter break; however, most businesses in Vietnam remain open through Christmas)

TET Tet is the most important holiday of the year. It is the Lunar New Year and an important holiday to spend with your family. You will see large scale movement around the country at this time as most people will try to go home for Tet. Many Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese) will return to Vietnam to celebrate with their families. It is advised that you make all travel bookings (flights, hotels etc.) as early as possible. Travel within the country as well as flights out of the country are extremely busy and more expensive during Tet.

In the weeks leading up to Tet, flower markets and flower festivals will pop up all over the city. Phu My Hung puts on an impressive flower festival each year at The Crescent. In the city, the entire street of Nguyen Hue is transformed into a flower festival.

Be sure to explore the city’s parks for all the special markets and festivals.

Most businesses will close over Tet. Some will close for a few days, others for one to two weeks. It changes each year, and closing dates are not always clearly communicated. In the weeks leading up to Tet supermarkets will be particularly busy as families stock up on food for the holiday and purchase Tet baskets to give as gifts. Although many supermarkets will close for only 2 - 3 days over Tet, it may take a few weeks after the holiday until their stocks are fully replenished. You may wish to stock up on favourite foods before Tet.

At Tet it is expected that you will pay your domestic help a thirteenth month’s salary.

TRAFFIC

At first sight, traffic in Vietnam can be daunting. Crossing the road in particular, can seem an impossible task. There are crosswalks and traffic lights, but you will notice that these are often disregarded. When crossing the road, don’t panic. Walk confidently and at a slow, steady pace. Stopping or hurrying suddenly makes it difficult for motorbikes to gauge how to navigate around you.

SAFETY Vietnam is generally a safe country to live in. Of course, there is crime, and it appears that petty thefts, such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching, are occurring more and more. These crimes tend to increase in the weeks leading up to Tet, so it is a good idea to be particularly diligent then.

Always be careful with your bags and valuables in busy places, as well as when riding a bike.

A quick introduction to Vietnamese currencyThe currency of Vietnam is the Dong, pronounced dom. The exchange rate fluctuates, but a common rate to go by is about 20,000 VND = US$ 1.

Please check xe.com or at the bank to see a more up-to-date exchange rate.

Use the following chart to get an idea of what each bank note looks like, and its rough USD equivalent.

SETTING UP YOUR NEW HOME

Setting up your new home can often take longer than you would like. This is generally because there doesn’t seem to be one-stop shopping in HCMC like you may be used to in North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. Obtaining the basics for your new home (towels, pillows, sheets, plates, cutlery, kettle, blender etc.) will likely take you to many different shops all over Phu My Hung. This can be frustrating, but is also part of the adventure of life in Vietnam.

In the Where Can I Find section of this guide you will see many listings under home wares for places to go to in setting up your home.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR SETTLING IN

Page 15: SAIGON SURVIVAL GUIDE

A few TOP TIPS:- The big Citimart in Garden Plaza (near Highlands Coffee) has a good variety of well priced home wares. It is well worth checking out the large upstairs of this Citimart.

- UMA is without a doubt the closest thing you will find to one-stop shopping in HCMC. They have a wide selection of home wares at a reasonable price point.

- Cutlery can be tricky to find. You can buy very cheap cutlery in the supermarket and at local markets. UMA has a selection of better quality cutlery. A hidden gem is MORIITALIA on the 4th floor of Crescent Mall. They have a large selection of cutlery (and other kitchen items) at various price points. Be sure to look around as all of the cutlery is not together and the prices vary widely based on the quality/material.

- Bedding can be another tricky item. It is widely available, however it is often low quality or not to your taste. UMA is a great place for bedding. You can also try INDEX LIVING MALL - they have a small shop within CHOLON ELECTRONICS in the basement of Crescent Mall. They also have a large store in D4. This is listed in the home wares section of this guide. You can also try a few of the bedding shops in Crescent Mall. AKEMI UCHI is very good, although at a higher price point. LOCK n LOCK on the 4th floor of Crescent Mall has a growing linens section. ROBINS Department store in Crescent Mall also has bedding at a decent price point. PARKSON has good quality bedding and linens at a somewhat higher price point. Watch out for sales at Parkson as often bedding will go on sale for 50% off.

- Plates/bowls etc can be found in every supermarket and of course at UMA. A hidden gem is MINH LONG on the 4th floor of Crescent Mall. Minh Long has high-end fine porcelain, however, it also has a wide selection of very reasonably priced plates, bowls and tea/coffee cups that are often considerably cheaper than the supermarkets. ROBINS Department Store in Crescent Mall also has a selection of plates/bowls etc. Often times this is in their ‘sale’ area under the escalator near the mall entrance from the parking lot.

- Kitchen utensils (whisks, tongs, pots, pans etc.) can be bought at supermarkets, and various home wares shops listed below. LOCK n LOCK on the third floor of Crescent Mall is also worth looking at as they have a wide variety of high quality and reasonably priced kitchen

utensils that you don’t often see in other shops.

- If you find yourself looking for outdoor furniture, check this guide for a listing of several shops around the city. You can also venture just past Vivo City shopping mall to the shops on the side of the road. Communication may be an adventure, but these are generally trustworthy shops.

- There are many places to buy household plants. There are a few shops along Nguyen Van Linh Parkway just past Vivo City shopping mall. There are also several shops on Nguyen Huu Tho street a few minutes past Lotte Mart and on the opposite side of the road. Plants, pots, trays are very reasonably priced and most places will deliver to your home.

READY TO EXPLORE THE CITY?

When you need a break from setting up your home, seek out a few of these fun activities:

- A motorbike tour of HCMC. There are several options: Vespa Adventures, Back of the Bike tour and XO tours. Each of these has several options for tours of the city.

- A cooking class. There are a few notable cooking classes in HCMC: Saigon Cooking Class at Hoa Tuc, KOTO Cooking Class and Grain by Luke Nguyen Cooking Class. These are a great introduction to VN cuisine and will give you a few ideas of what

to do with some of those unfamiliar vegetables in the supermarket.

- Sophie’s Art Tour - a four hour gallery tour of Vietnamese history and art history.

- Check out some of the sights: Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, Museum of VN History, Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, Ben Thanh Market.

- Explore ‘backpackers area’ - Pham Ngu Lao, D1. This is a vibrant part of the city that seems to never sleep. There are many restaurants, bars, cafes, tailors and places to book short tours around and outside of the city.

- Check out the AO Show at the Opera House. A beautiful combination of dance and acrobatics tells the history of Vietnam.

- Try to Escape from Escape Room on the 5th floor of Crescent Mall. You and a group of friends have to use the elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and find clues to escape the room before time is up.

- There are many excellent cinemas in Phu My Hung - CGV Cinemas are in Vivo City, Parkson Paragon and Crescent Mall. Vivo City also has an IMAX Cinema.

READY TO TRAVEL IN VN?

Great places for weekend getaways:- Long Hai/Ho Tram are the nearest beaches - about one hour and a half from HCMC. There is not much in the area, however, so getaways here are mostly spent at your hotel/resort.

- Vung Tau is around one hour and a half from HCMC by car. It’s a bigger city so you can go to the beach and explore further afield than your hotel.

- Mui Ne is about a 4 to 5 hour drive from HCMC or a roughly 4 hour train ride. It’s a great location for long weekends. There are lots of restaurants, hotels/resorts, sailing and kite surfing schools and few other activities.

- There are several great day trips and two day-one night trips to the Mekong Delta from HCMC.

- Hoi An and Nha Trang can be quick weekend getaways, but do require flights.

Top Tips for travel within VN:- Central Vietnam is often hit by large tropical storms from October-November. It is best to avoid this area then.

- VN beaches are extremely busy during public holidays.

- Tet is an incredibly busy time to travel. Flights sell out early, prices increase. Book as early as possible. It can be lovely to spend Tet in HCMC. The city is very quiet and relaxing. Be prepared though - most amenities (including supermarkets) and many restaurants/cafes will be closed for several days.

- Hoi An is generally a highlight of anyone’s trip to Vietnam. You cannot fly into Hoi An, rather you must fly to Danang. From Danang you can take a taxi, or have pre-arranged airport pick-up with your hotel for the roughly 40 minute drive to Hoi An. Hoi An is a quaint little town, very popular with tourists. It is easy to walk around as motorbikes and cars are forbidden in the old quarter.

- Nha Trang and Phu Quoc Island are relaxing beach getaways. Phu Quoc is harder to get to for a weekend as the flight times are not particularly convenient.

- Hue is the ancient capital. It is rich in history and interesting to explore. The drive between Hoi An and Hue offers some of the most stunning scenery in Vientam.

- Son Doong Cave was recently discovered and has only been open to the public for a few years. It is an exciting new place to explore in Vietnam.

- The north offers many exciting travel opportunities. The capital city, Hanoi, is a must. From Hanoi you can travel to Ha Long Bay, one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. No trip to VN is complete without at least one night spent on a boat in Ha Long Bay. Another exciting and beautiful place to explore in northern Vietnam is Sapa.

- Of course this list is not exhaustive, but it is generally the highlights of any time spent in Vietnam.
