Conditions for Measurement

A sail presented for measuring shall:

• Be dry

• Not be attached to spars or rigging.

• Have battens removed.

• Have pockets of any type flattened out.

• Have just sufficient tension applied to remove wrinkles across

the line of measurement.

• Have only one measurement taken at a time.

Step 1: Tape some paper to the back of the sail in the area of the

corner point.

Step 2: Using a 1 meter long sail batten…Hold the batten at its

very ends with one end roughly where the corner point will be and the

other end touching the edge of the sail, held firmly in place so it can’t

move away from the edge.

Step 3: Move the batten at the corner point end curving it until the

LONGEST length of the batten touches the sail edge.

Step 4: Mark the curve of the batten on the paper

Attachments at a sail edge, other than a bolt rope and tabling, shall be

ignored when measuring.

This does not cover attachments at the corner of a sail (remember edges

and corners are different)

So, unless otherwise stated, corner attachments are included in

measurement.

between adjacent batten pockets;

between the aft head point and adjacent batten pocket;

between the clew point and adjacent batten pocket;

and a measurement point falls in the hollow, the sail shall be flattened out

in the area of the sail edge, the hollow shall be bridged by a straight line

and the shortest distance from the measurement point to the straight line

shall be measured. This distance shall be added to the measurement

being taken.

If a sail has a Sail Number:

• it should be checked and be in compliance with rules before

certification

• If a sail has no Sail Number but such is required by rules –

• it may be certified but with a certification note that the Sail Number

has not been checked

• If a sail has no Sail Number but such is not required by rules –

• it may be certified (but double check it does not need a Sail Number)
