Conditions for Measurement

Page 3: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

3

A sail presented for measuring shall:

• Be dry

• Not be attached to spars or rigging.

• Have battens removed.

• Have pockets of any type flattened out.

• Have just sufficient tension applied to remove wrinkles across

the line of measurement.

• Have only one measurement taken at a time.

Measurement Points

• Sail edges and corners

• Consider different types of corners of sails

• Extending a corner curve

• When to refuse to measure

• Definition of Hollow, how to bridge

• Attachments at a sail edge, other

than a bolt rope and tabling, shall

be ignored when measuring

A Guide to Finding

Corner Measurement Points

Page 13: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

13

Step 1: Tape some paper to the back of the sail in the area of the

corner point.

Page 14: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

14

Step 2: Using a 1 meter long sail batten…Hold the batten at its

very ends with one end roughly where the corner point will be and the

other end touching the edge of the sail, held firmly in place so it can’t

move away from the edge.

Page 15: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

15

Step 3: Move the batten at the corner point end curving it until the

LONGEST length of the batten touches the sail edge.

18

Step 4: Mark the curve of the batten on the paper

Page 19: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

19

Step 5: Do the same with the other edge

Sail Attachments :

Remember…ERS – H.5.3

Attachments at a sail edge, other than a bolt rope and tabling, shall be

ignored when measuring.

This does not cover attachments at the corner of a sail (remember edges

and corners are different)

So, unless otherwise stated, corner attachments are included in

measurement.

23

Head Measurement Point

ERS - G.4.2

Mainsail : The intersection of the luff, extended as necessary, and the line

through the highest point of the sail at 90° to the luff.

(b) Headsail: The intersection of the luff, extended as necessary, and the

line through the highest point of the sail, excluding attachments, at 90° to

the luff.

(c) Spinnaker: The intersection of the leeches, extended as necessary

Page 24: Sail Measurement: Practical Session...c ERS –H.5.2 Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will have hollows in the leech between batten pockets. It is the poking action

24

Head Measurement Point

• Where is the head point?

• What are the limits on attachment

size?

• (At a mainsail head, attachments

are included).

Hollows in Sail Edgesc ERS – H.5.2

Where the sail edge is hollow;ERS – H.5.2

Where the sail edge is hollow;

between adjacent batten pockets;

between the aft head point and adjacent batten pocket;

between the clew point and adjacent batten pocket;

between the tack point and adjacent batten pocket;

at an attachment;

and a measurement point falls in the hollow, the sail shall be flattened out

in the area of the sail edge, the hollow shall be bridged by a straight line

and the shortest distance from the measurement point to the straight line

shall be measured. This distance shall be added to the measurement

being taken.

Hollows in Sail Edgesc ERS – H.5.2

Where the sail edge is hollow; All fore and aft sails will

have hollows in the leech

between batten pockets. It

is the poking action

towards the leech caused

by the battens that induces

the hollow.

Hollows need to be

bridged to obtain correct

leech points.

Attachment Size

ERS – G.8.7(a) At a Corner or an Edge

(1) LENGTH

At the Head:

The dimension from the head point along the luff or its extension to a line through

the highest point of the attachment at 90o to the luff.

At the Tack:

The dimension from the tack point along the luff or its extension to a line through the

lowest point of the attachment at 90o to the luff.

At the Clew:

The greatest dimension from the clew point.

At an Edge:

The greatest dimension from the sail edge.

(2) WIDTH

The greatest dimension measured perpendicular to the length.

(3) ELSEWHERE

The greatest dimension of the attachment.

Sail Numbers

Need to check Sail Numbers?

If a sail has a Sail Number:

• it should be checked and be in compliance with rules before

certification

• If a sail has no Sail Number but such is required by rules –

• it may be certified but with a certification note that the Sail Number

has not been checked

• If a sail has no Sail Number but such is not required by rules –

• it may be certified (but double check it does not need a Sail Number)

What To Do Next.

To become an AS Measurer of Sails and Spars you need to:

• Submit an Accreditation Application Form containing….

• Evidence of seminar attendance.

• Evidence of your event experience.

• Completed Performance Assessment Form.

• Letter of Endorsement from an AS affiliated class association.

56

Thank you for attending an Australian Sailing

Seminar.

We hope you have enjoyed it.

Best of luck with your Officiating endeavours and we look forward to receiving your accreditation application form soon.
