CHAPTER 17mdashOTTER HEAD ISLAND

Some of the most remote and beauti-ful areas on our trip lay ahead of us

along the Pukaskwa Peninsula It wouldbe another 150 to 200 miles before wewould reach any kind of civilization Idonrsquot think there are even any roads tothis area

The morning was very calm as weglided over the smooth waters A fish tugwas sitting off in the distance The menaboard were tending their nets I think itwas the only powerboat we saw that dayWe cruised along not only enjoying thescenery above but also the scenerybelow At this point we were probablythe closest we would get to

Michipicoten Island It was very tempt-ing to go there But we thought we hadbetter just stick to our agenda - sailingaround the lake We decided that at someother time we would do an ldquoisland tourrdquospending a summer visiting LakeSuperiorrsquos great islands

Suddenly we felt a great joltInstantly we were almost completelyout of the water I quickly shut off the

motor We were stopped dead on top of agiant round-topped boulder The rockwas sitting just below the surface Wewere within sight of two shipwrecks thatlay at the northwest tip of MichipicotenIsland Both of those ships had runaground there Although unlike us theChicago had been blown completelyacross the lake in a 1929 October stormWith 30-foot waves the 324-foot steel-

One of those rare times the lake is like glass Naomi rides on the bow

hulled steamerrsquos crew made it safely toshore Not more than a mile from thatwreckage sat the 205-foot StrathmoreThat ship struck bottom in a severestorm on Nov 1 1924 The ship hadbeen down bound with a load of grainHer crew also made it to safety beforethe ship sank Today both ships areattractions for sport divers

So I guess we werenrsquot the only onesto meet misfortune here If it had been alittle bit rougher I would have seen thewaves splashing over the rock But thecalm day smoothed the waters andhelped conceal the boulder Naomi and Iboth got out of the boat to lighten theload We pushed it off into deeper waterFortunately there was no serious dam-age to the boat or the motor We weresoon on our way again

After several more miles of breath-takingly beautiful scenery we saw fourguys paddling east in two canoes Theywere in a ldquodesperaterdquo situation As soonas we were near enough they flagged usdown and hollered for help They hadleft Marathon nine days earlier andprobably had two or three more days oftravel to reach Michipicoten Harbor Itseems their supply of beer had run outseveral days earlier They offered us asmuch as $10 apiece for each beer that wecould spare But alas we had none Sounless they met someone else with agood supply they would have to surviveon only food and water for seven days

We started out early this morningfrom the little harbor about 15 miles

from Michipicoten Harbor The morningwas calm and excellent for motoring Westopped at Grangly Harbor and foundsome Pukaskwa Pits The pits were dugby some ancient people for unknownreasons They were really neat

On we went The wind started topick up sometime before noon allowingus to sail along quite nicely But thewind soon became stronger and gustedThis kicked up waves on the lake mak-ing our travel difficult Sometime in midafternoon we made it to GawleyrsquosHarbour Naomi and I were wet and tiredand we needed a break It felt good to bein the calm of the bay

We had taken a copy of BonnieDahlrsquos A Superior Way along with us asa guide for our trip The book was acruising guide that described some of thecurious Pukaskwa pits located nearby Sowe stopped to explore and we also want-ed to stretch our legs After a briefsearch we found the pits just as theywere described in the book There was ahuge area of stones about the size ofcoconuts that were deposited along thelakeshore by glaciers Then the rockswere shaped into terraces by ancientlakes or catastrophic storms These hugeareas of stone scattered along the coast ofthe Pukaskwa Peninsula contained pitsdug into the stone Native Americansmay have dug the pits for some ceremo-nial purposes These ldquoPukaskwasrdquo orpits were found at nearly every locationwhere we found huge piles of stones ThePukaskwa Pits gave this region its name

After we found the pits and explored theharbor we sailed westward in stronggusting west winds It was tough goingTacking windward we moved from theshelter of one point of land to anotherWe also would duck behind islandswhenever we could

The farther we traveled the scenerybecame more majestic These beautifulplaces always beckoned us to stay Wecould not But we did promise to returnWe traveled along Pukaskwa ProvincialPark If I had to pick out just one part ofthe Canadian shoreline that I favoredabove the rest I think this area would bethe best Its bays and rocky cliffs forest-ed hills and rugged coast were a contin-ual source of wonder to us Just when wepassed some scene we thought to bebeyond compare we would round thenext bend to find a scene even morebeautiful This helped us forget the hard-ships and the danger we had faced earli-er in the day

When we pulled out of the harborthe winds had picked up considerablyfrom the west to the east against so wehad to tack into it until about 6 orsquoclockwhen it started to die down Earlier inthe day when it was calm I saw a bigfish The clear water held us as thoughsuspended You could see all the waydown to the bottom It was cool Itseemed like we were floating in the air

We pulled up on a gravelly beachnear the mouth of a river Naomi and Igot out of the boat to explore LakeSuperior with her ice and wave action

had built a large bank of small stones orgravel across the mouth of the stream Alarge pool had formed behind this natu-ral dam The gravel allowed the water todrain out slowly and yet maintain a con-sistent water level in the pond The menin the canoes had described this place tous They told us it was a good place totake a bath because it was much warmerwater than that of the big lake The pondwas about 12 feet deep in the middle Itwas the most natural swimming pool Ihad ever seen

Naomi thought that this was thePukaskwa River But I didnrsquot think itwas because it was too small Afterexploring a bit more we traveled westagain We were still fighting the windand waves until late evening The sunwas getting low and we saw a spot thatlooked like a good place to stop Wewere both wet and tired The place westopped was a huge open area of smallstones We looked around and foundseveral Pukaskwa pits I was about to getready to set up camp when I noticedNaomi pouting again I had put her

through a lot that day She had changedher wet clothes several times and shehad changed into the only dry thing shehad left-a dress she had brought forwhen we got to a town

She hardly spoke to me But I readher thoughts We had learned from thekayak outfitters that the lighthousekeeperrsquos quarters at Otter Head wereopen to whoever wanted to use themThis meant a dry place out of the weath-er and a place to hang our clothes to dryI looked at the sun over the water andsaid ldquoI bet we could make it to OtterHead by dark if we triedrdquo Naomipacked up so quickly we were on ourway in minutes

We were under the shadow ofMichipicoten Island all day almost Wepulled into camp somewhere but I hadmy heart set on going to Otter Head SoI pouted until Dad agreed to go

The wind had dropped to almostnothing The waves were no longer crest-ing They had settled to smooth rollingwaves So we started the motor and head-ed out Our gasoline supply was almost

out So I took the quart can of white stovegas and dumped it into our gas can Iadded a little oil and shook it up

ldquoThat will get us a little fartherrdquo Isaid

As we traveled farther west thelake grew calmer The setting sunreflected on the water in a most beauti-ful way

By this time the winds had dieddown considerably and it became morecalm We were running low on gas butwe motored it anyway It was such abeautiful ride The sunset painted the skyred orange yellow and purple Thewater looked like mercury and when thewind ruffled the water it blazed withcolor It looked like Lake Superiordonned her finest saffron and purplejust for us Some of the sky untouched bythe sunset was a rich velvety midnightblue and half a moon shone brightly itsreflection danced just before our boat inthe water Our fishing net was protrud-ing to the front of the boat and it lookedas though we would catch the moon inour net

When we first saw Otter HeadIsland the sun had just begun to set Theisland looked like a giant otter TheNative American perspective was veryanimated-seeing these land formationsas giant creatures The ideas alwaysseemed to give me pleasure every time Isaw one of these things By the time wereached Otter Head Island it was darkWe could just make out where the light-house was and we pulled up to the shoreBut it became obvious to us that this wasnot the normal way to approach thelight I climbed a steep bank up to thelighthouse tower But there was no wayto get in I told Naomi that there must beanother location where therersquos a dockand a trail to the keeperrsquos quarters Sowe shoved off and made our way aroundthe island I could smell campfiresmoke So someone must be nearby

We made our way through a chan-nel between two islands As we roundeda bend I then saw the light of a camp-fire So I figured thatrsquos where the dockwas We were both exhausted from ourlong dayrsquos travel We headed toward thecampfire light To our left on the otherisland was a deserted old fish campinhabited only by a flock of geese Theboat noise and the light from our flash-light disturbed the geese They all start-ed honking and raising a terrible ruckusWe continued toward the campfire lightand could soon see a large dock

We pulled up closer and could seepeople There were quite a few peopleBut by this time I didnrsquot care if we wereimposing or not So we pulled up andtied up at the dock With the geese honk-ing and us pulling up in the dark weprobably didnrsquot make a very goodentrance Climbing up on the large con-crete dock I talked with a couple of themen In the distance we could see thekeeperrsquos quarters There were five or sixmen there We soon found out that it wasa group of 14 kayakers They had beendropped off that day from a tugboat thathad taken them there from Marathon

Then when the sun went down it wasall translucent moonlight and starsWhen we got to Otter Head we found 14kayakers who had gotten there first

They were nice folks So we camped nearthem and they even fed us breakfast Justas we were getting in bed a powerboatpulled in too

The kayakers were going to paddletheir way back The keeperrsquos quarterswas already filled with several otherpeople in the party The option of stay-ing there was out for us Most of the menwerenrsquot overly friendly and the geesewere still honking One older gentlemanwas friendlier than the rest He said thathe had seen us the day before goingdown the Michipicoten River He said hewas surprised to see we had made it thisfar in only one day He also said he hadowned a Prindle 16 catamaran for manyyears He was amazed by our adventureand our idea of traveling around the lakein this type of boat

The rest of the group seemed a bitreluctant to have us there But we weretoo tired to go anywhere else So wepulled the boat up on shore and set ourtent up on the dock Just as everyonebegan to settle in I could hear a power-boat in the distance It was slowly mak-ing its way into the channel The geesestarted honking again and a searchlightwas sending its beam back and forthFinally the boat anchored in the channelfor the night I donrsquot know what time itwas when the geese quit honking Butwe were in our sleeping bags in the tentand we were falling asleep What a day

CHAPTER 18mdashPLEASURECRUISE

The next morning we woke early andstarted packing The kayakers were

also preparing for their day They weregetting ready to cook breakfast One ofthe women was the cook She invited usto eat with them We packed our stuffand then had breakfast We had pan-cakes fruit and coffee It was good Theolder gentleman who had owned thecatamaran and the lady who did thecooking were only friendly people of thewhole bunch After breakfast Naomiand I shoved off and waved goodbye

There was a little bit of activity outon the powerboat that had anchored in

the channel So we stopped by to talkwith them I had hoped to bum a littlegasoline for our boat motor seeing it wasabout 100 miles in any direction to thenext place we could buy some more Wepulled up to their boat and I struck up aconversation The people onboard werefrom the Minneapolis Minnesota areaThey too had been hoping to stay in thelighthouse keeperrsquos quarters I assuredthem that the kayakers would be leavingshortly and they were kind enough to fillour 2 frac12-gallon can with gasoline Wethanked them We said goodbye and offwe went to get some photos of the light-house

It is said that the night the EdmundFitzgerald sank the windows in thelighthouse were smashed out by wavesand debris even though they are some90 feet from lake level So violent werethe waves that night

We set out from Otter Head earlyWe were almost out of gas from the daybefore So we went and asked the peoplein the powerboat They were nice peoplefrom Minneapolis Minnesota Theygave us gas and chatted for a while Itturned out they knew Dadrsquos friendStephen from Grand Marais MinnesotaAfter that we stopped at a beautiful lit-tle waterfall

Then the wind started coming fromthe east and we were moving fast

But today the sun was bright andthe skies were clear The lake was calmWe could see a waterfall over on themainland so we took a swing by to get abetter look The waterfall was beautifulThe water cascaded down into twoalmost identical waterfalls Naomi and Istopped to take some photos Then wewere back on our way

The weather couldnrsquot have beenbetter By mid-morning a nice breezehad picked up pushing us in exactly theright direction There is no better feelingon this earth than to be sailing along at agood speed on a beautiful day taking insome of the most beautiful landscape onthe planet The hardships and stress ofthe past days were forgotten A kind ofhappiness would take over our wholebeings and we found ourselves laughing


Our situation was kind of like thatof Ernest Shackleton and his men whohad shipwrecked in the Antarctic in1914 He and his crew survived onElephant Island Shackleton and eightof his men sailed 800 miles in a smalllifeboat to South Georgia Island But inorder to reach a whaling station he andtwo of his men had to hike across asnow-covered mountain range Afterreaching the summit they realized thatdidnrsquot have the time or the strength toclimb down before nightfall when tem-peratures would plummet So the mentook a coil of rope and tied themselvestogether They slid down the steepembankment on their backs As theygained momentum sliding down themountain at incredible speed theybegan to laugh uncontrollably Theyhad forgotten the danger they were in orpast suffering

So Naomi and I sailed along Therewas a chain of small islands almost likea reef that protected many areas alongthe shore Of all the areas along LakeSuperior wersquod seen this area was themost rugged To me it looked as thoughthe glaciers had not been gone very longThey had left this area bare and rockyThe lakeshore itself showed signs of ter-rible storms We found huge piles of logsand trees washed up 50 or 60 feet out ofthe water This reminded us of theincredible storms that can take place onthis lake

As the day went by the winds beganto increase We were sailing along at topspeed in and out of the shelter of therocky islands By noon it began to getrough on the big lake Sometime laterwe decided to pull into a bay intendingto take a break and have some lunchPulling the boat up we saw some canoesand kayaks on the shore Farther downthe beach we saw the kayakers sitting inthe shade taking a break too Naomi andI talked with a couple of the folks in thecanoes They were curious about ourboat and our adventure They said theywere waiting for the wind and waves tosettle down before they tried to make itaround the next point They seemedquite amazed with our sailing craft

which was equipped with snorkelinggear fishing tackle and musical instru-ments et cetera One of them saidldquoYoursquove got everything with yourdquo

Naomi and I went for a dip I usedthe snorkel and fins in the cold clearwater After the swim we decided tomake lunch Naomi cooked macaroni onan open fire while I entertained thecanoe people by singing and playing theguitar As I was singing two of the guyrsquosdaughters came over for a listen It wasquite a concert there in the wilderness onthe Canadian shore The wind began tosettle down a little So we all packed ourgear and were off toward Marathon tothe west

We stopped for lunch on a pebblybeach and met some canoeists andplayed our guitar and sang for themOne guy was so grateful he gave us someof his funky mango bread

We sailed out of the bay ready forour next adventure We encounteredgusty winds and large waves around thepoint But later the winds subsided abit We sailed past our friends in thecanoes prouder than heck of our littlesailboat We were being pushed alongby the wind in some of the most ruggedand remote area in North America Itold Naomi that most people never evendream of taking a trip like this Andhere we were actually doing it Wecounted our blessings as we sailedbetween the shelter of some rockyislands and the beautiful Lake Superiorshore It seems we were in the rightplace at the right time

Naomi and I continued our journeyalong the Pukaskwa shoreline By lateafternoon we reached Hattiersquos CoveThere were high rocks at the entrance ofthe cove There was also a fair-sizedbeach There were a few people enjoy-ing the beach as we pulled up and gotour gear off There was a large camp-ground there This was also the parkheadquarters

We reached Hattiersquos CoveCampground right outside of Marathonthat night and I finally got my hot show-er It was the best shower ever Wecamped on the beach there and I called

Mommy from the phone booth there Myonly other thought about today was thatOtter Head Lighthouse was very prettyin the morning sun

Naomi and I headed for the show-ers and got cleaned up It felt good Ithad been a while since we felt warmwater Our spirits lifted a bit and wemade calls back home to let everyoneknow we were safe At the visitorsrsquo cen-ter we attended a program put on byyoung park workers who were probablystudents The program told about thepark We went back to the boat feelingrefreshed By now it was quite windyWe cooked supper on an open fire Bythe time we finished it was gettingdark So we pitched our tent on thetrampoline of the boat The wind was abit cold But inside our little tent in oursleeping bags it was warm and dryNaomi wrote a bit by the light of hercandle lantern

As the speed builds and the jib trim-mer brings the jib back to maximumtrim he or she should tell the main trim-mer so both sails come in at the sametime and you avoid problems like abackwind main The helm must also bein the loop so he or she can bring theboat back to closehauled in sync withthe actions of the trimmers

Communication is so importanthere especially since many bigger boatsnow have swept-back spreaders and norunners This means the permanentbackstay controls both headstay tensionand mast bend in other words it affectsboth jib and main If therersquos a slight dropin wind speed and the jib gets too flatthe jib trimmer must talk with the maintrimmer to find out how much backstayease he can have without making themain too deep

How much do you play the jibsheet during a beat

The jib sheet shouldnrsquot be cleatedThe front part of the sail plan is soimportant for getting back up to speedafter hitting a wave keeping the boat onits feet in a puff generating more poweras you glide into a luff and all theserequire changes in sheet tension

Even with the most low-stretchmaterials sails sheets and halyardsstretch and relax depending on the windpressure so you canrsquot simply trim the jibto an all-purpose setting and cleat it offWhen a puff hits or even if you simplysail into a slowly building breeze youneed to counter the stretch by trimmingthe sheet tighter and increasing halyardtension As the puff recedes or your sailinto a dying breeze everything recoilsso less halyard and sheet tension areneeded

When yoursquore racing upwindwhat do you want to hear from thehelmsperson and other crew

On big boats the jib trimmer isoften to leeward so itrsquos difficult to antic-

David Mike when you first sailupwind and trim in the jib what

are you looking for Do you follow aroutine when setting up the sail

Mike The first thing I do is makesure the mast tuning is right for the con-ditions and the mainsail trimmer ishappy with the set up The jib mightappear too flat or too deep only becausethe main trimmer hasnrsquot set up the backof the sail plan yet So any trim adjust-ments I make might have to be changedonce the mainsail and mast are set upcorrectly

The next thing I do is try to get afeel for the wind sheer and wave condi-tions Are they the same or differentfrom tack to tack If they are the same Ican duplicate trim settings on both portand starboard tack If theyrsquore differentIrsquoll make adjustments

Itrsquos easy to see and feel if the wavesare different from one tack to the otherby the bowrsquos motion Sheer is a little lessobvious but you can identify it by look-ing at the windex and telltales Forexample if therersquos right sheer theapparent wind angle at the masthead(seen by looking at the windex) will bewider on starboard tack it will look likeyoursquore cracked off On port yoursquoll seethe windex aligned closer to the boatrsquoscenterline making it look like the boat isalmost sailing into the wind

Your jib luff telltales will also showsheer On port tack yoursquoll see the top(windward) telltales lifting before thebottom ones This means the top of thesail is in a header relative to the bottomTherefore you should move the lead for-ward to reduce twist and trim tighterOn starboard tack you would set the leadfarther aft and trim looser Itrsquos importantto do at least a few tacks before the raceso you have time to get the right set-up

Once Irsquom set up for differencesfrom tack to tack I look at the draft posi-tion in the sail My goal is usually tohave the position of maximum draftabout 35 aft I use more halyard ten-sion if the draft needs to go forward orless if it needs to go aft

I also check the overall fullness ofthe sail relative to the wind speed and

sea state If the sail is too flat I will addmore headstay sag if itrsquos too full I willreduce headstay sag

Do you always want the telltalesto break evenly from top to bottom

Itrsquos nice to have the telltales breakevenly along the luff but when there iswind sheer that may be impossible Iftherersquos so much sheer that you canrsquot alterthe sail shape enough through lead posi-tion and sheet tension then the telltaleswill not be synchronized In this casemake sure you communicate with themain trimmer and especially thehelmsperson so he or she can take thisinto account when steering by the tell-tales

How important is it to trim the jibin sync with the main

The jib and main trimmers shouldbe in constant communication aboutwhat theyrsquore doing for their particularsail and how it relates to the other sail Inthe ideal world both trimmers shouldhave similar feelings for what the boat


Jib Trimming Tips from Mike Toppaby David Dellenbaugh

ipate puffs or lulls Therefore you defi-nitely need someone on the rail to com-municate whatrsquos coming so you can stayin sync with the variations of wind pres-sure and waves You want to makechanges as the new wind and wave hitsyou not afterward when you are goingslow As they say you should aim to bepro-active rather than re-active

Itrsquos also important to hear from thehelmsperson what mode the boat is inFor example if you are lifted and sailingfast to the next shift you need to trim alittle softer for straight ahead speed Orif the helm wants to stay high to keep inbreeze yoursquoll need to trim tighter

On a one-design or a bigger boatwhere you can cross-sheet to windwarditrsquos easier to see the course so you donrsquotneed to hear quite as much from othercrew But good communication willalways help you do a better job of antic-ipating breeze changes and tactical situ-ations

As a jib trimmer where are youlooking most of the time

I am always concerned with boat-speed and performance On a boat with acalibrated speedo and target speeds youalways know how fast you should begoing upwind in the existing wind con-dition In this case I watch the boatspeeddisplay a lot because numbers donrsquot lieabout whether yoursquore fast or slow

On smaller boats without instru-ments trimming the jib is all about per-formance and feel Are we going wellversus the fleet and the guys next to us

So I try to watch the nearby boats (or Iask someone else to tell me whatrsquos hap-pening)

At the same time I watch the main-sail and the helm angle I look at themain to see if therersquos too much back-wind or anything else that might affectjib trim I look at the angle of the tiller(or look where the tape mark is on thewheel) to get a feel for how much rudderangle we have The trim of jib and mainplays a big part in getting the ideal helmangle

Should trimmers always keeptheir weight on the windward rail

Most modern boats rely on crewweight for stability and need the weighton the rail so do whatever you can tominimize the time you spend to leewardA few blocks mounted on the deck (likeon a Melges 32) will allow you to easeand trim from the windward side

There are other ways you can makeit easier to trim from the rail For exam-ple a window in the luff of the mainallows you to see how far the leech ofthe jib is from the spreader An addition-al draft stripe just above the jib clewpatch helps you see the depth in the bot-tom of the sail from the weather rail

If you boatspeed or pointing is notgood what changes would you try

If yoursquore not pointing or yoursquoregoing slow both you and the main trim-mer need to work on the entire sail plantogether and get both sails in sync withthe conditions From the perspective of

the jib trimmer the controls in order ofimportance are sheet tension headstaysag and halyard tension

Sheet tension has a big effect ontwist and depth A quick burp of thesheet will add depth and get the boatgoing or a slight trim of the sheet willimmediately flatten things out Headstaysag also affects the sailrsquos depth and ver-tical profile If pointing is a problem inlight air this is where you should lookfirst Increasing headstay sag will deep-en the jib quickly and add the power youneed to generate more lift

With molded composite sails thedesigned camber location does not movevery much Therefore the trimmer does-nrsquot have to adjust the halyard tension toomuch except to account for halyardstretch Of course you still need toadjust luff tension on one-design sails tokeep the draft in the right position

What can a sailor do to become abetter jib or genoa trimmer

If you want to improve your talentsas a jib trimmer try to anticipate the nextshift puff lull and tactical more Putyourself in the mind of the tactician orhelmsman to understand what the shortterm goal is so you can set up the sailplan the best way to accomplish it Theboats that win have sail trimmers whodo this best on a consistent basis

In addition to cutters and lawenforcement missions episodes alsoinclude Coast Guard training missionslike fire fighting and survival trainingschools Again spectacular footage

places you right there as if you wereone of the trainees

On a recent sailing trip in the BritishVirgin Islands I had the opportuni-

ty to try out a new type of inflatablekayak made by Walker Bay Boats ofYakima Washington And I wasimpressed with this new technology ofinflatable sport watercraft The kayak isconstructed of a seven layer laminatedpolymer coated fabric with internaldrop-stitch fibers This is a new high-pressure construction that makes itincredibly rigid at 65 psi (Other inflat-ables run at 1 or 2 psi)

Airis makes two models the ldquoPlayrdquoa shorter more maneuverable craft at 8and 95 feet designed for whitewaterand the ldquoSportrdquo the longer hull (10 and11) designed for calm water and longertrips We tried the 11-foot ldquoSportrdquomodel and with the rear skeg and a bowkeel the kayak tracked straight even ina good breeze I was amazed at how fastit was in the water and easy to paddleIts 33 width made it so stable I couldget in and out easily to snorkel andswim and Irsquom 64 and 250 lbs I alsoliked the built in waterproof dry storagechamber to store food camera and tow-els and the fixed bungee cords held mysnorkel gear tight

Setup was fast and easy with twoair chambers spring-loaded air valvesand a compact pump with a gauge At 21

pounds this kayak was so lightweightand simple I had it setup and on thewater in under 15 minutes

It comes with a backpack made ofthe same durable material the kayak ismade of The backpack was comfort-able breathable and roomy enough tostore the kayak pump and safety gearand has gear straps on the outside for apaddle For air travel we turned thebackpack inside out so the shoulderstraps wouldnrsquot get caught on anything

The only caution warns that youcanrsquot leave the kayak to sit in the sun forlong because of the higher pressure butI found I could easily let out a little air

with the quick release valves and thenlater have it ready to use again in min-utes with the pump Overall we werepleased with the ease of setup and per-formance of the kayak Novice andexperienced alike had fun with this craftfrom day one

14 cup soy sauce13 cup olive oiljuice from 2 limes2 cloves garlic - mincedFresh ginger10 tortilla shells

Slice the chicken and marinate inthe sauce 4-6 hours in a plastic bagDrain the chicken but save the saucefor later Take a large skillet pan add 2tbls olive oil heat add chicken andsliced fresh ginger You may want toadd some of the marinade sauce at thistime When the chicken is done addpeppers and onions Stir until part doneYou want the veggies to be a littlecrunchy

Take a tortilla shell and place thechicken mix onmdashYOU CAN ADDsliced avocados your favorite hotsauce shredded mozzarella cheeseandor sour cream Wrap it up andenjoy It sometimes can be messy butoh so good

When yoursquore cruising along noth-ing satisfies a sailor like reach-

ing into the icebox for a frosty coldBOC (beverage of choice) Trouble isthat on an extended voyage those littlepieces of water down in there developthis nasty habit of returning to their liq-uid state You could pray that an icemachine just happens to float by orreluctantly put into port and buy moreBut sadly unless you have onboardrefrigeration you will always face ashortage of ice and a ldquolongagerdquo of stuffyou need to keep cold My onboardprovisioning used to consist primarilyof what the old timers called ldquoairtightsrdquo (canned food) But these daysthanks to European ingenuity andYankee marketing Irsquove discovered twoother fantastic mealtime innovationsneither of which requires any refrigera-tion whatsoever They are vacuumsealed prepared dinners and nitrogenpreserved meals Letrsquos take a squint atthe nitrogen meals first

Because of its special properties asa noble gas initial research into non-refrigerated food preservation focusedon using helium Helium is chemicallyinert and therefore incapable of support-ing oxidation (spoilage) However this

avenue of investigation was abandonedshortly after scientists noted that thehelium filled packages kept floatingaway and if eaten made the dinerrsquosvoice sound funny (just kidding)Herersquos the real poop on nitrogen pre-served food

These meals are manufactured justlike conventional ldquored boxrdquo entreesThen through a process discovered in

Spain 98 of the oxygen is removedand replaced by nitrogen Nitrogen pre-served meals can be stored at room tem-perature for many months without spoil-ing They can literally spend their entireshelf lives on a shelf

Now as I mentioned the otherhandy no-ice alternative is vacuumpacked ready to eat meals Hormelreg mar-kets an extensive line of these productsunder the Compleatstrade banner I likethis stuff a lot There are 25 differentvarieties ranging from chicken ampdumplings to tuna casserole with heapsof other choices in between Hormelreg

During the days of wooden shipsand iron men each day was divided intoseven watches five four hour watchescommencing at 2000 hours and endingwith two consecutive two hour ldquodogrdquowatches starting at 1600 hours the fol-lowing afternoon The shorter watchesprovided the port and starboard divi-sionssections with time to eat andsocialize together as a group as well asproviding a method for rotating thewatch hours forward

GOING OVERBOARD ISDANGEROUS USE A LIFEJACKET

When a person leaves a boat andenters the water whether volun-

tarily or by accident they run the risk ofdrowning if not wearing their life jacketOverall two-thirds of all fatal boatingaccident victims drowned Of those whodrowned ninety (90) percent of the vic-tims were not wearing their life jacketThese odds are enough to cause me totake a few precautions How about you

Coast Guard statistics also indicatethat eight out of every ten boaters whodrowned were using boats less than 20feet in length Consider these scary sta-tistics the next time you jump overboardto take a swim or to inspect your boatrsquosbottom Any time you plan to leave aperfectly good boat to enter the water

first put on a life jacket And even withwearing a life jacket you still may be inharms way Here are a few tips to helpyou beat these odds

Many people underestimate theamount of boat drift from wind tidesand currents There are documentedcases of children watching in horror as aparent succumbs to exhaustion trying toswim to catch up to a drifting boat Testthe rate of drift before you enter thewater by attaching a floating line to asafety device and drop it overboardWatch it as the float distances itself fromyour boat Using this knowledge youshould stay within reach of the floatingline and between the boat and the floata-tion device

Others have drowned because theydidnrsquot have the strength to pull them-selves back on board If you have aboarding ladder be certain to place it inposition before entering the waterUnfortunately many fold down laddersdo not go deep enough This results in aknee being at shoulder height on the firstrung and makes it nearly impossible tostep on the rung to reach the transom topull oneself upward Before entering thewater loop a line between the two aftcleats and allow it to droop across thetransom When re-entering the boat usethis looped line to pull yourself upwardas you step on the ladder

If you do not have a ladder use alooped line to create a makeshift ladderLoop a line between two side cleats soyou can step on the line to raise yourselfover the gunnels With a high sideboarduse two lines looped at differing lengthsto re-enter

Small craft under 24 feet areinvolved in the highest incidence ofdrowning deaths where a person over-board is the primary contributing factorThis is why life jackets must be wornwhile in small boats especially if run-ning in heavy waves or wakes Know thepotential dangers of being overboardand if you are going to voluntarily enter

the water take the time to prepare forboat drift and re-entry

Again these odds are enough tocause me to take a few precautions

Despite the late ice out date andseemingly endless winter the

Wayzata Yacht Club and newlyformed Wayzata Community SailingCenter are off to a great start for thecoming sailing season

WYC started things off a weeklate with the annual J-22 Dave CoolIcebreaker regatta It was almost justthat as the ice wasnrsquot off the lake untilthree days before the event In the endthough the near freezing and windyconditions on the weekend of April26th forced Fleet Captain GeorgeHansen to postpone the event until thefollowing weekend for the first timein its history

WYCrsquos J-22 Fleet 1 The Fleet is sonamed as it was the first organized J-22 Fleet in the country Sailing hull20 the familiar Snoopy logo on JoeCool could be seen in almost everyclub race and at many regattas as wellMany longtime Fleet members theauthor included got their first J-22ride with Dave and all have manyfond memories of racing with himHis son Steve has continued to cam-paign Joe Cool over the years butwork and other commitments havekept him from being a regular on thestarting line

Conditions on Saturday the 3rdwere not much better than the previ-ous weekend with winds in the 20-30range but at least a little warmerOnly 13 boats were able to make therescheduled event with only about 10finishing each race due to a variety ofbreakdowns and bad luck

Under the ldquoyou canrsquot make thisstuff uprdquo category Steve Cool wonthe regatta named in memory of hisfather for the first time sailing theJoe Cool for the last time With therecent acquisition of the property adja-cent to the club and expansion of theWayzata Community Sailing Centerthe Cool family made the generousdecision to donate Joe Cool to theSailing Center as an adult and chil-drenrsquos training boat Thus the boat thatso many of us associate with J-22 rac-ing on Lake Minnetonka will now takemany new sailors out for their initialrides as well and continue to pass onDaversquos love of the sport to new genera-tions

just before the finish of the first racedropping them to third However theyposted two more solid finishes beforewinning the last race of the day wonthe first race Sunday morning thenhung on to beat perennial championLars Hansen by a single point Lars wassailing Doug Mannrsquos boat Pura Vida(the former Black Cat) with Doug inthe middle and class newcomer RichBaker the new owner of 4 Petersquos Sakeon the bow Fleet veterans JappaLovald George Hansen and NickAnderson rounded out the top fiveRenamed ldquoFarewell Joe Coolrdquo for theregatta Steve sent the boat off to theSailing Center in style

For the Wayzata CommunitySailing Center the donation of JoeCool is only the latest in a year of majorbreakthroughs Most notably theCenter acquired the property adjacentto the Yacht Club from the Rosekransfamily last summer finally giving it alakefront ldquohomerdquo and much neededroom to better serve the communityVolunteers and students have been busythroughout the winter turning the prop-erty and home into a sailing center thatwill truly take sailing on LakeMinnetonka to a new level Under theleadership of Executive Director CappyCapper there will be a full spectrum ofyouth and adult-oriented learn-to-sailprograms as well as youth high schooland collegiate race programs Thevision is that the center truly be ldquocom-munityrdquo asset with programs boatsand access available to all as well asoutreach programs to bring sailing tochildren and adults from Minneapolisand St Paul as well as the western sub-urbs With the new property andexpanded fleet of boats the WayzataCommunity Sailing Center will be oneof the premier facilities in the Midwestif not the entire country For moreinformation on programs and activitiessee wwwWayzataSailingorg

Many of these activities havealready begun Local high school teamsfrom Wayzata Hopkins and Orono aswell as the University of Minnesotaand University of St Thomas were outpracticing before the ice was even offthe lake and posted some early wins atspring regattas In the LMSS HighSchool Invitational Wayzata HighSchool sailors Kaye Siemers and EliseGehling beat 15 other teams for thetitle while in the seasons last collegeregatta hosted by the Sailing Center theUniversity of Minnesota finished firstand the University of St Thomas fifthout of 14 competitors from around theMidwest

Sailfest 2008 is a family-orientedopportunity for a fun stress-freesailboat chase experience A chaseis a sailing game in which slowerboats start first often by them-selves and are chased by fasterboats over a prescribed course orto a destination In Sailfest 2008we use a reverse order start toimplement the chase Each boat inthe event is given a time to startbased on the boatrsquos speed This is

based on a well defined handicap system called PHRF which standsfor the Portsmouth Handicap Racing Formula The normal course isdefined above but will be modified in the event of very light air Thisevent is all about having fun and learning about the pleasures ofsailing and sailing fast with an objective
