Divine Liturgy

Apolytikion of the Resurrection Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the res-urrection from the angels, the women disci-ples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation, and proudly brought the news to the apostles saying, "Death has been spoiled. Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.”

Apolytikion of St. Andrew-Tone 4 O Andrew first-called of the Apostles, brother of Peter the first-enthroned, intercede with the Master of all to grant peace to the world and great mercy to our souls.

Kontakion for the Pharisee and the Publican– Tone 4

Let us flee the Pharisee’s conceited vaunting; let us learn the Publican’s humility, and cry with groans unto the Savior: Thou Who alone art swiftly reconciled, be gracious unto us.

Prokeimenon Make your vows and pay them to the Lord our God. God is known in Judea; His Name is great in Israel.

The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy (3:10-15)

My son Timothy, you have followed my teach-ing, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, persecutions, sufferings, what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra. What persecutions I endured! And out of them all the Lord delivered me. Indeed all who would live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But people who are wicked and deceivers will proceed from worse to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and how from infancy you have known the sacred tem-

ple writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke (18:10-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortion-ists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heav-en, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merci-ful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Megalynarion for St. Andrew -Tone 8 Since thou was the first to approach the Lord, thou O Andrew was revealed as the first-called apostle. Divine visionary of Christ God's resurrection, do thou now quell the rag-ings of the passions.

Fasting Calendar Leading into Great Lent What sacrifices we make, let them be sacrifices that transform us. They are not ends in and of themselves. They are tools by which we can become a little closer to God ’s image, a little closer to Christ’s life. + St. John Chrysostom Before commencement of Great Lent, there is a three-week Pre-Lenten season, to prepare the faithful for the spiritual work they are to accomplish during the Great Fast.

• Today, the Sunday of the Publican, begins a fast free week. We can eat whatever we like. There is no fast on Wednesday or Friday. This will be March 21th – 27th this year.

• The following week we do as usual, we strict fast on Wednesday March 3rd and Friday the 5th.

• March 7th this year is Meat Fare Sunday. This is the last day we can eat meat before Great Lent begins.

• March 8th – 14th is Cheese Fare week. We are permitted to eat dairy products, but not meat.

Words of Wisdom Let yourself die while striving, rather than living in laziness. For those who die while trying to keep the commandments are just as much martyrs as those who died for Christ’s sake.
