A Prayer for Independence Day

Guide Us as we work together to build a society in which everyone has the opportunity to live with

dignity and hope. Help us to be witnesses of Christ’s love by practicing charity and promoting

justice and peace throughout the world. Strengthen us with fortitude to choose the values of our faith as we exercise our responsibility as citizens. Inspire us

to build a world of greater respect for human life and dignity. Restore us when our spirit grows

weary and bless us in our journey home to You. Amen

July is the month dedicated to the Precious Blood of Our Lord.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In a few days it will be July 4th, and we’ll hear these words in the Opening "Collect" Prayer at Mass on Independence Day, as we celebrate our freedom:

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth….

This will be a bit of a different July 4th! For some it will be a chance to gather a little more freely for a barbecue, or go to a pool or beach. At the same time, we are in the midst of a national drama that causes us to ask deeply, what is this country about? What have we done with our freedom?

So let’s pray with with the question: free for what? We’re not simply free from something, but free for something!

First and foremost, we became free from being hindered in the free practice of the faith; we became free for religious practice! And we became free to respect the dignity of every life, for every life is created by God; every life is deserving of the same and equal respect – and that dignity and respect extend from conception until natural death, and must likewise be affirmed and lived at every point in between.

In the midst of much national self-examination, especially as we consider what may need to change in law to make this true, we do well to consider the laws we have and those contemplated against the 3 standards of what constitutes a “just law”:

First, it must promote the common good – that is, it must be good for all, not just for some, members of society;

Second, equality of proportion: the burden of the law’s fulfillment must be shared by all members of society in proportion to their means (e.g. a progressive tax)

Third, it must not exceed the power of its human authors. No human authority can declare what is morally evil to be good; what is objectively false, to be true.

Take to heart Saint Augustine’s injunction 1,600 years ago: “An unjust Law is no Law at all!”

We don’t have to look far to see that some of our federal and state laws are, in fact, unjust laws, and thus, “no law at all.” These are laws that fail to guarantee the dignity of life at every moment or fail to guarantee the integral unity and dignity of the human body as well as the soul.

At the same time, as brothers and sisters, we encourage and support each person, who struggles in any area touched by such “laws,” in their dignity as beloved children of God, with our love and concrete help on a path that is life-giving and joyful, that is authentically true, beautiful and good. God bless you all!

Fr. Joe

Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Virgin Mary

for Protection and Hope

O, Mary You always shine on our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain,

keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the People,

know what we need,

and we are sure you will provide

so that, as in Cana of Galilee,

we may return to joy and to feasting

after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who has taken upon himself our sufferings

and carried our sorrows

to lead us, through the cross,

to the joy of the resurrection.

Amen.

Under your protection,

we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of who we are in trial,

but deliver us from every danger,

O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 2 Kings 4:8‑11, 14‑16a A woman in Shunem believed strongly in the holiness of the prophet Elisha. To reward her, Elisha promised that she and her aging husband would, within the year, be the parents of a son. Second Reading: Romans 6:3‑4, 8‑11 Paul explains to the Romans that by immersion in water at baptism, they “die” to their sins; by rising from the water, they rise from “death and sin” to new life in Christ. Gospel: Matthew 10:37‑42 With simplicity, Jesus tells his apostles that everyone should love him above all others ‑‑ father, mother, son or daughter. He adds, “He who welcomes you, welcomes me.”

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS SUNDAY, JULY 5 1ST READING: Zec 9:9-10

2ND READING: Rom 8:9, 11-13

GOSPEL: Mt 11:25-30

Prayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe

You

are in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love you above all things,

and I long for You in my soul.

Since I can not now receive You,

sacramentally,

come at least spiritually in my heart.

As though You have already come.

I embrace You and unite myself entirely to

You;

Never permit me to be separated from You.

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that if we love

anyone more than we love Him we are not worthy of

Him. What He means is that we need to keep God first

in our lives. How do we keep God first in our lives? We

can start by talking to Him as soon as we start our day.

We can tell Him we love Him and offer our day to Him.

We can be kind and helpful to others. We can make sure

we attend Mass.

Sunday Readings

1st Reading 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a

2nd Reading Rom 6:3-4, 8-11

Gospel Matthew 10:37-42

Adult Question: What does this Gospel teach you about

the cost of discipleship and how does it relate to your experience so far? Child’s Question: How can you live as a follower

of Jesus?

Things to do during the month of July with your family:

-Have a special prayer time to ask for God’s guidance for our country and its people.

-Grab some blocks or Legos and create unique buildings and other creations for St. Thomas the Apostle’s feast day on July 3rd. He is the patron saint of architects.

-Make empty tomb rolls as a reminder of Saint Mary Magdalene being present to see the empty tomb and Christ resurrected. Her feast day is July 22nd.

-Go fishing or play a round of Go Fish in honor of Saint James the Apostle who was a fisherman. His feast day is July 25th.

-Plan a visit or a zoom meeting with grandparents or grandparent figures to celebrate the feast day of Saints Anne and Joachim, grandparents of Jesus. Their feast day is July 26th.

-Saint Martha used hospitality as a way to serve Jesus and others. Prepare a treat for someone special. Her feast day is July 29th.

Last week’s answers to the Catholic IQ question: Today we continue with the liturgical season of Ordinary time. During Ordinary time, we hear about the teachings of Jesus. The color, green, is a symbol of Ordinary time.

Create a poster, sign or drawing to hang in your home to reflect the following:

Anyone who welcomes you, welcomes me.

Tabernacle- is one of the most

distinctive fixtures in the church. It is

a box or cabinet made of gold in the

front of the church. You will find a

red vigil lamp lighted by it. This

cabinet contains the “holy of holies”,

Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist.

Can you find the Tabernacle in our

church?
