Our aim is to deliver excellence in everything First Aid to Scotland and it is pleasing to report that we havecontinued to make good progress over the past year,despite the very challenging economic climate.

In the course of 2010/11, we carried out a majorrefurbishment of our National Headquarters in Glasgow,and completed our Governance Review, resulting in anew Supplemental Royal Charter and streamlined Boardstructure. I would like to thank all those retiring asTrustees for their sterling work on behalf of St Andrew’sFirst Aid.

Towards the end of the year the Board of Trustees agreedplans to develop a Business Plan for our commercialactivities and for a renewed focus on developing ourVolunteer Corps.

We are acutely aware that there is still much to do, to ensure a greater awareness both of First Aid inScotland, and of the role that St Andrew’s First Aid has to play!

A recent survey has shown that almost 80% of peoplelacked the knowledge and confidence to carry out basicFirst Aid, perhaps unaware that with a target responsetime of eight minutes for the Scottish Ambulance Service,many treatable conditions could prove fatal withoutprompt on-the-spot action.

Meanwhile, four in five businesses also admitted toshortcomings in their First Aid training and cover, resultingin over 1000 fines being issued last year alone.The Board and Management Team of St Andrew’s FirstAid have an ambitious programme of activity plannedover the next year, to meet these challenges, including:

• A national campaign to raise awareness of St Andrew’sFirst Aid and the benefits of a knowledge of First Aid;

• Development of a commercial trading subsidiary;• A ‘Valuing Volunteers’ Strategy to thank our currentVolunteers and recruit new members;

• Development of our fundraising income streams;•Improvements to finance and administration systemsto enhance the effectiveness of our organisation.

We thank everyone who has played their part in helpingSt Andrew’s First Aid to save lives in Scotland. With your continued support we expect to achieveeven more in the years to come.

As Scotland's leading provider of First Aidtraining services, we teach vital life-savingtechniques to thousands of people each year.

During 2010/11 we trained 18,729 people, a reductionof just over 8% on the previous year – a downwardtrend that is unsustainable in the long term. There is nodoubt that we have been hard hit by the difficulteconomic climate and that we need to ensure ourcommercial activities are run in the most business likeway. To support this we now have a plan in place toseparate our commercial activities from those of ourcharitable activities from April 2012. The aim is to enablethe organisation to maximise the potential in commercialmarkets whilst actively pursuing new opportunities.

To support this strategic decision, six additional full timetrainers have been recruited to operate throughout

Scotland and training administration is being centralised toimprove the quality and consistency of service.

During the past year we have undertaken much of ourcommercial training in alternative premises due to therefurbishment of the National Headquarters building inGlasgow. This process went fairly smoothly and in Januarywe were honoured when our Patron, The Princess Royalofficially re-opened the building.

Following the building works, our students are training ina modern setting with the latest AV equipment and wenow have the flexibility to have one large training roomor three smaller rooms, as well as our main trainingroom. This will enable us to increase the variety ofcourses offered and hopefully accommodate an increasein student members in the future.

We are also aiming to move to new premises inEdinburgh during 2012.

St Andrew’s First Aid provide a comprehensiverange of First Aid kits, consumables andtraining equipment to meet any need and, as a not for profit organisation, all surplustrading income is reinvested in our charity.

There is no doubt that the past year has been achallenging one for the Supplies Department. Althoughthe Headquarter shop remained open during therenovation of the building, the extensive scaffolding andsite works inevitably had an impact on passing trade.

During the year the range of our own branded productsincreased as we introduced eight different types ofbandages and three different types of kits: a branded FirstAid Kit, branded Eye Station Kit and branded Catering Kit.

An online website shopping cart went live at the end ofthe year, so that we now have the ability to sell our ownbranded products alongside a broad range of First Aidequipment. The shopping cart is available to both ourvolunteers and commercial customers and we anticipatethat sales from the online facility will increase through the current year.

There has been a great deal of work on the volunteeruniform review, including a survey of volunteer views and requirements. The result of this is that we now havea clear indication of the style and quality of our futureuniform, which we anticipate that our Volunteer Corpswill be wearing in 2012.

Tracy Jones – VolunteerFirst Aid training can help at home, work or inthe community. One of our First Aidvolunteers, Tracy Jones, saved the life of a babygirl found floating face down in a pond. Motherof three, Tracy from Dundee, was on holidaywhen she heard another family’s desperatescreams for help. Their 19 month old daughterhad gone missing from outside their caravanand was found floating lifelessly in a nearbyfishing pond.

Tracy immediately rushed to help and used CPR to bring the youngster back to life.

Recalling the day Tracy said: “When I took part in the StAndrew’s First Aid course I remember hoping I wouldnever have to use the life-saving skills I was being taught.But when I saw that little girl, I was so glad I knew what todo. I don’t know how long she had been in the water butshe wasn’t breathing, there were no signs of life at all andshe was really, really pale. She looked dead and herparents were understandably hysterical. They didn’t knowwhat to do, so I just rushed over and took the wee girlfrom her dad’s arms. I gave the little girl five ‘rescuebreaths’ before giving her CPR. I knew her heart hadstarted beating again when she starting making cryingsounds and coughing water up from her lungs. It waswonderful when I found out later that the wee girl is now absolutely fine.”

Although still a relatively new recruit, Cianna has already had theopportunity to attend events with other members, which include footballmatches, rowing and running events, and the Choices for Life Event2011.

“I’m really enjoying Cadets,” said Cianna. “I get to mix with others thesame age, who also have an interest in First Aid, and I have a great timeattending events. I now just want to keep on going with my training tobecome a full member and then perhaps a Youth Leader.”

We believe every young person has the abilityto make a real difference in their community.

Badgers and Cadets make up our Youth DevelopmentGroup which provides children and young people withdevelopmental opportunities to help them achieve their fullpotential. This is done with a firm emphasis on being led bythe views and aspirations of our young volunteers and witha commitment to equality of opportunity for every youngperson who wishes to get involved. Badgers are for 6 to10 year olds and provide an opportunity for young peopleto meet with others in their age group and participate in aprogramme of stimulating and interesting activities. Wehave 7 Badger Sets and over the year the number hasincreased by 15 % to 85 Badgers. Badgers also had agreater presence at events such as the Youth Conference2011. Cadets are aimed at 11 to 15 year olds and providethe opportunity for young people to develop their skills andinterest in first aid training and associated subjects.

The Youth Development Group continued its work thisyear, with a focus on preparing for the Youth Conferencein June 2011. This was the first time for this event anddue to its success, we expect it to continue on a biennialbasis. Around 80 of our young members attended atTulliallan Police College.
