SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

COMMITTEE QUOTES FOR REFLECTION

“Where is your brother?” “the voice of his blood cries even to me,” God says. This is not a question addressed to me, to you, to each one of us. These our brothers and sisters seeking to leave difficult situations in order to find a little serenity and peace, they seek a better place for themselves - but they found death. How many times do those who seek this, not find un-derstanding, do not find welcome, do not find solidarity! And their voices rise up even to God!” Pope Francis On Refugees

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: Part Three: “Living the Mass: How One Hour a Week Can Change Your Life” is the title of a book written by Fr. Dominic Grassi and Joe Poprocki that I intend to share with all of you in September. It will be another effort in our ongoing adult education process to provide, challenge, and encour-age you to move ever forward in “full, conscious, active, participation” in the liturgy, celebrating the mystery of our faith in Christ. I have written about the Introductory Rites, Peni-tential Rite and the Liturgy of the Word. This is part three, “Making Sense out of Life – The Homily.” Each Sunday the preacher tries to offer a reflection on the scriptures that have some application to our daily faith lives. Taking the Word of God, both the easy parts and the hard parts and asking questions on how this living word can speak to us now. It may be unpredictable in terms of the shape and form it takes, what particular word, thought or idea the homilist will unpack for the people. Each person brings their life experience, their unique situation, emotions, chal-lenges, desires, hopes and dreams to that moment in the Liturgy after listening to the Word that can have an impact on our lives. It is a significant challenge each week to meet that expectation. People are waiting for either a message of hope, something that applies to their lives and affords the oppor-tunity of transformation. An inspiring Word that can lead a person to a change in their lives, a fuller understanding of who Jesus is, and what it means to be part of a faith com-munity. Fr. Dominic quotes Daniel Harris who gives the following criteria for a good homily: It must proclaim scrip-ture; witness the faith; be imaginative; be hopeful, be in touch with people’s lives; be engaging; have one central idea; and be clear and simple. All of us can appreciate a good homily that compels us to look at life differently. A good homily challenges us to put our beliefs into practice, live our faith lives in an active way. In this age of instant information at our fingertips through smart phones and tablet computers, in an age where so much information takes the form of video or imag-es to speak words received by our ears alone is very chal-lenging. You have heard me offer this line attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, though never actually spoken by him, “Preach often, and sometimes use words.” Some of the best homilies are the lives of so many patient, holy, faithful women and men. But, unless we regularly reflect on the Word of God, take it into our being and experience Christ, it has no effect or power in and of itself, merely words on a page, or words spoken out loud. But, when that Word is pro-claimed in the faith community, reflected on by a preacher who spurs people to do their own reflection, that saving Word becomes alive, breathes life into us giving us hope to continue living our daily lives with courage and fortitude. Pray frequently for the preacher that he may discov-er the particular word that needs to be preached; “pushing us to be better people of faith”, better disciples, and “invite others to consider the good news of Jesus as a viable alterna-tive to their present way of life.”

Summer Blessings, Father Larry Hendel

Saint Anthony Pastoral Council News

We would like to thank Mary Ann Low and Jerry Wells for each faithfully serving and concluding five years on the Saint Anthony Pastoral Council. We also welcome Michelle Contini & George Houston, our newest council members, effective June, 2014.

The “Smitty Smithson Memorial” Saint Anthony Parish Golf Tournament

On Saturday, September 20th, Saint Anthony Parish will sponsor it’s annual golf tournament at Los Lagos Golf Course in San Jose. This year, we will again honor the memory of “Smitty” Smithson, the long time organizer and participant in the annual event.

This event is open to all golfers, good and “not so good” (like most of us). It’s a scramble format so everyone has a chance to win. Don’t worry if you don’t have a foursome, we can accommodate everyone. The $85.00 entry fee includes golf, cart, “goodie bag,” tournament scoring and eligibility to win some great prizes. Additional raffle tickets and a “Cheater Package” are also available.

Immediately after golfing, plan to stay for the Barbeque Dinner. For an additional $25.00 you get a Rib/Chicken dinner which includes; salad, corn-on-the-cob, beans, potato salad, garlic bread and refreshments (beer included). Bring your spouse, we guarantee a good time.

Entry forms are available at the sign-up tables outside of the church, after Mass or in the church vestibule.
