A Note About Cold and Flu Season: The Sign of Peace has been an integral and valued part of the worship of the church for centuries in the form of a kiss of peace or handshake. As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact

and some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace but might simply greet you with a smile. Also, please use common sense and good judgment concerning Mass attendance if you are ill. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand-washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. Catholic Mass on TV: If illness, injury or weather keeps you from attending Mass, you may find it broadcast on Sunday mornings at 6:00 a.m. on WCAX-TV, channel 3 (or consult your local listings.)

Televised Masses may also be found on Catholic TV, cable channel 166 (or consult your local listings) Sunday at 10 a.m., 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Daily Mass is Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m., with rebroadcasts at 7 and 11:30 p.m.

Message from Fr. Rick:

The Epiphany of the Lord

“Epiphany”, from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “showing forth”, is the answer Christian Faith gives to the question posed by the beloved hymn “What Child is This.”

This Feast celebrates three events in the life of our Savior, separated by many years, but each one a manifestation of our Lord’s true identity as Son of God and Son of Mary.

The three events are:

The Visit of the Magi to the Christ Child in Bethlehem, the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist, and finally our Lord’s first public miracle: the miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana.

Each one of these events manifest our Lord as - Savior of All Nations - Beloved Son of the Father - His disciples begin to put their faith in Him.

Fr. Rick

Respect Life: “When I meet another parent of a child with Down syndrome, there is usually a moment of instant recognition and understanding. Our eyes meet, and we smile conspiratorially, as if we’re in on the same secret: the fundamental truth that every life is a good and perfect gift. … Our love for our children has nothing to do with their abilities. We love them simply because of

who they are, and understanding this teaches us how to truly love everyone.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “A Perfect Gift” (www.respectlife.org/a-perfect-gift)

Thanks for Asking: Christmas Bazaar results will be published in the bulletin as soon as we have a final accounting. In order to determine ‘how we did’ we first need to be sure that all Silent Auction receipts and donations are in. Then

we need to wait to receive invoices for expenses such as advertising, wreaths, etc. We know that so many of you have given your time, talent and treasure to make our Christmas Bazaar a success, and are anxious to learn how well we’ve done. We are, too! We’re doing our very best to keep you informed, and we appreciate your patience! Retreat: St. Ann’s Shrine in Isle la Motte, VT will be hosting a retreat on the weekend of March 21-22. A retreat is a beautiful gift - come away from the routine of daily life for a chance to rest and reflect. It's also an excellent opportunity for quality time with your peers! Join us at St. Ann's Shrine in Isle la Motte with Sr. Cecelia, a native Vermonter who joined the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal (CFRs). We'll be reflecting on the theme of Spiritual Friendship. Please go to the Diocesan Event page, https://www.vermontcatholic.org/events/ for more information and to sign up. Looking for Donations: We are blessed that St. Mark's family center in Burlington has a bowling alley, pool tables, games and other items which make the space a fun spot for teens to gather on a weekend. We are looking for donations of nice furniture, nice chairs, and monetary donations for a number of items we are hoping to purchase to make this great space even better. Please contact the Youth Ministry Office at [email protected] or call 658-6110, ext. 1240 if you can help. Thank you for your consideration! Retrouvaille: (pronounced Retro-vi) means rediscovery in French. The program helps couples put their broken pieces back together and rediscover their love for each other! This program is for couples with marital problems, including those who are considering marriage separation and those who are already separated or divorced. The program is also for couples who may be cold and distant, and believe that there is no hope for their marriage. It is for couples of ALL ages, regardless of how long they have been married, or have been in trouble. For more information Email them at [email protected] or phone (508) 271-7155. Haven: The most needed items this week are shelf-stable milk, cream cheese, cheese, tuna, canned vegetables, canned fruit and soup. Other needs include large capacity food processor for the Caruso Café, small bottles of hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand soap and grocery bags. Sunday, Jan 05, 2020SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Shoot for radianceThere’s not much we can do about last year—beyond

remembering and, perhaps, repenting. But the new year is laid

out before us smooth as glass and innocent as a baby. Why not

aim higher, cast our thoughts in a more benevolent direction, and

shoot for radiance? Isaiah leads the way, beckoning us to walk in

celestial light. A certain group of Magi did just that, and it led

them to the Christ child. Affix a star where you can see it

regularly. Let it remind you to keep your attention on the child at

the end of its rays.TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew2:1-12 (20). “Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heartshall throb and overflow.”

Monday, Jan 06, 2020MEMORIAL OF ANDRÉ BESSETTE, RELIGIOUS

Really see who's at the doorNo matter how humble your work, sainthood is your call. The life

of André (Alfred) Bessette (1845-1937) makes that clear.

Rejected initially, Brother André was eventually accepted into the

Congregation of Holy Cross. Physically frail and undereducated,

he was given the work of doorkeeper at Montreal’s Notre Dame

College. He greeted and prayed with visitors, asking Saint Joseph

to intercede for all who came seeking physical healing. In time,

people came simply to pray with Brother André. When he died at

age 91, more than a million mourners came to honor the Miracle

Man of Montreal. Greet everyone today with love and

compassion.TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 3:22—4:6; Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25 (212).“He cured the people of every disease and illness.”

Tuesday, Jan 07, 2020MEMORIAL OF RAYMOND OF PEÑAFORT, PRIEST

Good works live onToday the church honors the brilliant Dominican Saint Raymond

of Peñafort (d. 1275). At the behest of the pope, he organized

decades of church decrees into the Decretals of Gregory IX,

which made a major contribution to the development of Canon

Law, and as head of the Dominicans, he wrote a congregational

constitution that lasted nearly 700 years. Saint Raymond had no

way of knowing his contributions would have such enduring

impact. As you use your talents to help build the Kingdom for

good, remember that your contributions are part of a lasting

legacy.TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:7-10; Mark 6:34-44 (213). “When Jesussaw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for theywere like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach themmany things.”

Wednesday, Jan 08, 2020CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Take a break with GodNeed a vacation to recover from the holidays? We all know the

feeling. As busy as most of us are—even in our leisure time—it’s

understandable when we fantasize about getting away from it all.

That actually can be a good thing—when we do it to reconnect

with God and recharge our spirit. Christianity has a long tradition

that supports retreating from the world for prayer and reflection

—whether for a lifetime or just a weekend. Jesus himself often

took time-outs from his ministry. It's break time!TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:11-18; Mark 6:45-52 (214). “He wentoff to the mountain to pray.”

Thursday, Jan 09, 2020CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

The greatest of these is loveLast weekend, the church celebrated the Epiphany—revealing

Christ to the larger world. This weekend, we observe the Feast of

the Baptism of the Lord, where Jesus is revealed once more, this

time by divine proclamation: “This is my beloved son, in whom I

am well pleased.” While many of us slog through the chilly

bleakness of January, Saint John the Evangelist—often called the

Beloved Disciple—warms hearts by reminding us that we too are

beloved. If today finds you struggling with post-holiday blues or

the darkness of winter days, reach out in love to others,

remembering that faith, hope, and love abide—but the greatest of

these is love.TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:19—5:4; Luke 4:14-22a (215). “Ifanyone says, ‘I love God,’ but hates his brother, he is a liar.”

Friday, Jan 10, 2020CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Sit. Stand. Kneel. Repeat. Why is there so much up and down and gesturing in Catholic

rituals and prayers? When we pray, we pray not just with a part

of us but with our whole being—mind, body, feelings, thoughts.

The posture of the body can express what is on our hearts, and,

when we do postures in common, we also express our unity with

one another and the universal church. For example, though

infrequently used, the posture of prostration involves lying face

down on the ground. This is a symbol both of deep humility and

of placing ourselves in the embrace of the God who made earth

and heaven. What postures help you communicate with God?TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:5-13; Luke 5:12-16 (216). “And whenthe leper saw Jesus, he fell prostrate.”

Saturday, Jan 11, 2020CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Ours is a fluid faithToday’s gospel opens with both John and Jesus busy baptizing

their followers. It’s really no surprise that Baptism has been part

of the Christian tradition from its earliest days. Even children

understand the symbolism of water and its association with

cleanliness and purity. From the River Jordan to today’s

baptismal font, the waters of Baptism and the deep desire for a

clean, new life in Christ has a strong pull on us. The next time

you place your hand in water, recall your own Baptism and

pledge to follow John’s simple directive in today’s gospel: “He

must increase; I must decrease.”TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:14-21; John 3:22-30 (217). “Jesus andhis disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent sometime with them baptizing.”

Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time
