In Need of Re-Membering

We cannot deny that our country, our culture, and our Church is plagued by systemic racism. It is not something up for debate. It

is a plain fact. Does it mean that we are racists? Not necessarily. However, we have upheld and hold strongly to

policies that keep black and brown people from having the same experiences in education, healthcare, labor, and

religion. Whether it is through choice segregation, the upward mobility that allows us choice, or disregarding the truth because we have not been personally involved. Regardless of our level of

involvement, we are complicit. Wherever there is inequity, wherever there is denial of others, the Body of Christ remains severed. Our sins—and racism is chief among them—cause

fracture. Our sins break Christ’s body and causes bloodshed. Let me be clear, too, that I am just beginning to come to terms with my racism, and only when we begin can we see that

grace is at work, and grace will bring about reconciliation. In light of recent and ongoing events in our nation, we must look

again at what Jesus is inviting us to by giving us his body and blood. He says they are true food and true drink. Those who

partake will have eternal life. Because we break the bread and drink of the cup we have communion. Paul says that it is through these acts that we are united as one with the One. If any are left out, if any are denied access, if any are forgotten, then we have

fractured our community, and there is great need that we re-member ourselves.

How do we re-member? What do we need to do to truly become the unified body envisaged by Jesus and the

apostles? Overcoming racism, or any other sin for that matter, is not beyond us. The power to overcome lies within us. We are all

gifted with the Holy Spirit, and we who partake in the Eucharist are strengthened by Christ’s very self to be more, to do more, and

to bring healing. I would like to suggest you read Fr. Bryan Massingale’s book, Racial Justice and the Catholic Church as a place to begin. The time to be uncomfortable has come. Might

we allow our discomfort to move us into prayer that leads to action for justice? Let us do all we can to re-member who we are and

who Jesus asks us to be.

Mr. John Hoeferlin has retired, and we are thankful for his

service to the school and parish, but ask your prayers for

his health.

Lauren Pitstick has been hired as the Title I teacher, and

will help students needing extra attention.

Stephanie McCarver was hired to teach first grade.

Julie Holliday will be taking third grade, and Holly Hopkins

is moving to fourth and fifth to join Anthony Butler for

another year of team teaching. All other positions remain

as they were for the 2019-20 school year.

Currently, Mrs. Nagel and staff are devising plans to help

ensure a safer and healthier environment so measures

can be in place when students return to school. She also

reports enrollment is up. Thanks for the parish’s

continued support.
