Dear Parents/CarersCERTIFICATE EVENINGOn Tuesday, former Year 11 students came into school to be awarded with their GCSE certificates. It was wonderful to see students who had left and also to be able to give out certificates to our Year 12 students who have now embarked upon their A Level courses.Thereafter former Year 13 students arrived to receive their A Level certificates. Staff were pleased to see former students and learn how the next stage of their educational/job careers are progressing.CAROL SERVICE AT OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL CHURCH After our Certificate Evening, staff, students, Academy Representatives and Directors of Saint Augustine’s and Saint Bede’s made their way to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for a most poignant Carol Service. Students from Saint Augustine’s and Saint Bede’s were united in choral harmony in a most memorable celebration of the coming of Christ. Many thanks to Fr Tony Rohan, to Mr Long and Mrs Wright for this beautiful Christmas service.END OF TERM SERVICE AND CAROLSAs is customary on the last day of term,

students attended a Christmas Service in school today. Many thanks to Fr Tony, to Mrs O’Connor, Mr Connolly and Mrs Clayton for organising a most joyous Christmas Service. YEAR 9 AUTUMN TERM AWARDS 2015 Emiliya Kott and Alexander Young were awarded the Principal’s Award; Chloe Thomas and Ben Hopkins received the Head of Year Award; Declan Platt was awarded the Spiritual Life Award; 9CB was the form group with the most points with Henry Hemming and Charlotte Carter being the students with the most points; 69 students achieved 100% attendance – a fantastic achievement; and the best attending form was 9WY. Ms Mason Head of Year 9YEAR 10 AUTUMN TERM AWARDS 2015Madi Farmer, Sairah Ahsan and Catherine Berrow were awarded the Principal’s Award; Gemma Humphray and Adrian Noble received the Head of Year Award; Monica Hirawas awarded the Spiritual Life Award; 64 students gained a 100% attendance award for this term, whilst the form with best attendance was awarded to 10RV with 97.4% attendance; in terms of Class Charts, the highest average point score individual went to Isma Mahmood and the form with the highest points was 10WD. Niamh Collins was rewarded for having the best achievement in the most recent set of examinations; Lauren Taylor and Bethan Gayle both received awards for having the best attitude to learning in their recent school reports - both students received 9 'A' grades and 2 'B's in their respective reports; Thomas Saunders was awarded the Spiritual Life Award for his sterling work; 75 students received certificates for 100% attendance; 11GN received the highest achieving form award with a brilliant 98.6% - this was not only the highest in Year 11 but within Years 9, 10 and 11; and finally 11MU was the form that received most class charts points and the highest individual students were Xyrille Fernandez and Peter Nicholas. CATHOLICITY OF THE SCHOOLADVENT WREATHSEvery student in Year 9 wrote a prayer or a hope for Christmas on a handprint, which were decorated and arranged into an Advent Wreath representing each form group. The result was amazing with the most poignant wishes and prayers included. Well done to our Year 9 students. Please see the results of their efforts opposite.END OF TERM SERVICE AND CAROLSThe end of term service and Carols brought all students and staff together for a befitting end to the autumn term. Students sang carols and listened to a selection of songs that the choir sang at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Tuesday evening accompanied by our talented musicians. Fr Tony gave the opening homily and the final blessing before students and staff left to begin their Christmas celebrations with their families and friends. Many thanks to Fr Rohan, to Mr Connolly, Mr O’Connor and Mrs Clayton for assisting me with organising and ensuring the technical set up of the sports hall and the service, to Mr Long and his wonderful music students, to the Year 9 SLSC students for the bidding prayers, to other SLSC students and our wonderful site team for setting up the sports hall and displaying the beautiful Advent Wreaths made by Year 9 students and to Kieran Bates for his poem reading. I wish you a very Merry Christmas.CARDINAL CORMAC MURPHY-O’CONNOR ON THE CHRIS EVANS RADIO SHOWOn Tuesday this week, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor featured on 'The Chris Evans Show' on BBC Radio 2.His 'Pause for Thought' reflection asked us to "think about mercy and forgiveness because it is the wellspring of joy and serenity and of peace":I wonder what is your favourite passage from Shakespeare? It could be from Hamlet: "To be or not to be", or "Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune". But you know what my passage is? It’s from The Merchant of Venice and it is this: The quality of mercy is not strained, it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed, it blesses him who gives and him who takes. If you forgive you will be blessed – forgive in your heart, but also, perhaps, by word or in deed. But it also blesses those who take. Sometimes we take forgiveness from a neighbour or a member of the family or a friend whom we have offended. But Shakespeare says, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. And that’s us.I want to remind you today that God forgives. At times I feel very sad that our country sometimes seems so bereft of God. There is a writer, Julian Barnes, a very good one, and he says, I don’t believe in God but I miss Him. How people miss God. He is there to you even though you may not have experienced Him or perhaps have ignored Him or even abandoned Him.There are nine days to go to Christmas. That festival is not only

This term Harry Perry was the lucky winner plucked out of the hat. Harry has achieved 98.5% attendance since September. Congratulations Harry!

HOLIDAYS IN TERM TIMEParents/Carers are reminded that holidays taken during term time are actively discouraged by the school and Worcestershire County Council. It is proven that taking holidays in term time will affect your child’s education as much as any other absence. We expect parents/carers to help us by not taking children away on holiday during school time. There is no automatic right to leave in term time. Please remember that any savings you think you may make by taking a holiday in school time are offset by the cost to your child’s education and may result in the issue of a fine of up to £120.Since last year, there has been an increase in students being taken out of education for holidays and as a direct result the number of parents issued with a penalty notice has also increased. "Our evidence shows missing the equivalent of just one week a year from school can mean a child is significantly less likely to achieve good GCSE grades, having a lasting effect on their life chances." TRANSPORT UPDATEDIAMOND BUSESSince the follow up meeting with Diamond Buses last week and the subsequent letter sent by the school to Cllr John Smith regarding a swift resolution of the problems faced by our students in terms of the bus service provision, Mr O’Connor has now spoken at length with Cllr Smith. Cllr Smith has been made fully aware of and understands the safeguarding and educational issues that our students are facing because of the sub-standard service provision by the Diamond Bus service. He is also aware that the time frame to rectify these issues is of the utmost importance to ensure that our students are transported to and from school in a timely and safe manner. Currently, I have to inform you that there is unfortunately no improvement in the service, with students once again being stranded in Redditch town centre on Wednesday this week. This disturbing incident was resolved by members of staff ferrying students to school via the school mini-buses. Cllr Smith asks that Parents/Carers inform him by email of any concerns, comments or issues they have with Diamond Buses school service on the following address: Cllr John Smith - jhsmith@worcestershire.gov.uk. In this way, Cllr Smith can compile a complete information dossier on the matter to effect change.

CAREER SPOTLIGHT ON........Name: Tracey Rose Occupation: Lead Cover Supervisor Qualifications: GCSE, A-Level, HLTA statusWhat were you thinking of doing when at school?I always wanted to be a teacher, or a social worker – a job where I could work with young people and make a difference. I fell into becoming a cover supervisor really. I started working at my school as a Grade 1 Teaching Assistant, supporting students in the classroom and within 6 months I was working at a higher grade; delivering lessons to small groups of students who found it hard to be in a classroom with lots of other students. It wasn’t long before I was asked to deliver lessons to whole classes… and so it was. I undertook the HLTA pathway; gained Higher Level Teaching Assistant status and became resident cover teacher at my school. Now I lead a team of resident cover supervisors who work in my school – there are 4 resident cover supervisors in our school and it works really well! If a teacher is unable to deliver a lesson for whatever reason one of us will take it. We know the students; have excellent relation-ships with the students; know the school so can follow school policy and best of all… we set the high expectation that although the teacher isn’t there learning will still take place. Extra-Curricular experience:The more skills you have to share, the more attractive you are to prospective employers –for whatever career you follow! As well as being lead cover supervisor at my school, I run a book club for KS4 and a nail art enrichment for KS3. I’m not trained to do these – I just enjoy them – something fun to get involved with. What does your job involve?• I manage staff absence - so if a teacher isn’t in school they need to report this to me. • I complete all the necessary paperwork involved with that absence. • I cover their timetable. I deploy their lessons to my team of cover supervisors (so we never know what we will be teaching that day until all the absences have been processed).• I ensure the cover supervisors have everything they need to deliver their lesson.• I cover lessons – teaching for absent staff. Today I have taught a lesson on ‘How does Booker use language to engage the reader?’ to Yr 11, ‘How does Voldemort fulfil the conventions of being a villain?’ to Yr 7 and finally; ‘How does Owen use vivid imagery in Exposure to engage the reader?’ to Yr 10. • I ensure that students remain on task with the work they have been set.• I feedback to teachers on how well the lessons went - were we successful in achieving the learning objective? What do you like about the job the most?I like working with the students at my school. It is really rewarding to know that you have helped someone learn something…(and of course I like to have the school holidays off) Anything exciting/didn’t anticipate?Diversity! In the intermediate 2 competition there were 27 students involved with Saint Augustine's coming 3rd place in the team competition. YEAR 9 BASKETBALLOn Monday evening last week, the Year 9 students took on a well drilled Tudor Grange side losing 22-14. Boys basketball fixtures will return after the Christmas break. Mrs HumphriesBASKETBALL TRIPOn Friday, 11th December 2015 selected students from the Year 10/11 and Sixth Form Girls Basketball Teams went to The Worcester Arena, where Worcester Wolves played Leicester Riders. Students were selected due to their high level of commitment and enthusiasm for basketball during training sessions at Saint Augustine’s. This also provided students with the opportunity to enhance their further understanding of the game and to see skills learnt in practice at a high level. Students who went along were Chloe Tustin, Charlotte Petry, Izzy Johal, Megan Mellors, Wiktoria Bienek, Amanda Bunegar, Charlotte Gurney, Grace Robinson, Shauna Rabone and Orla Lewis. At half time a few girls took to the court to shoot a free throw for a prize. Orla Lewis managed to score her free throw to win a prize. The game finished with Leicester Riders completing a strong 83-65 win against Worcester Wolves. A fantastic evening was had by all students, thank you for such great behaviour. Sophie has been a regular face in the Maths department this year and was rewarded with an amazing 83% in a recent practice paper...a fantastic achievement.
