A Theological Reflection on the Interior of St. Boniface Church

Each year around Trinity Sunday is a good time to recall the wonderful, intentional architecture of our sacred space and how it reflects the transcendence of God in Trinity as expressed in Creation.

Dozens of feet above the Nave floor are ten tons of colored glass. Together, these five great windows, each eleven feet high by thirty-six feet wide, express “God, the Creator of All Things,” as designed by C.A. Howard of the Whippell-Mowbray studio in Exeter, England. At two thousand square feet, this is a big work of art! And rightly so, because God in Trinity is much more than we can ever comprehend.

The story begins in the great altar window. Both Genesis and St. John’s gospel open with the words “In the beginning.” As God proclaims, “Let there be light,” the Word, the Light of Life given to the world, is Jesus Christ. Then, as God’s Spirit pushes aside prehistoric darkness, the created order overtakes the swirling chaos and life begins.

Moving to the left, the remaining windows continue to express God’s on- going, dynamic presence in Creation through the gift of the seasons, the predictable, repeatable cycles that sustain all life. In each window, there are two elements continuing from the great altar

window. First is the Orb, the Light of God in Christ. Next, the sweeping, swirling lines remind us that the Spirit of God is ever-present while constantly changing in velocity and direction.

Beginning with Spring, birth happens. Everything warmed by the light shoots upwards. Green celebrates regeneration, growth, the pureness of life, promise for future faithfulness, and hope. Look for the leafy shoots, the dove, and the ladybug.

As the Orb reaches higher in the Summer window, life progresses, the colors are warmer, as God blesses Creation with energy, courage, and prosperity.

In the Fall window, the cycle of life begins to reverse. The light is lower and riper colors swirl like autumn leaves returning to the earth. Much like our lives, it is through aging and death that our journey to God’s everlasting life becomes complete.

The Winter window shows the season of rain, wind, and darkness; symbolic of life’s storms. And while the Orb here is at its lowest, it anticipates the beginning of regeneration, reminding us that in Christ we will pass from this life to Resurrection.

Returning to the first window, “Let there be light,” the cycle repeats. Taken together, these windows tell our story as we experience God in Trinity. Divine, continuing love, expressed in the power of creation, forgiveness, and re-creation.

Blessing to you, Wayne+

HURRICANE SEASON With the onset of hurricane season, Episcopal Relief

& Development provides tools to help prepare for and recover from these

storms. Their Individual & Family Preparedness sheet has tips for creating an

overall plan and supply kit. Their five-week long Season of Resilience action

plan contains weekly to-do lists to increase your safety and ease anxiety in the

face of a disaster. You can pick up copies of each in the church entry, or from

the ERD website (episcopalrelief.org, search “handouts, family

preparedness”). ERD is the independent outreach arm of the Episcopal

Church. Working with local organizations with whom they’ve built long-

standing relationships, ERD is often among the first onsite and the last to

leave following emergencies and disasters. Their work around the world helps

communities prevent, prepare for and recover from devastation.

In case of storm evacuation for Siesta Key, St. Boniface Church’s relocation

site will be St. Wilfred’s Episcopal Church on Wilkinson Road, two blocks east

of Beneva. Sunday services are at 7:45am and 10:00am, and an additional

service will be added at 12:00 noon for St. Boniface.

SUMMER SOLSTICE LABYRINTH WALK What is the summer solstice? It is the day that marks the onset of summer, the day when we, in this part of the world experience the day filled with the most light, often called the longest day. Light is essential for all creatures on earth, and the sun is the primary source of light and warmth. Ancient cultures celebrated this at the summer solstice. At St. Boniface we have a unique opportunity to recognize the solstice as a way of honoring Christ as the Light of the World. Because of our labyrinth we can join with many other cultures and communities in a special prayerful way on June 21. At 7 pm we will gather in the library, for a short prayer service to assist us to scripturally focus, then we will walk our newly refurbished labyrinth and finally conclude with a short prayer service. Please join us for this unique experience.

PIANO RECITAL “Piano Friends” is a local community of pianists that is celebrating 10 years of musical fellowship with a recital here at St. Boniface Church. Included in the performance will be parishioners Ralph Morey and James Guyer. All are

welcome to attend! Saturday, June 30, 1:30 p.m.

SIESTA YOUTH CHORALE Siesta Youth Chorale, St. Boniface Church’s newest music ministry, provides music enrichment for children in preschool through 5th grade. Beginning in the fall, students will learn musicianship skills using the Royal School of Church Music “Voice for Life” curriculum, and through group classes, rehearsals and individual music lessons. To learn more, visit the music page on our website, or contact Dr. James Guyer, 941-349-5616 x326 or [email protected].

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW THIS SUMMER? How about trying your hand at one of our ministries that make Sunday morning happen! The Altar Guild, Flower Guild, Greeters, Nursery Caregivers, Sound Team, Ushers or Video Team welcome you to join then! With the lazy days of summer ahead, what a great time to have some fun, meet new friends and pick up a new skill – all while helping out with essential and on-going ministries. Training is available. Contact Betsie Danner in the church office (941-349-5616 x318).

YOU OUGHTA BE IN PICTURES … and this

November you’ll have your chance! Watch this space for more details to follow.

and MORE!

PRESCHOOL NEWS We had a wonderful “End-of-the-Year” celebration on May 18th.

We are so thankful for all the gifts of time, treasure and talent to

make this school great for children to grow in a relationship with

God.

Summer camps have begun!

We started with Mini Camp on May 21st. Teachers have planned

special activities that engage

children and families in the silly

rhyming literature of Dr. Seuss.

We do our best not to be tongue

tied as we read and rhyme for two weeks, centered around a

different book each day.

In June, we “move” into Sports Camp. We will have the children

very active looking at all the ways we play together to build

strength, coordination and cooperation to grow young bodies and

minds.

We would love to have summer volunteers who have a gift of telling

Bible stories to young children. We need you on Wednesday or

Thursday at 10:30 am for 20 to 30 minutes - Please contact the

preschool office (941-349-5616 x330) for more details.

We still have some openings for the 2018-2019 school year. We

are starting earlier on August 20th, with extended hours for our working parents. Please share with friends and family about our

preschool! More information can be found on the St. Boniface

website under the preschool tab. Thank you to preschool board

members, Ann Hardcastle and Frankie Krueger, that have been

working diligently with Lisa Wolf to update our webpage.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Did you know that we offer Stephen

Ministers here at St. Boniface Church?

Stephen Ministers are laypeople—

Christian men and women—trained to listen and be

with people experiencing a difficult time in life, such

as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness,

or relocation. Their time with you is confidential and

meetings are always held with ministers of the same

gender.

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life.

Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s

love and care to people during a time of need. Since

1975, more than 650,000 people from more than

12,000 congregations and other organizations have

been trained as Stephen Ministers.

At St. Boniface, we have nine Stephen Ministers

who feel called to support others through difficult

times.

If you would like to know more or to refer

someone, please contact our Stephen Minister

Leader, John Buszin, 917-860-1886, or Fr. Jonathan

Evans, 941-349-5616 x313.

CLERGY SPOTLIGHT St. Boniface Church is blessed to have a team of active volunteer clergy. This month we highlight The Rev. Jeffrey Lee Hamblin, MD.

Fr. Jeff was born in Indiana and attended Christ Church in

Gary, where he sang in the choir since adolescence. He

attended Indiana University majoring in Biology and

Spanish, and was active in college ministry and a vestry

member at Trinity Church, Bloomington, IN. Upon

graduation in 1975 he taught middle and high school and

coached football in Ft. Wayne, IN before going to

Nashotah House seminary. He was ordained to the deaconate in June

1980 and priested in December 1980 at his home parish in Gary. He

joined the Episcopal monastery of St. Barnabas in Erie, PA and was

assigned to two missions and had teaching responsibilities at

Mercyhurst College. In Erie, he took on the love of caring for three very

young boys who would become his "adopted" sons. He was active in

forming the AIDS Council of NWPA for which he was named by the

Social Workers of NWPA "Man of the Year." From this he was

challenged by his bishop to go on to medical school. Jeff enrolled in the

American University of the Caribbean in 1988 on Montserrat where he

simultaneously served three congregations and maintained his medical

studies.

Throughout his medical career he has remained an active priest. He

has served in the dioceses of Indiana, Milwaukee, Central Mexico,

Northwest Texas, Northwestern PA, New York, Long Island and the

Caribbean. He is canonically a member of the diocese of Long Island.

He moved to Gulf Coast in August 2017 and currently works as an out-

patient child/adolescent and adult psychiatrist at Centerstone in

Bradenton and Sarasota. On December 31, 2017 he married Mark-

Alan Lillibridge, who he has been with for 20 years.

SUMMER TIME and the GIVING is EASY! If your summer plans take you away from us this summer, please don’t forget us! While our pews may be less crowded, our worship and ministries – and planning for next season – carry on and need your support. For your convenience, while away, you can give easily and securely by:

Texting your gift: Send a text to 73256, with Boniface as the message. You’ll receive a confirming text. Click on the link included in the text. When the link opens, follow the prompts for the amount, the fund (scroll through the options), and your credit card and contact info. Then click the “give” button. You’ll receive an email confirming your gift for your records.

Giving securely through the Members Area of our website (bonifacechurch.org/stewardship)

Contacting the church office (941-349-5616) to make giving arrangements.

Whether you’re heading “home” for the summer or simply taking a short vacation, we wish you safe travels!

SPECIAL GIVING—Father’s Day Tool Fund Each month, above and beyond our regular giving, we have an opportunity to support a specific aspect of or parish life at Saint Boniface. With 9 buildings, 21 toilets, 82 external doors and 23 air conditioners, our campus always has at least one “fix it” project underway! June’s special offering ensures we can tackle the special projects that keep our campus safe and welcoming. Envelopes are available in the church entry area, or you may make your check to St. Boniface and note Tool Fund on the memo line. Your gift may be made in memory or thanksgiving. Gifts received by June 11 will be listed in the Sunday leaflet

BONIFACE CORNERSTONE SOCIETY

The Boniface Cornerstone Society honors parishioners who have

established legacies, through their wills or other planned gift, that create the cornerstones of a vibrant and vital parish to nurture future generations.

We gratefully list the following parishioners whose foresight and generosity leave a legacy

of vital ministry and vibrant parish life at St. Boniface for generations to come, so that all might know the grace of God and the love of Christ.

What does a Boniface Cornerstone Gift do? For the giver, it turns a cherished vision into a living legacy for generations to come. For St. Boniface, it allows the parish to fulfill its mission more completely by developing ministries, creating outreach opportunities and caring for our campus beyond what our annual operating funds would allow. It’s nearly impossible to go through a day at St. Boniface without enjoying the fruits of a legacy established by a parishioner now gone from us. The beauty of our campus, our pastoral care and the Healing Mission, lives touched through outreach, Christian formation, eager seminarians – all owe thanks to a Boniface Cornerstone Gift.

How can I become a Boniface Cornerstone Society member? Membership is simple and rewarding, and is open to anyone who wants to provide for St. Boniface’s future with a bequest or other planned gift – of any value.
