GRACE AND ETERNAL LIFE

Moses is a man after our own hearts, for have-n’t we all dealt with more than our share of stiff-necked people? Indeed, haven’t we all gotten a little stiff-necked ourselves at times? Complain-ing . . . impatient . . . quick to anger. How lucky for Moses—how lucky for all of us—that God is exact-ly the opposite! And we don’t even have to guess about it. The Lord tells us so directly. Accordingly, Moses does what we all need to do. Even with the tablets in hand, he bows down and asks for God’s forgiveness and grace. Encouraging us to live together in peace—and in God’s favor—the Apostle Paul knows all about this grace, joyfully invoking Christ’s grace on us along with God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s. “Rejoice,” he says. And when it comes to rejoic-ing, John offers us the gladdest words of all: the assurance of eternal life through Jesus.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO,

PASTOR….

Life in Our Time You have heard in recent months that we are living in unprecedented times that we are facing an uncer-tain future. While those statements are true, they speak to some aspects of our lives, but not to the whole of our lives. Even in uncertain times, some things remain certain and sure, especially for us a people of faith. What remains untouchable and unchanging, no matter the situation of the world, is our conviction, our morality and our faith. That is why so many of you are react-ing to the events that have taken place in recent days: injustice, discrimination, cruelty and violence. Especially in these unsure times, we remain people who advocate for justice and equality. Each one of us has to find the way to do something. We cannot remain indifferent to the death of another human being, and we must act, according to our gifts and what is possible in each of our lives. “The killing of George Floyd was senseless and bru-tal, a sin that cries out to heaven for justice. How is it possible that in America, a black man’s life can be taken from him while calls for help are not an-swered, and his killing is recorded as it hap-pens?” (Statement of U.S. Bishops’ President on George Floyd and the Protests in American Cities). Whatever we do in order to denounce and protest injustice cannot be violence that inflicts injustice up-on others: “Burning and looting communities, ruining the livelihoods of our neighbors, does not advance the cause of racial equality and human digni-ty” (U.S. Bishops’ statement). All life has being; all life is sacred, but nothing is so far from being Catholic than the use violence to end violence; on the contrary, we read this: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21), just as so many of you al-ready do. You work to overcome evil with good when you help others (for example, through our Reach Out program or Saint Vincent de Paul) espe-cially in these difficult times. When people are more in need, many of you have helped more than ever. “In Christ,” wrote Saint Paul, “there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28). To be perfectly clear, we should add this for those who do not understand: There is not black or white, Latino or Caucasian… we are all one in Christ. I encourage you to continue to do good and to fight for justice, following the example of our non-violent Messiah, the One Who in His love for us gives His live that we may have life.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Moving from Easter Time into Ordinary Time we begin with a celebration of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity. The word trinity means three but when we speak of capital T Trinity it means God. Three persons in one God. As I write this, I know it to be true, but also a challenge to my engineering trained mind. And then I’m reminded, God speaks to us in ways far beyond words, in movement of our heart and very soul. Interestingly, speaking of words, this Sunday’s readings are three of the shortest in length. In one sense, we celebrate what we cannot fully take in, the three in oneness. In another, we hear simple descriptions of God with us, who speaks to our yearning for God’s presence. In the reading from Exodus Moses is gifted with God’s very presence before which he bows and dares to ask for God to be with the Jewish people. He uses a favorite expression of mine, “This is indeed a stiff-necked people;” Doesn’t that describe us in our conflicted moments, when things aren’t going the way we want? He continues, “yet pardon our weakness and sins, and receive us as your own.” What a beautifully stated condition we continue to example even today. Pardon is a difficult thing for us to do, we’re better at holding grudges. But pardon and forgiveness are an essential presence of God with us. They are the foundation upon which we draw as we venture out each day into a world so in need healing. Paul entreats the Corinthians to “encourage one another, live in peace…” so seemingly simple but yet so fundamental to preaching the Kingdom of God. It’s not a contest but rather a journey that we walk together, however haltingly, living the promise of the grace of Jesus, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. We are able to encourage one another because of our willingness to carry and share God’s desire that we all be one. The Gospel, from John, begins with a familiar quote, one often seen on signs held up at televised events: John 3:16. Remember? I apologize to a, ahem, younger age who may not recall. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…” There is no greater gift that we can ever receive. We are to share it, not being “stiff-necked” but “encouraging” knowing that the gift is personal, yes, but not exclusive. Our gift, our living the promise of the Holy Trinity as our most essential foundation, is especially present when we give it away. No, not literally, but in treating others with as much generosity as we can, knowing that failure only wins when we give up trying. Let’s walk in the Light of Christ, letting others recognize the wonder of a love so perfect in God with us, that we too become a gift to them.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK If there is good to come from sheltering in place, it might be that we’ve found what is essential versus what is desired. Using less means more for others.

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL P. SERGIO OVANDO, PARROCO….

Nuestro tiempo

O Santísima Trinidad, gloria a Ti.

ONLINE DONATIONS Many of you have asked me about financial sup-port and how you can get your offertory envelopes to us. Although you could mail them to our office, we ask that you consider giving online. We need your financial support now more than ever. The online donation system we use is safe, secure and convenient. You can use credit cards, debit cards or direct transfer from your bank account. Please visit our website (www.stca.org) to donate now. We Thank you for your continued support of your parish especially in these difficult times.

NEIGHBORS IN NEED

St. Vincent de Paul Has a Help Line (408-778-2928) answered eve-ry day by parish volunteers. Local people in need contact us for help with rent, utilities, food, gas, etc. This ministry is for everyone in the community, including YOU! Feel free to call if you need anything. In this COVID season we are experiencing a higher number of requests, especially for help with rent, as so many are fur-loughed, but financial assistance is availa-ble. Payments for housing are postponed, yes, but they’ll be due at some point and it has made folks understandably, nervous about how they’ll take care of that without the expected paychecks. If you’d like to help with a donation or as a volunteer, it would be appreciat-ed. Thank you to all those who have been so generous at this time of hardship. It is heart-warming.

Safe Car Park Hosts up to eight homeless households, living in their cars, at a site in town that offers show-ers, laundry, food, and most importantly, a dedi-cated case manager to help families clear up debt, improve job skills, and secure affordable housing. They can stay as long as they are working diligently on their case management plan. This health crisis has been a real setback for the families in the program; the list is in-creasing for open spots. Donations are wel-come for ongoing needs. You can find a peri-odic updates for items requested by the families in the bulletin. Current needs - Clumping cat litter, A blender, Dorm-size refrigerator, Bot-tled water, Face masks, Laundry soap pods, Electric frying pan Drop off items on the patio at the SCP located on the MH Bible Church property, 15055 Monte-rey Rd.

Monday Night Community Supper Serves 40-65 hot to-go meals during this time of “shelter in place” instead of our usual sit-down dinner. If you’d like to help, our dinner guests really appreciate when we have the occasional donation of toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, hand sanitizer, etc. You can drop them off at the back door of the Parish Center Kitchen on Mon-days, 5-7pm. Volunteers to prep meals in the kitchen may contact Joe 408-781-3847.

NEIGHBORS IN NEED CONTINUED….

Reach Out Is our community’s food pantry. Located behind the Parish Center and staffed by volunteers from throughout our town, Reach Out provides once-a-month bags of groceries, bread, des-sert, fresh fruits and vegetables, and more. We’ve moved to a “drive thru” format to be able to continue to serve our neighbors. Numbers have doubled or more, with almost half of the guests who come each day being “new” visitors to a food pantry, and all grateful. Donations of nonperishables (especially protein-based items like chili, stew, soups, beans, etc.) may be dropped off at the Reach Out building M-F 12:30-2:30pm. The food bank has just not been able to provide us with their usual deliveries, and the need is great. Whatever you can offer will be most welcome.

SAINT BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS (1844-1879) - April 16

With Immaculate Mary’s “Ave Maria” for its refrain, Andy Williams’ “Village of Saint Berna-dette” peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Top 40 at Christmas 1959, airing on radio stations all over America. Imagine! April 16 marks the feast of Bernardette Soubirous, the teenager who, combing a refuse heap for firewood, saw a “beautiful lady” who identified herself in words Bernadette faithfully reported to the bishop, though she did not understand their meaning: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Relentlessly interrogated, she never wavered in her story or sweetness. Chronically ill all her life and dead at thirty-five, Bernadette left be-hind the shrine at Lourdes where healing wa-ters still flow from the spring that her “beautiful lady” pointed out to her.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watch-ing the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

—John Lubbock

A root beer float party with dads is an annual event for kindergarten. This year they

celebrated at home. Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Garcia, sent directions for students and moms to get everything ready to honor dad. As you

can see, dads really enjoyed the event.
