Fourth Sunday of Lent March 15, 2015

“And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.”

The Pastor’s Corner……..Fr. Lou Vallone I once stopped into a grade school basketball game, just in time to see one of the kids sink a basket. The crowd of course went wild, and the cheerleaders began a chant: "Give 'em another one just like the other one!" Now I am sure these children thought they were being very creative and original - but in fact that chant has been around at least since my grade school days which were not only in another century, but even another millennium. (Dinosaurs walked the earth then.) It is Parish Share time again. The Diocese began their appeal the first week of Lent, because their process is a rather complex and involved one, with pledges, reminders, special receipts, etc. When I became Pastor we changed our process for our Parish to a very simple one: we have a monthly envelop and take up a second collection once a month. We compute a figure for the average we need to collect each month from our contributors, and ask every one to put at least that amount in their monthly envelops. If some can afford more, we encourage their generosity. If they can't make the suggested amount, we ask them to do what they can. It is as simple as that. What has been the result of this rather primitive approach? Well, every single year we have not only made our assessment, we have collected thousands of dollars over the amount we had to turn into the diocese. This is critical, because we keep the overage here in our own Parish, for our own ministry, and we do so tax free. That means that our PSP campaign each year nets us buying power for our Parish – in fact it has accounted for about a 7% increase in out total budget. Many capital improvement and repair projects in our physical plant have been subsidized by this surplus. We are now in a new campaign - but actually we are a three months ahead, since we have already collected the January through March envelops. We need to raise $44,000 this year (which is an increase from last year’s goal because our offertory collections have increased!) and if we simply match what we accomplished last year, we will be that much further ahead. Therefore, the new campaign is the same as the old campaign: we ask each contributor to put $40 per month in the PSP envelop. To compare: The diocese recommends we ask a minimum of $500 per parishioner, or $10 per week (which totals $520.) We are asking $480 in total - so we are proposing a discount! All we need to do it continue what we did and are doing and we will be successful. In short, as your Pastor, in terms of PSP, I am asking: "Give us another one, just like the other one!" SCORE!

Parish Share 2015

This is the amount which our parish must remit to the Diocese of Pittsburgh. If we raise more than this amount, we can

retain the excess for our parish (assessment free). If we raise less, then we must use operating funds to cover the difference.

This figure is computed by taking 17.6% of all our income (offertory, Festival, donations, bequests, fund raisers, etc.). It is a straight

assessment at this percentage for all parishes. This percentage is higher than past years.

The Diocesan Drive began Sunday, Feb. 15 and we have until December 31, 2015 to pay off the full amount of our assessment. We at St. Catherine’s do not visit homes, or

send out monthly bills on pledges as the diocese recommends. We view this as a continued and year round effort.

In each month's envelop packet, there is a blue envelope marked "Parish Share" - cash, check, money order, can all be placed in this, which can be dropped in the

collection anytime you are at church, or mailed in, or left at the rectory, or put in my hand when you are greeting me outside church. A one time lump sum can be given, monthly installments on a yearly pledge, sporadic payments, when you get your IRS refund: in short, any way, any where, any time - as long as you get the contribution to us, and it is clearly marked Parish Share, it will be gratefully accepted.

An overall average of $40 per month from each contributor (including visitors) means that we can reach our assessment with some to keep for our local ministry. This program will only work if all of our people participate. We must average this amount. If you

are able to give this each month, it will add up to what is needed. If you are able to give more: please do so to help the effort. If you are not able to give this amount, please give as much as you can, every bit helps. Any amount at any time adds to the overall total - and more importantly shows that every member of the parish is a part of the whole - our parish and our diocese. Percentage of participation is an even more crucial statistic than the amount of money that is given. We need everyone!

"From those to whom much is given, much is expected."

WHAT? $44,000

WHY? 17.6%

WHEN? NOW!

HOW? SIMPLY!

WHO? EVERYONE!!!
