“The liturgy of the hours, like other liturgical services, is not a private matter but belongs to the whole Body of the Church, whose life it both expresses and affects.

“Hence, when the people are invited to the liturgy of the hours and come together in unity of heart and voice, they show forth the Church in its celebration of the mystery of Christ.”

'Every Tub On Its Own Bottom' and Other Fun Financial Facts

By Colleen Melaugh

Now that I've celebrated my one–year anniversary as Director of Finance at Saint Cecilia, I thought I'd take this opportunity to thank you for your generous welcome and also share with you some responses to a few frequently asked questions.

Q. Does Saint Cecilia receive financial help from the Archdiocese?A. The idiom 'Every tub on its own bottom' is often used in academic settings to indicate that each department or school is responsible for raising its own funds. Many people don't realize that the same can be said of the Church—every parish is responsible for keeping itself afloat. It's a common misconception that parishes are subsidized by their dioceses—it's actually the other way around. Funding to help support the work of the Archdiocese is provided through an assess-ment that is paid by each parish. Our diocesan assessment is roughly 5.5% of our annual income.

Q. I don't carry cash, is there a more convenient way to financially support the parish?A. Many people prefer to support the parish using a credit card or by automatic direct withdrawals from your check-ing or savings account. To learn more, visit osvonlinegiving.com/162.

Q. What is the OCP?A. Typically, offertory giving has been based largely on attendance at the Sunday liturgy and putting cash or a check in the offertory basket. However, in today's mobile society people are often away on weekends and therefore not able to easily contribute. The Offertory Commitment Program (OCP) allows you to decide on an appropriate level of annual support and make a commitment to the parish and its ministries. Not only does this help us in our planning and budgeting, but it makes life easier for you! To enroll please visit: osvonlinegiving.com/162

Q. What does the Finance Council do?A. The Finance Council meets quarterly to advise Father John on all financial matters. They review and discuss the budget and management of income and expenditures, review actual results compared to budget, and lately have been focusing on financing the renovation. While the Finance Council does not have decision-making authority, con-sultation and the promotion of consensus is at the heart of the decision-making process.

I hope this helps clarify some of your financial questions. Keep the questions coming!

CATHOLIC CHARITIES' FOOD PANTRY

THE HAITIAN MULTI-SERVICE CENTER

Did you know that August is the month when most food pantries and groups that feed the homeless experience the greatest demand for their services? It isn't around the Christmas holidays: it's August. Most summer school meals programs end in early August and families can sud-denly find themselves with three or four additional mouths to feed at breakfast and lunch. Also, August is the month when family budgets are stretched to purchase back-to-school supplies and clothes.

Given the current state of the economy for the working poor, our friends at Catholic Charities expect to see many more hungry families looking for assistance at their food pantry this month. We at Saint Cecilia Parish would like to help them meet this increase in demand. Please consider bringing the following items to the food baskets in the back of the church: peanut butter, tuna fish, canned chicken breast, cooking oil, Cheerios or corn flakes, cooking oil, white flour spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and tomato sauce.

A REQUEST FROM

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Sunset Point Camp has provided a dream vacation at the seashore to over 40,000 low-income, at-risk children aged 6-13 from Greater Bos-ton without regard for their race, nationality, or religious affiliation. Nearly 450 city-based boys and girls travel to Hull each summer for a one or two-week overnight camp experience letting them enjoy the fresh air, learn new tal-ents, receive academic summer support and simply have fun.

Sunset Point Camp is operated by our friends at Catho-lic Charities. They have mentioned to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreen's or your local su-permarket, please consider picking up an extra tube of sun-screen and dropping it in the plastic bin identified for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better. The Camp also needs kids' flipflops for boys and girls age 6 to 12.

Bringing Young

Neighbors Home

Our Young Neighbors in Action trip to DC was a great success, but the natural question at the end of service-learning trips is typically, "What now?" It can feel challenging to bring back what we learned and continue to serve those communities in need here in Boston, but Ashley Gioioso, our summer intern for college and youth ministry and one of the adult participants on the trip, offers these tips for our students on how to keep their experience alive:

• TalkAboutYourExperience!Do not leave it all in DC—share your memories with your famliy and friends back home to keep the experience fresh, and let them experience how in-spiring it was through your stories and photos.

• Get Involved! Saint Cecilia has many different ministries to serve those in need. Check them out and see which one(s) you feel called to. And bringing a friend along always makes whatever you do fun!

• Pray! There is power in prayer! Keep the communities you served in DC in your prayer, as well as those in need here at home. And, as Father John put it, prayer is key to making sure the experience is transformational, not transactional!

Saint Cecilia will have many opportunities in the fall for high school students to volunteer at service sites around Boston, so keeep an eye out in the bulletin for the schedule and info on how to sign up!

SAINT CECILIA PARISH

I know many of you have likely already seen media coverage of the conditions of the holding facilities for immigrants across the South Western border. Each of the 22 Catholic Charities agencies in that region are working to both welcome and shed light on the terrible conditions and treatment of children and families seeking asylum in the United States.

The widely circulated children's drawings depicting the inhu-mane conditions in the detainment centers dotting the U.S.-Mexico border were drawn by children at the Catholic Chari-ties Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas, run by Sister Norma Pimentel, where many families go after being released from Border Patrol custody in McAllen.

The Gospel calls on us as Catholics to provide hospitality to newcomers as if we were welcoming Christ himself. The Cath-olic Church, like our nation as a whole, finds its identity and roots in various immigrant communities, we affirm the inher-ent dignity bestowed by God on every human person, includ-ing immigrants and refugees, no matter which circumstances compel them to leave everything behind and begin a new life in our community.

We are called by the Scripture to be the helping hand, to be the welcoming neighbor, and for decades, Catholic Charities Arch-diocese of Boston has worked closely with refugees and im-migrants coming to our community in search of a better life. In every case that we encounter, these newcomers have been forced to turn to Catholic Charities for aid in escaping horrible situations and extreme circumstances, such as religious perse-cution, violent oppression, crushing poverty, the rage of war, or the fallout of natural disasters.

In their time of need, when these people are left with no other choice, they show up at our doorstep.

CCAB offers a wide array of services to people seeking to re-build their lives, increase their inherent skills, and obtain legal status in the United States.

Upon arrival in the U.S., immigrants face a daunting array of linguistic, economic, cultural, and legal challenges. Through Immigration Legal Services, newcomers receive high-quality legal consultation, referral, and representation for an array of immigration benefits, such as political asylum, naturalization, and family reunification.

Our Refugee Resettlement program has assisted refugees from all corners of the world, including Burma, Bhutan, Cuba, Ethi-opia, Haiti, Iraq, Syria, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, and Vietnam, among other nations. Through this program, people seeking to escape hardships in their homelands are given aid in legal-ly immigrating to America, and are provided with a modest apartment furnished with basic necessities, assisted with accul-turation, and referrals to specialized employment and English language services. Along with this critical assistance, refugees receive compassion, understanding, and positive reassurance from our staff to help in the attainment of independence and financial self-sufficiency.

Newcomers are directed to our English for Speakers of Oth-er Languages classes, which provide non-native speakers of all backgrounds and skill levels the support and instruction necessary to master the English language, find employment in their new home, and become fully independent Americans.

They are also connected with the Parishes Organized to Wel-come Immigrants and Refugees program, or POWIR, which engages local churches to recruit and utilize volunteers to mentor and provide other needed support to newly-arrived refugees. The program places a special focus on building par-ish partnerships whereby a parish sponsors a refugee family for a designated period of time that helps refugees feel a true sense of welcome and build social capital, fostering long-term integration.

In addition, our Community Interpreter Services program as-sists limited English speakers in accessing mainstream legal, health, educational, and other services. Our highly skilled in-terpreters serve as a crucial link between service providers and limited English speakers. This program not only serves as a bridge to communication but allows those clients with multi-lingual ability to work as a CIS interpreter.

We at Catholic Charities continue to serve immigrants in our community, and advocate on behalf of just and humane im-migration policy reforms that will restore the dignity of those who are having it stripped away -- the men, women, and chil-dren who are being locked in cages at our borders.

For more information about the work we do, visit ccab.org.
