CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

JOAN COTÉ AT ROSIE’S PLACE

Today Rosie’s Place is a landmark Boston institution serving poor and homeless women. In the early days of its founding, The Bos-ton Globe helped get the word out about its services as the first women’s shelter in the U.S. One Sunday morning in 1979, Joan Coté read one of those articles by reporter Christina Robb and said she felt called to do something there.

A parishioner at that time at St. James in Arlington, Joan worked with her pastor to organize a group of parishioners to prepare a meal once a month for the women at Rosie's Place. Each parishioner prepared part of the meal; their menu included meatloaf, green beans, rice, garden salad, and dessert. In the summertime, they served turkey hotdogs, three-bean salad, oranges and strawberries, and des-sert.

Eventually they were cooking for, and serving, some 100 women and children. They would prepare the food in their homes and then carpool together to bring the meal to Rosie’s Place. It was always easy to find volunteers to donate their time, and especially easy to find someone to bake a dessert, Joan noted.

For thirty-six years that is what this group did, and they continued even after becoming parishioners at St. Eulalia Church. They were all happy to do this meal preparation and serving, and had many good times doing so. The opportunity to be a part of Rosie’s Place also gave these parishioners a chance to donate clothing and bring in Christmas presents.

But it was also sad work, Joan said, especially when mothers had very young children with them. It was sad, too, to realize that some of the women would return to the streets after their meal. Added to that was the troubling sense that many of the women not only had no money or job but also had no prospects for finding work.

Founded in 1974 by Kip Tiernan, Rosie’s Place today serves 220 women and children lunch and dinner each weekday and provides overnight shelter. It houses a grocery store and a craft collaborative for participants to make jewelry. There are classes in ESL, as well as advocacy, outreach, and health professionals, who provide support services.

To this day, Joan carries with her a comment one of the St. James priests made to her: "Look at the opportunity you created for so

many others to serve the poor."

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, A Blessed Easter to you! We are pleased to welcome all who have come to join us in celebrating the Easter message of Christ’s triumph over death in his glorified resurrection. This is indeed a special day for the local parish community, for not only is this Easter Day, but fifty years ago, on this very day, March 27th, 1966 St. Eulalia Church opened its doors for the first time and for the first celebration of Mass in this build-ing. For fifty years the good news has been proclaimed and preached in this church that Jesus Christ is Lord of heaven and earth and that all things, even death itself, are subject to him. For fifty years in the power of the resurrected Christ infants and adults have been welcomed into our community of faith through Baptism, young people have been sealed in the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation, those bowed down by sin have experienced the forgiving embrace of Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, couples have gone forth blessed with the Sacrament of Matrimony to share their love with the world, the dead have been prayed over and blessed, and countless members of the faithful have approached the Lord’s banquet table to feed on the life of Christ in the Eucha-rist. I rejoice today with all those who consider St. Eulalia to be their spiritual home. I remember and pray for all those who in the past had a part in our life here together, and I ask God’s blessing that this community in the future may always be a light on the top of the hill reflecting Christ’s living presence to all.

Your Pastor,

REV. THOMAS F. NESTOR 2016 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Rev. Thomas F. Nestor Scholarship Fund (“fund”) was established in 2012 by the parishioners of Saint Eulalia Par-ish to honor Fr. Tom on his departure as pastor for assign-ment to another parish. Fr. Tom was Pastor of Saint Eulalia Church from September 2005 through August 2012. Any high school or college age parishioner wishing to apply for the scholarship should complete and submit the applica-tion form (found in the foyer of the church or in the Parish Office) no later than May 5, 2016.

This jubilee year, in celebration of the many gifts God has given us these fifty years, we will extend five $1,000 schol-arships to deserving students: three to students in Saint Eulalia Parish, one to a student at Cathedral High School located in St. Matthew Parish in Dorchester and one to a student in St. Jean de Baptiste Parish in Togo, Africa. The scholarships will be granted to the St. Eulalia Parish recipients on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the 5 PM Mass.

APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOYER

MEDICAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the event of a medical emergency in the church, please 1) alert any staff member of the emergency, OR if no staff member is available, 2) go to one of the phones in the parish office (secretary’s office, telephone booth located down the hall from the office, or first floor conference room) and dial 911. Calls made from a cell phone do not give the emergency responder an address. Calls made from a land line in the building will alert the Winchester Fire Department located just around the corner on Lockeland and provide a faster response.

A FOLLOW-UP MESSAGE FROM

FR. NELSON IN TOGO, AFRICA

Hi Louise,

Thanks for the mail and for the all your efforts to support the building of one of parish churches. Sorry for not getting back to early, it’s because I have not had access to the internet for almost two weeks now.

The community of St. John the Baptist will have a school in the near future but they will have to finish the church first (NOT EVEN STARTED) and will have to buy a land close by as well before they can build a school. The kids in check uniform sent to you are in our school in the main parish, Ste. Thérèse de L’Enfant Jésus.

The community of Our Lady of Trinity are trying to open a clinic, as the people in the area experience flooding every year during the rainy season and thereby causing diseases and sicknesses.

Meanwhile we are starting a micro finance project to help the poor and particularly widows in the parish where they will receive, when it takes off, small loans of $100 - $200 to start their own small commerce and prepare them towards finan-cial autonomy.

I will be in St. Eulalia in July this year if all goes well by the grace of God and I will explain the projects of the four com-munities in the parish. Thank you and wish you more courage in your Lenten efforts.

Fr. Nelson
