COMMISSIONED TO LIVE IN THE WORLD In today’s scriptures we hear two different stories about commissioning. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter leads the assembly in prayer that the Lord will choose and commission the person to replace Judas among the Twelve. In the Gospel Jesus prays that his chosen disci-ples might be consecrated, or made holy.

Jesus does not ask his Father to keep the disciples separate from the world, but instead sends them out into the world. While we might think that holy people are set apart from the world, we cannot hear today’s scriptures without realizing that God’s holy, chosen people are com-missioned to live in the midst of the world, where they can reveal the love of God that makes the entire world holy. In honor of Our Lady of Fatima, the parish will have an additional Sunday Mass tonight. There will be a candle-light procession and 7:00pm Mass with a light reception to follow.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother's Day is over. "Mothering Sunday" was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their "Mother Church." Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When Presi-dent Wilson instituted the first Mother's Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose chil-dren had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. — Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Religious Education

Religious Education has now finished Wednesday evening clas-ses. A huge thank you to all the

catechists who worked all year long to educate and role model the love of Our Lord that He has for all our students and co-workers. Thank you to Cookie Gelardi, Trang Tran, Melissa and Matt Shafer, Joann Allegretti, Donna Tkach, Sue Keller, Mary Ellen Poirier, Margie Schillage, Jancy Vincent, Linda Brady, and aids Kelly & Michelle Dodds, all who are committed and give their best to Christ every Wednesday and more.

If high schoolers or young adults would like to become an aid in the classroom we welcome you. Also, two deep leadership is now the way of the future, and we could use your commitment to the program. We are blessed to have three substitute teach-ers for next year.

John Csubak, our incredible volunteer photographer, will have our Confirmation group photo ready soon. When FHC prints are ready we will get them out to you in the SFC school home-rooms, and after the 9:30am Masses for Rel Ed, Home School-ing and Canyon Heights Academy.

The next monthly Baptism class will be held on Monday, May 14th in the parish center living room by Matt & Melissa Shafer. Thank you for keeping this important class going for the parish after taking it over from Mr. and Mrs. Tkach.

Congratulations to the 73 Confirmandi from the school, Rel Ed, CHA, and Home Schooling who are now fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Please see me or Fr. Michael to ask about training to become a Lector or Eucharistic Minister at Mass. Congratulations also to the 85 First Holy Communicants from the school, Rel Ed, CHA, and Home Schooling communities.

There will be another "Altar Server Boot Camp" Training held in the church, either the 3rd or 4th week of June, with Fr. Michael, and Mrs. Schenck. It's a 1 and 1/2 hour training with 4 written assessments completed in one week. If interested, and up for the challenge, contact Mrs. Schenck, and mention the week you are available. We will then decide which week. Also, In the fall there will be the usual 6 week training. Thank you, [email protected].

This year for the first time, we will have a middle school DSJ retreat in the Alliance Redwoods Retreat Center in Occidental, CA from August 6th to the 8th. The theme is “Venture - Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” is open to all current students in grades 5th, 6th and 7th 2017-2018 school year, and will cost $290, scholarships are available. Couples who attend the Marriage En-counter Weekend are more likely to live out their sacramental relationship in a joyful, faithful, and well-adjusted man-ner. This is good for your parish, our Church, and our world! Please publish the following announce-

ment in your next parish bulletin:

Do you know that more than 1,500,000 couples in over 92 countries have experienced a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend? They found something worth passing on. The next Marriage Encounter Weekend is August 24-26, 2018 at the Vallombrosa Retreat Cen-ter. St. Vincent de Paul Pantry Needs Our pantry is in need! We are low on everything! canned fruit, canned tuna and boxed cereal, canned soups, canned beans and jams. As always, staples such as oatmeal, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, noodles, non perishable items, etc. are needed too. Please keep those in our local community in mind and consider picking up any one (or several) of the above listed items. Thank you to our secret shopper who brings us 10 of each basic item. We need help in filling our bare cupboards. What is brought in can easily go in one Tues-day’s distribution of our SVdP grocery bags. We are still in need of the items listed above and as always, be it a can or a case, it counts!
