SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Applications are now being accepted for the St.

church office. Please turn in the applications to

the church office no later than April 8, 2018.

SEASON OF GREAT LENT The Most Reverend Elias Zaidan has issued

the following Lenten guidelines for the Maro-nites of the U.S.:

All Maronites who are physically capable are to abstain from meat on Ash Monday and all Fridays of Lent.

Ash Monday and the Great Friday of the Cru-cifixion are also days of fasting. Fasting in the Maronite Church involves eating and drinking nothing at all (except water and medicine) from midnight until noon. The rest of the day normal meals can be taken, but without meat.

Join us every Friday at 6:30 PM during the season of Great Lent for the Stations and Benediction of the Holy Cross. During the service, we will learn about our Maronite Lit-urgy with our Liturgy 101 Series. A Lenten potluck meal will follow at the MCC.

IN DEFENSE OF CHRISTIANS During the season of Great Lent, we will offer our prayer intentions for persecuted Christians. Every week, an information sheet about the Christians in the Middle East will be published in the bulletin.

ANNUAL LENTEN APPEAL The Annual Lenten Appeal for the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon is now taking place. The Eparchy relies upon you to support our Maronite parishes, like this one, and train our future Maro-nite priests. Every family is asked to participate in the Appeal at a level which is meaningful for them and be generous. You can mail your dona-tion or drop it in the collection basket. Our parish’s goal for this year’s Appeal is $11,000.00. Please be generous and support your Eparchy. Thank you.

40 CANS FOR LENT Lent is our time to cultivate a spirit of global soli-darity. During the Season of Great Lent, we will team up with St. Brigid Church in the annual Lenten non-perishable food drive. Donate one can for every day of Lent per parish family. Do-nations will support the food pantry which is or-ganized and supported by the St. Brigid chapter of St. Vincent De Paul Society. Donations are handed out in the coming year to those less fortu-nate in our surrounding community. Let’s make this a successful drive!

NAM We want to encourage you to renew your

membership with NAM and we welcome all new parishioners. Participate in the 26th An-nual Spring Raffle that will be held on April 22, 2018.

Day of Prayer and Fasting

for Peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and the Whole World

Pope Francis has invited Catholics around the world to participate in a Day of Prayer and Fasting for

Peace on Friday, February 23, 2018, the Friday of the First Week of Lent, in order to pray for "the tragic pro-

longing of conflicts in various parts of the world," particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South

Sudan. Reflecting on the suffering caused by conflict, Pope Francis said, "Our heavenly Father always listens

to his children who cry out to him in pain and anguish; 'he heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their

wounds' (Ps 147[146]:3). I launch a heartfelt appeal that we too may listen to this cry and each, according to

his or her own conscience before God, can ask: 'What can I do for peace?'"

"What can I do for peace?" 3 Ways to Respond

1. Learn about the situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

2. Pray for peace using the Prayer for the Day of Prayer and Fasting for peace in the Democratic Republic of

Congo, South Sudan, and the whole world or one of these prayers for peace.

3. Share what you've learned with others. Spread the word on Facebook or Twitter. Invite your parish to use

these Prayers of the Faithful for the Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace on February 23. Gather your com-

munity for prayer for peace using the Scriptural Rosary for Justice and Peace, Chaplet of Divine Mercy,

Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or Holy Hour for Peace. Give to

Catholic Relief Services to support their peacebuilding work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South

Sudan, and other countries.

In Defense of Christians

Syria

Christians have lived in Syria since the first century and its Christians – Greek Orthodox, Melkite, Syriac

Orthodox, Chaldean, Assyrian Church of the East, Evangelical, and others – numbered more than 10 percent

of the population prior to Syria’s civil war. It now estimated that Christians are 8 percent of the population,

most living in government-controlled territories around Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia and the

Hasakeh Governorate in northeastern Syria. Christians continue to be very vulnerable in Syria, as the pawns of

an oppressive regime that has committed crimes against humanity and as targets for violent extremists and

genocidal terrorist organizations such as ISIS.

ISIS has killed and kidnapped Christians in Syria and destroyed or shuttered all churches in its territo-

ries. Most rebel factions are also Islamist terrorists in nature and aim. There are reports of violent extremists

attacking and kidnapping Christian laity and clergy, including the 2013 kidnapping of two Orthodox Archbish-

ops. In response, many Christians try to maintain a low profile, adopting Muslim customs and avoiding Chris-

tian religious institutions.

Some Christians, particularly those in northeastern Syria, have joined defense forces supported by the U.S.

-led coalition to fight ISIS and other violent extremists. Christians there have also played a role in the creation

of self-governing democratic zones that promote equal rights.

In order to protect and preserve the ancient Christian community in Syria, the U.S. government, at the

highest levels, should continue to emphasize the importance of their presence in Syria and in the region.

Recommendations:

Grant religious minorities fleeing persecution at the hands of ISIS and other groups in Syria priority status

so they can apply directly to the U.S. resettlement program. Christian genocide victims from Iraq and Syria

have been a disproportionately low percentage of refugees welcomed.

Insist in every aspect of diplomacy concerning Syria’s future that Christians, other minorities, and all Syri-

an people enjoy security, equality of citizenship, and the ability to practice their faith openly and in peace.

Work with Syria’s religious minorities and other key elements of civil society to develop a set of principles

necessary for the achievement of a new Syria that guarantees not only the survival and security of Christians

and other religious minorities, but also their full participation as equal citizens in the public life of the nation

with the ability to practice their faith openly and in peace.
