The Liturgy of the Word ¶Sit.

THE FIRST READING — Acts 1 : 1–11In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Isræl?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

PSALM — Psalm 47: 1–2; 5–8Anglican chant is sung with the natural rhythm and stress of the words, which are chanted to the first note of each section until the first upright [|] which like the others mark the music’s barline. Sing one syllable to a note unless: the word is in italic type (when it should be sung to two notes) or a midpoint [·] appears (when all syllables before it should be sung to the first, all after to the second, note).

THE SECOND READING — Ephesians 1 : 17–23Brethren: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fulness of him who fills all in all.

¶Stand.Alleluia Chant: Alleluia, Alleluia. God is gone up with a merry noise : and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet. Alleluia. The Lord is among them as in the holy places of Sinai, he is gone up on high : he hath led captivity captive. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL — Luke 24:46–53At that time Jesus said to his disciples “Thus it is written, that the Christ should su^er and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.” Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.

The Ascension (1918). Woodcut by Eric Gill for The Game, Vol II, No. 2, magazine of the Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic, a Catholic lay religious order of craftsmen — all converts from Anglicanism —who organized their lives along Distributist principles in the small village of Ditchling, Sussex; it existed until 1989. Gill (1882–1940), one of the Guild’s founders (all third order Dominicans) in 1921, left Ditchling for Wales three years later. Gill’s Catholicism was fervent, although his life was unorthodox in the extreme. He was one of the most influential English typedesigners, sculptors and engravers of the first half of the twentieth century. The text face used in this brochure is his Golden Cockerel, designed for a private press of that name and famously used in an edition of the Four Gospels published by that firm in the same year.

During Eastertide we will sing the season’s Marian Antiphon after Mass. After the Blessing and Dismissal, turn to face the statue of Our Lady.

RE G I NA { C Æ L I { L Æ TA RERejoice, O Mary

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. For the Lord is risen indeed, alleluia.Let us pray:O God, who by the resurrection of thy son Jesus Christ, didst vouchsafe to give gladness unto the world: grant, we beseech thee, that we, being holpen by the Virgin Mary, his Mother, may attain unto the joys of everlasting life. $ Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The authorship of this ancient Antiphon — most likely composed between the ninth and twelfth centuries — is unknown. Pope Gregory V, who died in 998, is a candidate. Tradition names Gregory the Great, however, and says he added the fourth line after hearing angels sing the first three whilst processing with the icon of the Virgin known as Salus Populi Romani (said to have been painted by Saint Luke) on Easter morning, 596. The Regina Cæli is sung or recited in place of the Angelus from Holy Saturday through the Saturday after Pentecost.

This ivory panel was probably originally part of a small box, perhaps used as a reliquary. It was made in either Rome or Milan around the year 400 and, besides showing the three Marys at the Tomb is one of the earliest representations of the Ascension. It was made at the same period a commemoration of the event was added to the Church’s liturgical calendar.
