It would be indeed meet or us not at all to require the aid othe written word, but to exhibit a lie so pure, that the graceo the Spirit should be instead o books to our souls, and that

as these are inscribed with ink, even so should our hearts bewith the Spirit. But, since we have utterly put away rom usthis grace, come, let us at any rate embrace the second bestcourse.

For that the ormer was better, God hath made maniest,both by His words and by His doings, since unto Noah, andunto Abraham, and unto his ospring, and unto Job, and untoMoses too, He discoursed not by writings, but Himsel by

all things to your remembrance (John 14:26). And that thoumayest learn that this was ar better, hear what He saith by theProphet: I will make a new covenant with you, putting my laws

into their mind, and in their heart I will write them, and, theyshall be all taught o God(c. Jer. 31:33 LXX; John 6:45). AndPaul too, pointing out the same superiority, said that they hadreceived a law not in tables o stone, but in feshy tables o theheart(II Cor. 3:3).

But since in process o time they made shipwreck, somewith regard to doctrines, others as to lie and manners, there

was again need that they should be put in remembrance by thewritten word.Refect then how great an evil it is or us, who ought to

live so purely as not even to need written words, but to yieldup our hearts, as books, to the Spirit; now that we have lostthat honor, and are come to have need o these, to ail again induly employing even this second remedy. For i it be a blameto stand in need o written words, and not to have brought

one and the same sense, but one understands its words in oneway, another in another; so that it seems to be capable o asmany interpretations as there are interpreters.61

they prepare some bitter draught or children; they smear theedge o the cup all round with honey, that the unsuspectingchild, having rst tasted the sweet, may have no ear o thebitter. continually inest the Churchs olds, and tear in pieces the focko Christ wherever they are able? But that they may with moresuccessul guile steal upon the unsuspecting sheep, retainingthe erocity o the wol, they put o his appearance, and wrapthemselves, so to say, in the language o the Divine Law, as ina feece, so that one, having elt the sotness o wool, may haveno dread o the wol s angs. As oten as either alse prophetsor alse apostles or alse teachers cite passages rom the Divine

Law, by means o which, misinterpreted, they seek to prop uptheir own errors, there is no doubt that they are ollowing thecunning devices o their ather [the devil], which assuredly hewould never have devised had he not known that where hecould raudulently and by stealth introduce error, there is noeasier way o eecting his impious purpose than by pretendingthe authority o Holy Scripture.

But someone will say, What proo have we that the devilis wont to appeal to Holy Scripture?
