Dear Parish Family, Perhaps you will remember the “buzz” that was created a few years ago when Bishop Robert Barron released his incredibly powerful series Catholicism. We had a successful adult formation series that year with hundreds of people joining us for the talks featuring the viewing of the DVD’s, use of the study guide, and group discussions. Cardinal Dolan of New York said: Father Robert Barron’s Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith takes a path less traveled in leading us to explore our Catholic Faith through stories, biographies, and images. Through the epic, award winning series, we meet the “Word made Flesh” not only in theological formulations, but also in saints and poets, cathedrals and chants, priests and prophets. What makes Catholicism so compelling are the ways in which Bishop Barron shows how the Incarnation goes on in the true, the good, and the beautiful. The series covers the breadth, width, and beauty of our Catholic Faith — The Revelation of God Become Man; the Teachings of Jesus (morality); Philosophical/Intellectual arguments for the existence of God; Mary; Peter and Paul and the Missionary Activity of the Church; The union of Christ to His Church; The Mystery of the Liturgy and the Eucharist; The Communion of Saints; Prayer and life of the Spirit; and The Last Things. Over the past several months as I recovered from my surgeries, and with the somewhat “slower” summer schedule, I’ve had the opportunity to watch the ten episodes again. Catholicism [available from Word on Fire Publications, or Amazon] really is a wonderfully informative, thought provoking, and entertaining presentation of the Catholic Faith. I would encourage everyone to re-visit this beautiful series. I was thinking, what a great “family gift” the series, especially the DVD’s, would make for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, baptisms, Confirmations, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, or any other special occasion. Watch it yourself, pass it around the family. It’s a great gift of faith and opportunity for Evangelization in the home... where we need it first and most. One thing that struck me is the relevance of the DVD presentations. Over the years I’ve realized that the concerns, questions, and inquiries most presented and asked of me, as a priest, are exactly the topics addressed by Bishop Barron... of course, he does so in such a complete, intelligent, and entertaining way. In our fight against secularism, and in our effort to preserve the Faith in our families and parish, I would recommend that everyone seriously consider re-visiting the series. If you’ve never seen it... get a copy and start watching. You

won’t be disappointed. It would make a great gift for yourself, your family, and friends. To live our faith we have to know it. Catholics of all ages will benefit from viewing the Catholicism series. Let’s all do what we can to study and know our Catholic Faith... which will lead to greater love and devotion. As Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said: There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be... let’s not be among their number. Give Jesus your heart, and He will give you Heaven! Father De Salvo

Mary Our Hope Pope Francis I

"We are not orphans, we have a mother in heaven!" Mary, like many mothers throughout the world, is an example of strength and courage in accepting new life and in sharing the suffering of their children. Although she had no idea of what awaited her when she accepted to bear God's son, Mary in that instant appears to us like one of the many mothers in our world, courageous to the extreme. Her motherly love and courage is seen again at the foot of the cross. She teaches us the virtue of waiting even when everything appears meaningless. We are not or-phans, we have a mother in heaven — in difficult mo-ments, may Mary, the mother that Jesus has given to us all, always guide our steps. The Gospels portray Mary mostly as a "woman of silence,” but one who meditated on every word and every event in her heart. She is not a woman who is depressed in front of the uncertainties of life, especially when noth-ing seems to be going right. Instead, she is a woman who listens. Mary's silence in the Gospel is particularly evi-dent in Jesus' final moments where her presence during Christ's passion is "eclipsed" until she reappears at a cru-cial moment: when a good number of friends vanished because of fear. Mothers do not betray, and in that instance, at the foot of the cross, none of us can say which one was the crueler pas-sion: that of the innocent man who dies on the scaffold of the cross or the agony of a mother who accompanies her son in his final moments of life. Mary was "there" not just out of faithful-ness to God's divine plan but also because of her instinct as a mother who just suffers every time her child does.

Wednesday, August 15th Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A holy day of obligation

I n 1950 Pope Pius XII officially proclaimed

the doctrine of the Assumption: The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This doctrine, which has its roots in ancient Catholic belief, shows the connection between Mary's unique role as God's mother preserved from original sin and the reality of our final resurrection in Christ. In Her assumption, Mary was preserved

from the decay of death. Mary, the mother of the Savior, is the first to share in the Lord's resurrection. She is the living model for all people whose future destiny is union with the risen Lord. Her assumption into heaven is an anticipation of our own resurrection. However, since Mary was truly the Mother of God, the Mother of Jesus, and since she was preserved from sin from the first moment of the conception within the womb of Saint Anne [her mother], it only stands to reason that she should not have to undergo the ultimate price for sin... the corruption of the grace. And so, She was given the glorified body of resurrection that awaits all of us at the final judgement. The doctrine of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven “completes the story” of the Immaculate Conception of Mary which we celebrate on December 8th. Wednesday, August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a holy day of obligation, a day on which all Catholics are bound to attend mass the same as on Sunday. The obligation to attend mass is a serious one, and according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, to disregard the obligation is seriously sinful. Masses for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 14th at 5pm. Masses on the holy day will be celebrated at 7am, Noon, 5 and 7pm. Let's fill the church to over-flowing!

Come celebrate our Mother's joy, and our hope of Heaven!

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI The Assumption of the Virgin Mary gives Christians hope of a future united with Christ, both in this life and in heaven. This feast tells us that we too will be with Jesus in the joy of God and invites us to have courage, to believe that the power of the resurrection of Christ can work in us as well. The feast of the Assumption serves to inspire the faithful to evangelize modern society and helps make us men and women who every day try to live as resurrected — carrying the light of goodness into the darkness of evil in the world. In the story of the Visitation, found in the Gospel for the Assumption, the Blessed Mother travels to visit her cousin Saint Elizabeth, who is overjoyed that the “mother of her Lord” would come to her. Mary comes into the house of Zechariah and Elizabeth, but does not enter alone. She enters carrying in her womb the child in which God himself became man. The evangelist Luke highlights the significance of Elizabeth, her husband Zechariah and the baby in her womb, John the Baptist, waiting for Mary's arrival: Zechariah and Elizabeth and the infant John the Baptist are, in fact, the symbol of all the righteous of Israel, whose heart, full of hope, awaits the coming of the Messiah. The Holy Spirit then opens the eyes of Saint Elizabeth to recognize that Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, since she carries the Son of God within her very self. When Elizabeth exclaims, “Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy,” Saint Luke uses the term skirtan, which translates to “bounce.” This is the same term used to describe the holy dance of King David in front of the Ark of the Covenant when it was returned to Israel in the Old Testament Book of Second Samuel. John the Baptist in the womb is dancing before the ark, like David. Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, before which the heart leaps for joy at the Mother of God in the world. Men and women today are also the recipients of God's love and must do as Mary did: accept Christ in faith, be enlightened and guided by his word, and follow him every day.

May the example and prayers of Mary, Queen of Heaven, inspire and sustain us on our

pilgrimage of faith," he told pilgrims, "that we too may attain the glory of the

Resurrection and the fulfillment of our hope in her Son's promises.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! (Joshua 24:15)

Can I change the liturgical law, or add elements to the liturgy to make MY celebration more meaningful for me and my family?...

The liturgical books, approved by the competent authority, are to be faithfully observed in the celebration

of the mass and the sacraments; therefore no one on personal authority may add, remove/ignore,

or change anything in them. [Code of Canon Law #846.1]

Saint Isaac Jogues Parish will make the conscious effort to remain faithful and obedient to the teachings of the Church. Especially those teachings and laws which touch upon the sacred liturgy. Liturgical Law will be faithfully observed in our church, as a means to humility and holiness. Adherence to the law of the Church is part of living a good Catholic life... not the exception. It is a means to holiness and proper devotion and piety. It would seem a cruel and misguided error on the part of the faithful to interpret fidelity and obedience to liturgical law and to the directives of the Church’s legitimate authority as wrong, cruel, or pastorally insensitive. Those wishing to marry in our church, bring their beloved dead to our church for the Rites of Christian Burial, and/or celebrate any of the Sacraments/Rites of the Church with us, are invited and encouraged to join us in fidelity. With open mind, heart, and hands, we are invited and challenged to receive from Christ whatever grace He wishes to bestow upon us through the Sacred Liturgy... through His Church.

New Deacons for Saint Isaac Jogues Parish! Parishioners, Paul Kelly and Randy Waring will be ordained Permanent Deacons by Bishop Conlon on Saturday, August 25th at the Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. A special mass of thanksgiving and welcome will be held at Saint Isaac Jogues at Noon on Sunday, August 26th. A reception will follow in the Parish Center. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please join us!

If you had your picture taken for the Parish Directory, please stop by the

church office to pick up a copy.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Our Church needs your help to personally encourage and invite relatives, neighbors, and friends to consider becoming a part of the Catholic church. Do You Know Someone Who:

-is not Catholic and is either engaged to marry or is married to someone who is Catholic? -has children being raised Catholic, and one parent is not Catholic? -was baptized in the Catholic faith (or another Christian religion) but was not brought up or educated in the religion and wants to return to their Catholic roots?

Maybe they are just…waiting to be asked.

August is Catholic Charities Month

There is Still Time to Donate!

At Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, we're having a difficult time this summer and we need your help more than ever to prevent having to eliminate programs. For many, summer brings the greatest time of need. Children don't have access to free (or reduced price) school meals. Many of our elderly clients live in homes without air conditioning or even a fan to stay cool and safe in hot weather. August is Catholic Charities Month and we pray that you will make a gift which will create a positive impact on someone living in poverty.

Can you help? We'll remember your kindness each month with a prayer in honor of you and other donors who help us do God's work in our community. Our clients will also think of you with gratitude as they transform their lives with the help of Catholic Charities' programs and services. On behalf of those who are hungry and homeless; individuals who feel alone and isolated; and families that know the daily struggle of poverty... thank you.
