DISCIPLESHIP continued Radicals For Christ-Adult Class meets in the 1st section of the fel-
lowship hall. Join us as we explore the Bible in relation to current
issues both in our personal lives and in the world. We encourage
open, interactive discussion in a non-judgmental environ-
ment. During the month of April we will continue our study from
the book Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream
by David Platt. In this study we are reminded of how Jesus said his
followers would actually live and what their new lifestyle would
actually look like. It’s about becoming authentic in our Discipleship
as followers of Jesus Christ. We are challenged to consider with an
open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultur-
al preferences. All are welcome. If you would like to join this
study contact Elder Paula Graves or Deacon Gloria Tatum-Wade to
request a copy of the book.

Report from “Putting Feet to Faith” Retreat
On Saturday March 5, forty-three Saint James members gathered at
the Piney Lake facility to discuss the book, Missional Renaissance:
Changing the Scorecard for the Church, by Reggie McNeal, and to med-
itate on what it means to be a missional church and “sent” people as
mandated by scripture. The retreat was facilitated by Mona Edwards,
a member of our congregation and founder of Lift Coaching and Con-
sulting. She was assisted by our Elders who led the participants in
small group discussions. Some of the definitions shared on becoming
more missional included moving the church to an external, kingdom
building focus, and viewing it as a way of life. It was noted by our
Pastor that the missional focus is aligned with St. James’ Strategic Plan developed in 2008.
Following interaction from the small groups, attendees were asked to identify key activities
that the congregation could initiate in the next few months to become more missional as
defined by McNeal in his book. As a result of this exercise, the following items were identi-
fied: 1) Assess current activities for impact, 2) Revitalize the Community Garden by partner-
ing with local universities and other agencies, 3) Encourage greater community outreach
efforts from ministries, and 4) Revitalize the Adopt-A-School project. A follow-up commit-
tee led by the Ministry Team, Elders Amryl Ward and Sharon Smiley, was created to discuss
“next steps” and to develop an implementation plan. To date, the committee has held one
meeting, and will share its final report with the congregation upon completion. All mem-
bers are strongly encouraged to read the book if they have not done so, and can obtain a
copy by contacting Elder Paula Graves.

“Saint James Members Engage in 1039
Sent Moments!”
Beginning Lent and leading up to Easter, members of Saint James were
asked to engage and keep a weekly record of our “sent” moments. Sent mo-
ments are occasions when we intentionally reach out and share the love of
Christ with people beyond our church family and familiar friends. We offered
these sent moments to God on a leaf each Sunday along with our monetary
offering. The leaf was hung on what began as a bare tree in our sanctuary.
On Easter Sunday, I am happy to report, the tree was full of leaves and lit up
with the light of Christ bearing witness to the fact that Saint James church
members engaged in over 1000 sent moments during Lent and Holy Week.
As the sent people of God, believers are responsible for sharing the
Good News of Christ with others. I encourage every member to continue to
engage in sent moments and to reach out to those beyond our church and
familiar friends. Reaching out to others keeps our faith vibrant and our
church alive and relevant. Moreover, sent moments act as a catalyst to the
spreading of the gospel and allow the world to be touched by the love of
Christ. May Christ’ love for us move us to share love with others.
Because of Calvary,
Pastor

In 2017 Saint James Presbyterian Church will celebrate 150 years of worship and service in this community. STEWARDSHIP Message and A Meal Saint James seeks to be a sent congregation, reaching
beyond our membership into the community at large, making a difference in
the world. Supported by your financial gifts and service, there are several
ministries that are impacting our community for the better. One such minis-
try is Message and A Meal presented in partnership with our friends at Cone
Health. On Easter Sunday, Message and A Meal reached a new high for serv-
ing meals and sharing healthcare information. We served 90 guests who were
either homeless and/or economically disadvantaged. Our bus picked up two
loads of people, while others walked, rode bicycles or arrived by car. Three
families with children were also present. Our 12 volunteers served well. In
addition to enjoying a hot meal, our guests were able to participate in blood
pressure screening administered by our congregational nurse, Barbara Akins,
affectionately called “Nurse B”. Jamillia, a Cone health representative was on
hand to make appointments for those who needed to see a physician and all
who gathered enjoyed listening to the soulful sounds of music through trum-
peter Mondre Moffett. The guests were so incredibly appreciative for the
meal and health information that a few of the men insisted on
helping the volunteers put away the chairs. This important work in the commu-
nity happens because you give your financial gifts and time serving others on be-
half of Christ. Your giving matters and is making a difference in the lives of oth-
ers. Thank you for all that you do.
We encourage your continued financial gifts and time. If you are not al-
ready doing so, please follow the biblical mandate of tithing or giving 10% of
your income to the work and witness of the church. The tithe is the biblical
standard of generosity. By giving 10% of our income to the work of Christ, we
express obedience to God’s Word and our commitment to God’s people. May we
continue to give hilariously to the work and witness of Saint James and may our
community be enriched and transformed through the love and justice of Jesus
Christ.
