Prizes this year include five brand new 2016 vehicles from Koons of Manassas (Honda Civic, Buick Verano, GMC Sierra Truck, Honda CRV Sport Utility and Honda Odyssey Van). The raffle allows the purchaser of a single $5.00 ticket the prospect of winning a vehicle or a share of $20,000 in cash prizes. Our parish ministries will benefit! From Our Pastor In preparing the funeral homily for our Deacon, Tom Bello, who passed away March 29th, I asked his family for some thoughts about how they believed Tom would want to be remembered. Though difficult to encapsulate, they conveyed what I, and so many others already knew: Tom’s entire life was grounded in faith – a faith expressed through an immense intellect, a capacity for unconditional love and the assurance that God’s great mercy extends to us all.
Tom’s daughter, Jackie, spoke eloquently at his funeral about what her father would say or do “if he were here.” She’ll forgive me, I hope, if I continue her theme. If Tom were here he would encourage us to exemplify “the priceless benefits for all when we live our faith.” He was quite literally the embodiment of
the Beatitudes. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” (Mt 25:35ff) Whether it was his work as an ESL teacher, his commitment to serving the poor through social outreach, or ministering to the imprisoned and homebound, Tom saw in each person Christ personified. No one was beyond God’s love; no one was beyond God’s salvation. His wife Judy remembers that in serving others, “Tom fully realized and acknowledged his joyful service to others benefited himself as well. He created meaning and purpose in his own life through his outreach to others.”
A Rhodes Scholar with several advanced degrees, Tom could have had a lucrative career in any field of his choosing. Yet, Judy again reminded me that Tom saw his talents as those to be shared“for their highest and best purpose.” This he did in full measure whether he was working with his beloved Secular Franciscan Order, lepers in Brazil, the poor in Columbia or with prisoners in the Alexandria jail. And most certainly we were witness to his great love here at St. James.
The foundation of Tom’s life was the recognition and revelation of God’s mercy. His family told me that the Prodigal Son was his favorite parable, saying “most of us readily understand the faithful older son’s resentment when his father celebrates the prodigal’s return but we marvel at the father’s unconditional forgiveness of his wayward son, symbolizing God’s unstinting mercy for all us sinners.”
Tom spoke about his one regret: not penning the great American novel. At his funeral Mass I reminded his family (and especially his children Pierce, Yeats and Jackie) that he had in fact written it – not on paper, but in deeds. A book can inspire us, can move us, can cause us to question and grow. Yet a book is also a finite thing; you can put it on the shelf and forget about it. Tom’s example lives on – through his students, his parishioners and most importantly his family. Tom’s life will continue to inspire us and bring us closer to God.
Thank you, Deacon Bello, for writing Christ’s message on our hearts. I also want to thank the Bello family for sharing their husband and father with us. Tom has been, as his beloved Saint Francis prayed, “born to eternal life.” He celebrates now the eternal Easter with our Father. May he rest in peace. ~Fr. Posey

Unborn Baby Facts: At twenty weeks old an unborn baby is 11 inches and weighs about 1 pound. A baby in the womb sleeps like we do; sometimes scientists can see the baby’s eyes moving really quickly under his eyelids (called rapid eye movement or simply REM). REM occurs when we dream, so it looks like the babies in the womb have dreams just like we do! Join Us at Our Gala!
