The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

COMUNIDAD HISPANA PARISH LIFE

Roe v. Wade - The term "September 11th" has become a household phrase, representing a great tragedy when innocent people were cal-lously murdered to further a selfish political agenda.

Yet another date, January 22nd, which is not nearly as well known, marks perhaps the most tragic day in our coun-try's history, anniversary of the U.S Supreme Court's deci-sion of Roe v. Wade, which somehow found in our Consti-tution the phantom "right” to have the innocent child in the womb aborted.

Since that decision in 1973, over 60 million innocent ba-bies have been aborted in the U.S.----a number which far exceeds all the Americans killed in all the wars combined since our nation was founded.

Polls show that the majority of people do not realize the full implications of the Roe decision ----for example, that the child can be aborted for any reason (or indeed no rea-son) throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy. The ignorance relative to Roe is by design. It is intentionally fueled by disinformation in the media.

Fortunately, both science and technology has advanced since 1973 so it is becoming increasingly difficult for the abortion industry to conceal and disguise the truth. For instance, 3D and 4D ultrasounds now provide a window into the womb, which clearly shows the humanity of the child and renders absurd their previous claim that "it" was "only a blob of tissue".

Knowledge is power, and as more people gain knowledge about Roe v. Wade, the less power the multi-billion dollar abortion industry maintains, despite its every effort to mislead us and the young mothers whom they seek as cli-ents.

This past Friday, January 22, 2021, marked the 48th year since the dreadful U. S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling, legalizing abortion in the United States of Amer-ica. The annual National March for Life, will take place in Washington D.C. next Friday, January 29th. Unfortunately, this year direct participation will be severely limited. Only a small number of Pro-Life leaders from around the country will be able to actually march. However, we can all register to watch it live by selecting: “RSVP to watch live” at: https://marchforlife.org/2021-virtual-events/

Please pray that friends and families of women with difficult preg-nancies provide loving, life-affirming support for both mother and child.

Pray for public servants: May God grant them the humility, wisdom, and courage to defend all human life.

Pray for our nation: May God unite us in peace and respect for each other and reverence for all human life.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

Bulletin Deadline: Thursday, the week before publication. Please email items to:

[email protected]

Heather Blackwell I did not grow up Catholic; in fact, I did not grow up with a lot of religion at all. I would go to my great-grandmother’s church frequently in the summer when I would visit as a child, and later with my father to our small-town church as a college stu-dent, but nothing in between and nothing until I began attending Mass in my early 20s. During my early attendance, I never felt at home in any of those places. I never felt what I thought I should feel in church, what everyone else seem to feel but me: God. Be-cause of this, I felt unworthy and anxious any time I stepped foot in a church. When I began dating my husband, he talked about being Catholic. I had known a few Catholics in college, but they weren’t very prevalent in my Eastern Kentucky hometown, and had never been to any Catholic service. We had been dating a few weeks when his parents invited me to church. And not just any service, but Christmas Eve Mass. Yikes. And we were late, so the only pew available was in the very front row. Yikes again. As Mass continued, I followed along as best as I could, but I felt a warmth like I had never felt in any church before. Even though I was still nervous, the voices around me, the evening light coming through the windows, and Father Mark Spalding’s presence helped put me at ease. I finally felt what I hadn’t even realized I was missing. I truly felt as though Jesus was there with me, and even though I couldn’t fully participate in Holy Communion, I felt the power of the Eucharist even then. Now, as a Catholic of St. James, I still feel the power of the Eucharist every time I am able to receive it, and feel its ab-sence when I can’t. The past year has been difficult on every human being, and serving God and the people of St. James is now more important than ever. As a family of public servants, we support St. James the best we can with our treasure, but I think so much of steward-ship goes beyond that. I have been involved with our Con-firmation candidates, helped lead a young woman into the Church, welcomed new members with our Welcome Com-mittee, and have served on the Stewardship Committee the last several years. I see the importance of being a part of our St. James community, and being able to serve has, I be-lieve, brought me closer to God. Now as a mother to a St. James Kindergartener, I value our faith-based education and am so grateful to our school for helping raise my daughter. The plaque on the statue outside the school reads, “The

world promises you comfort, but you were not made for

comfort, you were made for greatness.” I think about these

words by Pope Benedict XVI often, especially when remem-

bering my first visits to Immaculate Conception, and I en-

courage all of you to seek greatness as God’s stewards.

We are excited to announce that we will continue the tra-

dition of Black & White Knight this year although it will

look very different. Due to COVID restrictions, the 8th

Annual event will consist of an online auction during

Catholic Schools Week January 31 through February

6. The event is a collaboration between the Black &

White Knight event committee and the Saint James Cath-

olic School PTO.

The auction will consist of class projects created by our

students with the help of Mrs. Edwards, the art teach-

er. There is also a selection of themed baskets and spe-

cialty items donated by our local community and Saint

James families.

Photos of the class projects and

themed baskets have been upload-

ed to the Saint James Catholic

School website. You can access

them by scanning the QR Code.

Next week we will provide you with information about

how to register in order to access the online auction. So,

watch this space for more information to follow.

We hope you will make every effort to participate in the

auction. All proceeds will directly benefit the students

and faculty at Saint James Catholic School.

THIS WEEKEND’S READINGS The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jonah 3:-5, 10 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20

“Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1:17-18) If we truly recognize that all the things we have in life are gifts from God, would we be able to heed Christ’s call to give it all up and follow Him?

Are you interested in a daily devotional for 2021? St. James Church is in the process of ordering Magnifi-cat - a Catholic daily devotional. The next order will run from May 2021 - April 2022. The deadline to place an order is February 25th. The cost is usually $36 per subscription. The number of parishioners participat-ing has increased, therefore our new price for this year is only $32 for the 2021 subscription. If you would like to be included in the Saint James Magnificat order, con-tact Gail Hereford in the parish office. Please note: Checks are due at the time of your order and should be made payable to Saint James Catholic Church.

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS - Saint James Parish is in great need for volunteers to be door greeters at the weekend Masses to ensure those entering are wearing masks and sanitizing hands. The greeters will also keep count of the number of attendees to ensure we maintain our proper attendance number. Once the attendees are inside the church, the ushers will escort them to a seat. Greeters should arrive at least 30-45 minutes prior to the start of Mass in order to count all attendees as they enter. Help is needed at all weekend Masses. Sanitizer and a hand counter are provided for your use. Please pray about volunteering your time for this important ministry. If you would like to volunteer, please contact: Shirley Morton at 270-737-3562 or [email protected]

And, for those of you who attended the St. James’ women’s retreat in October, this was the book you received in your gift bag. If you are interested in purchasing a book, both used and new copies are available on various websites, including Am-azon, ranging in price from $3.95 (used) - $7.95 (new) plus tax and shipping. A Kindle edition is also availa-ble. An electronic copy of the study guide will be pro-vided to those attending.
